all I want is for it to go away and be on my own

A few years ago my son was waiting to board his flight back home from Amsterdam airport and discovered he no longer had his passport. Much panic. He was with 3 friends and a lot of panic took place. Retraced steps etc. The last place they had been was the McDonald's outlet. Passport found in the waste bin. Being good young men they had cleared their table and emptied the tray into the bin! Not sure why he had left the passport on the tray in the first place.

I once thought I had lost my mother in law, but she found her own way back somehow. At least she she has vowed never to step foot inside the motorhome ever again to make sure I don't lose her a second time ....

Good News

My Daughter found them by accident this morning. In the Cats Basket. ?????!!!! Relief all round. How they got there is a mystery it's on a cat climbing tower nearly 6ft up. She was dismantling the tower for her move to Wiltshire
One question, does the cat have a magnet on its collar to operate a cat flap?

we have used this system in the past for our cats, a small round magnet is attached to cats collar and this operates the cat flap.

our cats were forever walking round with metal items attached to their collars, it may be your keys would be too heavy, but you never know.

You can easily get something like a samsung galaxy smart tag and then just call your keys any time you lose them and theyll ring when youre within 200ft, or if theyre further away they will show you on a map, where they are.

I don't know anything of your past or present personal situation and have just picked up on this thread. It sounds like you need a rescue plan (a personal one). Do you have one? Are you receiving the professional care and support you need?

If you don't have a rescue plan, or don't know what one is, it's basically a list that you write (on a good day) of things you and/or others around you could do to help diffuse a bad situation or stop one escalating. For example, you could have something like this;

For me to do

Am I reacting appropriately to this issue?
Can I get to a safe place where I can be alone / supported by others?
Is there someone I could contact right now? <Enter names and phone numbers>
Would playing my Feel Good Fast playlist help me <A ready made list of songs that instantly make you feel good. Have the list ready on every device you have>

For others to do

Ask if I would prefer help or to be left alone.
Not to trivialise my situation.
Not to say things like, 'there's always someone worse than you', 'tomorrow's another day', 'pull yourself together' etc.
Try to understand that, for me, my situation is real.

These are just examples and your list should be personal to you. The people around you should be aware of your plan, so that they know how you would prefer them to help you, should it be necessary. It isn't intended to replace professional help but is meant to instantly assist you to deal with a situation before it gets critical. It's like a Wish List to help stop your situation getting worse, allowing you and others to get things back on track or to realise that you need emergency help from professionals.

If you don't have the support of others, you can create a rescue plan just for yourself. This will give you pointers on how to regain control of a situation by doing something that will help you. When someone feels out of control, it's very difficult to think rationally and this generally means things spiral down. By having the support of a plan written on a good day, you can make use of that on a bad day.

I do hope I'm not insulting you by giving you this information and only hope that it might be useful for you. Take care.

Obviously you've checked all your coats and felt in lining etc, only unusual place I've found a set was down a drain between vehicle and house, managed fish them out with a magnet on a string 🙈 Worth a look, but if not take a step back, stop racking your brain as your more likely to remember if not thinking about them !
P.s. Have you heard off your Insurance yet, or they still looking into it??? I don't think 🤔

I have a fear of being away, losing the keys and not being able to get into the van. I have had a spare hab door key cut in my wallet and the key number stored in my phone. I also obtained a spare key for a padlock that did not have identification on it just from photos of the original key and the keyway on the padlock from this place, next day delivery and very very reasonable.

Jerry,
Don't worry right now.
Please take some gentle advice.
I lost the remote keyless card for my car. I had key cover. I rang them and was greeted by a lovely lady who talked me through the whole process.
I began to worry that I would have to notify my insurance people, but you do not.
Key cover is not a vehicle insurance, it is a totally separate insurance. Before you contact them be very sure of the keys that were lost as you cannot alter the claim once it has been reported/accepted. If you tell them your worries regarding the motorhome security they will advise you the best way to go about your claim.
If you have Keycover it may well have an annual maximum claim limit of £1500. This can be used for all your keys that you have lost up to that amount.
The AA was sent to sort my car. The AA man programmed it on my drive. Please do not stress, as I am fully aware of what that is like.
I am Trevor, and live in Lowestoft. Where are you. If I can help I will.
Kind regards. Take care.

Jerryz.
A very close friend has been reacting to things for the last few months as you describe. Eventually he saw a psychologist (not psychiatrist who only hands out medication) and is gradually beginning to calm down and find out what was going on.
He had to go private because there was a year's long wait for the NHS.
This book (Rewire your Anxious Brain by Elizabeth Karle) helped a lot to explain the rages and what to do about them www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392163837361?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&toolid=10044&customid=CjwKCAjwkNOpBhBEEiwAb3MvvT3QdUJH89MuPvq8UkW6iJZM7AGD17yZGHu1kgnc6iAKq05OTRTHmRoCLCgQAvD_BwE
Hope this might help.

