Blimey judging by all the Symphony replies just how many of you over 70’s are driving round without taking a medical? It never ceases to amaze me how Retirees after having driven a Car all their lives decide they can handle a Motorhome, you only have to watch them trying to reverse with the Wives stood behind the Van arms flapping its hilarious they really are a danger. I’m sure if one of your loved ones was knocked over by a half blind Pensioner you’d not find it funny, rules are rules and this particular one is there to protect us.

Totally agree, if someone is fit then that's fine and whilst its harsh for an individual who's eyesight or health deteriorates then it has to be sacrifice the one for the many which has to be a pragmatic good rule.

In France it is necessary to have a check-up by a listed doctor

Just look up on official site as I sat amazed... never heard of this law, and just realised you might have an over 3,5t vehicle. I know for sure that nor Dad or Mum who is now 80 never had to have a check-up. And law says test only for heavy vehicles and also bus drivers, ambulances or taxis. For all the others the licence lasts their whole life. Pfewwww you scared me

Sorry yodeli , I should have made it clear that it seems that the French system follows the British when exchanging a licence. So, all the "heavy" groups have an expiry date and it is necessary to go for the medical, as I described in order to retain those groups. I have retained all the "lighter" groups - under 3.5t - without another medical.

Again, sorry for the confusion

UPDATE.

I shouldn't really tempt fate, but it is possible that I might just have edged forward at little with my broken life today...

I worked out that, for the last 52 years, I have always had the freedom of being able to drive myself where I needed/wanted to be independent of anyone.

For the last 9 days I have been trapped... unable to go anywhere without other people's help.

I got/am quit "down" about the situation.

I have spent hours searching the three main Portuguese websites that have adverts for cars/vans and found several vans for sale in my price range but the were mostly down in the Lisbon area.

All my people are extremely busy doing their vital work prior to the Festive season... the English Man has to wait his turn!

Anyhow, today I located a tiny van (Renault Kangoo) that is within my price range and, more significantly, is not far away.

Contact has be made and it might just do the temporary job I need it to.

So, fingers crossed, We might be able to get to see it tomorrow.

If bought, it might mean my Festive Algarve trip may have to rely on (heaven forgive me) on over-nighting in... hotels! :Eeek:

We'll see...

JJ

You will never fit in one JJ , blimey you only just fit in our fiat ducato. Bob.

but... but... but... I just borrowed my mate's Kangoo to go shopping... high enough for me to get in and out of and went much faster than I ever need to.

You need to buy a multi purpose vehicle JJ , something that's able to convert into living space, not just shopping and using as a car, and think how much money you save being a flt ? hotels are for one or two nights not all winter on the algarve. ?

Maybe something like this. ?

You need to buy a multi purpose vehicle @JJ ,

Thank you for your suggestion(s) but...

The current plan (which can change at any moment depending on the "Signs" which rule my life) is to buy a small, runabout (which is easy for me to get in and out of), without worrying about over-nighting in it. It will be used to go shopping and move logs and tree cuttings and bin bags of rubbish around QMJ.

Then, in due course, after the sale of my apartment, I will invest in a fancy, posh (to me) under 3500 kilo, Portuguese registered motorhome to resume my occasional Free Loading in...

Can't wait!

Do you have a plan to get your washing done once you've sold the apartment?

I AM contemplating employing a washer lady from the local community to do my washing (and a bit of Hymer cleaning too) once I have my pockets full of cash again... just like the good old days!!!

Brief Update.

Got up this morning with three possible vehicles to buy...

Waited for signs but thought the sensible thing to do would be to get to see all three before deciding.

When one of the guys was sent to pick up some items from a place near to the location of one of the vans, the sign was plain to see. I joined him and off we went.

Eventually got to see the first Renault Kangoo in an Intermarche car park.

Took a glance and the decision was made...

Look...

The "Sign" is there for all to see if you know what to look for.

Did all the paper work and, thanks to the wonders of the internet, the vehicle was purchased and I just drove it back to the Studio where it is spending the night next to the Hymer.

I loved driving it... smooth as silk and FAST!

Not quite correct.
Trucks over 7.5t the speed limit is 60 mph in the UK, however they have a 90kmh (56mph) limiter fitted. The speed limit for coaches is 70 mph if under 12m, 60 over 12m.
Under 12m they used to have a 70 mph limiter fitted under the latest EU rules they now have a 100kmh limiter (62mph).
All rather confusing as UK speed limits are higher than the limiters fitted under EU law.
And I've had them pass me at nearly 80 on many occasions so I'm not sure the limiters are fitted.

Kangoos are great Van's I've had 8 of them

Biggest issue is the single point injector is a common fail but otherwise good Van's

In the uk my only gripe was the road tax as the 1.5dci engine same as the clio car ,same emissions etc but £30 per year for clio and £ 190 per year for kangoo

I met a dutch girl last year that lived and travelled full time in a kangoo

Watching her outside showers were a daily treat

Not sure jj would be so much

Ah, I think I can see why you bought it JJ .... :clap2:

Strewth, there are so many 'safety' issues with the second vehicle ... no way would I want to actually sleep in it! The LPG shower is interesting though, never seen one like that before.

Great little vans. I’m a lanky git,the kangoo is the only vehicle I’ve ever had that I could drive for hours on end without getting back ache. Enjoy!:D2

If it was baby blue I could see the attraction, but must admit looks a tidy van, but can see it being abused. ? Bob.
