Learn to crochet?

I lost count of how many times I started then restarted but found it easier to keep the tensioning slightly looser till I got the hang af it:)
I think the key part of this quote is ‘till I got the hang of it’ - it’s brilliant that you have Anne - and it seems everyone else has as well - the photos of poppies, throws, waistcoats and blankets are amazing - and @Puddleduck ’s wedding quilt is truly stunning. What a lovely thread - started by @snailtrailer - but in true MHF style - taken up and run with by Funsters far and wide.

Only sorry my arthritic wrist prevents me from joining you :(

Thank you for the help (y)

I've spoken to the lady I work with and she's definitely interested in helping out. She's asked if I can get hold of a poppy pattern for her as she has one somewhere but she's got no idea where she put it. I'm not sure she owns a computer, nevermind uses the Internet so I'll get one printed off for her when I've managed to fix my printer lol. She's off to Germany for a couple of weeks so it'll be April before I see her again.

Thanks Lou... that's great.

I'm getting a little worried that my 50,000 might have been a little optimistic...

Good morning, girls (and any lurking guys!) :-)

As you all seem to have mastered crocheting poppies, how's about looking at the Magic Ring (or Magic Circle)?

It's a great way to start off anything circular and leaves virtually no hole in the middle.

There are a number of YouTube videos - pick one that explains it best to you. I'll help you out at Chester, if you need it :-)

Magic ring?? Magic ring?? In my house this afternoon it has been more like ‘Magic-fling-it-across- the-room-and-shout-a lot!’

I have done about thirty granny squares now though, so I am fairly good at those. The problem being that as I get better at tensioning, the squares get smaller. . .whoops! I may even be brave enough to change colour. . .at some point. . .
And to have another go at the circle!

Hello all, hope everyone has had a good weekend.

I’ve been a bit busy and was slacking on the poppy front but I’ve made another 3 today including 2 black ones. They look a bit better in the flesh :) I hope the purple one isn’t too small it’s approx 2 inches across.

@Puddleduck that quilt is amazing. I have only started paper piecing and patchwork about 6 months ago and really enjoy it. I'm in the middle of 2 quilts, block of the month, at the moment. They're not good enough for professional long arm quilting so I will be hand quilting them!

@Janine really looking forward to you being able to show us at Chester, will get my mo-jo going. I really fancy the festival shawl you made.

I think it's amazing how this thread has got momento and taking in other crafts well thought of @snailtrailer think this thread is going to run and run. @movan has been an inspiration with her poppies by November I think quite a lot will have been achieved.

@Mrsambulancekidd are your nails gel or normal varnish, they look good.

@Ven For the poppies I am making two inches is the minimum so yours would be fine :)

I started by hand piecing a quilting (over the winter I was working on a replica quilt for Beamish Museum - my part of the second version of the replica of Joe The Quilter's Quilt) but as I have grown older my quilts have evolved and I mostly work by machine these days - both piecing and free motion quilting. I learned to quilt from my Great-Grandmother and she didn't have a sewing machine. I was on holiday at my Grandma's house and must have been getting under her feet at I was taken to GreatGrandma's, given a paper of needles and a spool of thread and told to thread the needles onto the thread.... I would have been about 4 ...... Then I was allowed to do a stitch or two and after that I was addicted. I wonder what GreatGrandma and Grandma would think of the quilts I make now? Grandma was a wonderful machinist, she had done an apprenticeship as a tailor (her Uncle was a bespoke tailor) and specialised in Ladies Riding Jackets. I'm not sure it would ever have occurred to her that it was possible to drop the feed dogs on a machine and free motion though!

Happy memories!

@Debs .. I don't think David G has messages .. could you ask him to point Bev to our thread please when you speak to him ... I think she may have some to drduct too .. not sure. :)

How very rude :reel: try fishing elsewhere .

Oh dear - it wasn’t meant to be rude Carol - apologies if it has come over that way - I’m sure it’s a great hobby and I do appreciate the finished products - and yes I do prefer my fishing elsewhere - lol. Mind you - I wouldn’t have the patience for crochet I don’t think - and certainly not for real fishing lol :)

I'm just thinking we should arrange a meet somewhere within easy striking distance of Leicester (for The Fabric Guild so we can arrange a group visit) - just an informal meet, ideally somewhere with a club room or similar, not a rally as such.

@Puddleduck I have been very naughty:oops:
I have ordered a set of KnitPro circular needles to give me lots of sizes and different lengths of cable.
Do I need them?...........NO
Do I want them?...........YES but how do I explain them away? Can't exactly say to Derek - these old things I've had them for ages.
Note to self: Must be around when the postman calls :whistle::whistle:

Pamela you deserve them after all your troubles!!!:) That’s what I say!!

I found some really hairy red yarn in a charity shop this morning so couldn't resist making a poppy. Whatever I make between now & Chester will be donated to the cause :)

This was where I got the pattern from https://www.rebeckahstreasures.com/blog/crochet-remembrance-poppies-free-pattern (just the outer bit) but it's not very well written so I've put some explanations in red:

Outer Poppy Instructions:
with black...
rnd 1: magic circle 6 (6 st) or 4 ch and make into a ring. 6dc into ring
rnd 2: scinc, sl st, f/o (12 st) = 2 dc into each dc, join into ring and fasten off

with red...
rnd 3: scinc (24 st) = 2 dc into each dc, join into ring, 1ch
rnd 4: (sc, dcinc x 4, sc) x 4 (40 st) = (dc, 2tr into each of next 4 dc, dc) x4, join into ring, 1ch
rnd 5: (sc, dcinc x 8, sc) x 4, sl st join, f/o (72 st) = (dc, 2tr into each of next 8dc, dc) x4, join into ring and fasten off.

As promised here are some of the bags I have made, I photographed them while I was having a coffee in a local shop/café that sells locally crafted things.
The last one is a pom pom bag, the back and the strap are made from a recycled scarf......I bought loads from our local charity shop, they have been a great way of having an assortment of different fabrics.(y)

Circular needles take up so little space and are much less weight :)