Not key related but proof as to how easy things are lost. I had been using my passport extensively over the last 12 months due to my dad passing and me required to provide ID for any dealing I had with his estate. After a trip to a bank I got back in to my car and put my passport in my glovebox. About 2 weeks later I needed my passport for another ID check and could not find it anywhere. I knew I has put it in my glove box but nowhere to be seen. My wife and I tore the house apart looking for it and in the end put it down as lost. Reported it as such and bought a new passport. 2 days after my new passport arrived, I jumped in my car and noticed the red corner of what looked like my passport hanging below the hinges of my glovebox. Sure enough it was it. My passport had slipped out of the back of the glovebox when closing it or during a journey and dropped inside my dashboard. What are the chances. £80 wasted on a new passport as the original was only 3 years old.
I feel your pain, about three months since we returned from Ireland after four weeks, naturally we had a lot of mail to go through and bin the junk mail, so about a month before getting the ferry to Rotterdam I couldn't find Passports ehic cards and spare euros which are all bundled together, never did find them, cost £160.00 for two passports, ehic cards were free and lost 50 euros, we think that I must have put the junk mail on top of them and then binned them but like you we searched everywhere often three or four times.

Good advice ... they will turn up in one of the most unlikely places

I lost my expensive sunglasses, looked bloody everywhere.. gave up.. a week or so later, found them in the boot my daughters car under a car mat.... cant ever recall being in there ...it's an age thing .. just relax and talk a walk..
I was on the phone to our insurance company making a claim for my wife's lost jewellery. In the middle of the call, my wife presented me with her (now found) jewellery, which she had put in the shoe polish box for safe keeping! 😄
I thanked the nice lady at the insurance for her understanding.

I think at times like this it is always good to have a grip on the real importance of what has/is happening, rather than your immediate feelings, which are reactionary.

I love the glass jar (life) analogy, filling it with rocks, shingle and sand. If the sand (small stuff) goes in first, there isn't enough room for the big, important stuff (rocks). The big stuff must go in first, then the stuff that kind of matters (shingle) and the sand fills in the gaps. Some good videos on YouTube giving a visual representation of the analogy, as it really is reflective of life, and the order in which it must be filled.

I am terribly bad at losing / misplacing keys that why I fit tile locator units on all of my key rings so I can find them with the app on either my iPad or iPhone - you can buy the Tile units on Amazon and if you sign up to the Tile support scheme they send you free new batteries every 12 months.

Really good and saves a lot of time and stress

I hope you’ve found them by now. It is most definitely an age thing. My husband looses keys for a hobby only surpassed by his glasses! I lost my sunglasses in August on the way home from France. Convinced myself they were in a bar somewhere and forgot about them. Guess what hubby found them in the porch in a hold-all bag last week!!! As for the family, I’ve given up expecting to get on with them, saves being disappointed 😂😂

I know the key (sorry) to not losing things is being concious of the moment when you put things down. However usally this happens because attention is distracted by a higher priority task causing distraction. Tough but true. For long term storage keep a note on your phone. The worst thing is when things 'turn up' (including replaced passport) and I can dimly recall leaving them there.
Tags are great, but now I have to remember to change all the batteries every 6 months or so.
Finally it seems ridiculous that you can spend a fortune on a one key MH and thus add an extra anxiety to your life....

My thoughts too! My van was stolen off my drive just over a year ago. I still peak out the window first thing in the morning (well, my first thing) apprehensively to see if it is still there! Last night I lay awake for hours thinking 'how did they do it!?' it's all stress I don't need.

Have you asked someone else you trust (perhaps outside the family) to undertake a search? In every similar case I've come across another set of eyes has almost invariably solved it.

On more than one occasion whilst a coach driver I had passengers panicking because thy had "lost" their passport. It was usually in their luggage, which I asked if I could search (in front of them obviously), despite them being positive they'd checked.

(For your amusement, there was an occasion when we were an hour into and half-way to a cross-channel ferry, the teacher-in-charge of a coachload of 10 year olds suddenly told me that she'd left ALL the groups passports - they were travelling on individual rather than the usual Group passport - in her office at the school. Now THAT'S a time to panic!)

At home keep them in the same place always. If driving keep them on the ignition, anything else have them around your neck. I locked mine in the garage, so that's what I learnt. Keep calm and enjoy a G&T.
