Learn to crochet?

49,743 .... wow .. brill @Ven.

@Optimistic Daffodil .. Lu, I am sure there must be a way of copying this thread but I am not very technologically minded ...

Thank you so much ... we NEED more support. :)

@Gromett can you help Lu out please?

I really need to head to bed as I'm up for work at 5am. I'll try and check here before I go. From what I've found, it's for the 100th anniversary and all kinds of poppies are okay? I know she knits but I'm not sure about crocheting, if that makes a difference.

Gotta scoot, thank you for any help you can give me :D I feel like I'm missing a really obvious post somewhere lol

Lu .. any kind of poppies knit or crochet ... ready for armistice day. Also purple poppies for theanimals killed .. eg war horse.

Thanks again. Xxx

Hello @Ven Looks good on a hanger bet it will look even better on you. Love the colours and congratulations on finishing it.

@Optimistic Daffodil. Welcome and a welcome to your friend too. There are lots of people (especially ladies) in this situation who love to knit but don't know what's needed. I belong to Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers who have a website www.norfolkknittersandstitchers. They originally sent garments of all sorts to Eastern Europe but now knit for many different organisations - prem baby clothes, hedgehogs, donkeys, things to sell, blankets - well all manner of things. They got lottery funding for the work they were doing for housebound and lonely people who are reviving their knitting skills for a worthwhile cause. If you contact them they will put your friend on a mailing list for their newsletter. They do have knitted and crochet poppy patterns which can be printed off.

The newsletter and website tells you all about the various groups around the county (Norfolk and Suffolk) and there is a group at Kings Lynn. It may well spread into Nottingham in the not too distant future.

@Puddleduck and all are poppies made of other than wool accepted?

Fabulous teddy, no wonder he has been subject to death by love :)

I have made poppies in yarn, fabric and plastic!!!! Mine are for a mass display so I am not worried about the base material or even too concerned about the exact colours except shade of red, white, purple and black/grey.

Knit, crochet, sew and I have even printed some out on a 3D printer so they are in bio-plastic and look like huge buttons.

Red is the traditional poppy

White is the peace poppy that commemorates all affected by conflict

Purple for animals killed during conflict

Black for people of colour affected by conflict

We have a sculpture of a horse in our war memorial garden (made by a lady in the village and remade by Martin so it actually stands up lol) - it is made from chicken wire and has a barbed wire mane and tail. It looks grey/silver and can be seen through so very much a ghost horse (several of the farm horses from here were used in WWI). Last Remembrance Day we made a saddle of crafted poppies for the horse and it looked wonderful which was why we want to do even better this year. :)

My current Pom Pom work is this chair for our yarn bombing event in May , we are decorating a dozen chairs and plan to have some sort of woolly trail for kids to do around the village to find the chairs.
At the moment this is all just a theory !

Those of you going to Chester, I will have some bla k buttons with me for those of you making poppies. :)

@Lisa and @DavidG58 Bev ... do you want some?

Lisa .. I bought some lovely purple wool yesterday for the horse poppies as I call them and Pauline has put some nice purply buttons in with others. :)
Joy, is that offer of black buttons still open? I’ve completed my first poppy. Now got a purple one :)

I tried a different pattern, which was meant to be for beginners but took me 2 hours as oppose to 1hr for previous! I think I’ll stick to the 1st design.

How long do the crochet ones take? I should start at the beginning of this thread and learn to crochet

They both look great Lisa. I’ve only learnt to crochet since the thread started and it takes me about 10 mins to make a poppy which I don’t think is too bad :)

Oh really?! I have to learn to crochet....10mins as opposed to 1hr....it’s a no brainer :D
Which pattern are you following?

@Lisa Go on Lisa .......... I dare you to plough through the Learn to Crochet thread. Should only take you a couple of days and you'll make lots of friends along the way:LOL:

Poppy mania has set in. I have my yarn ready but I'm not joining in yet as you'll find out if you read through the thread.

No doubt I’ll be awake at 4 am....it seems to be a regular occurrence lately, so I’ll start to read through then. I’m more of a visual learner, so I think YouTube will be my friend again. It worked for knitting. I’ve always been put off by crochet as I thought it looked too complicated but I’d rather complete a poppy in 10 mins ;)

Thanks.

The pattern I’m mostly following is this one

I learnt the basics by following this video and pausing as necessary

Hi Joy, no we’re not doing Chester this year but you could always give them to @DavidG58, I’m sure Terry will be seeing him soon? Save posting them but would obviously pay postage if you did.

I’ve had a little go at crochet, first thing this morning. Problems with tensioning  but I will persist. Just popped out and bought some decent hooks to keep my hands in place as I seem to end up at the hook!

@Ambilkate is going to show me how to crochet too, when we get together. I’m hoping that she’ll come on board with the poppy mania :D2 ;)

Hello Kate @Ambilkate I saw you were looking in. Are you working on anything particular at the moment?

Hi, no I havnt crocheted for many years my granny thought me when I was a child. I'm reading through the thread when time permits me to. I read to page 14 last night whilst I couldn't sleep. Had quite a chuckle to myself found thread very informative & entertaining . I still have quite a few pages to read yet. I'm glad you are home and hopefully you are feeling better for being in your own environment always found that to be the best medicine ever.
I will look at picking up a crochet hook up again very soon, I know I have some red wool somewhere I will have to get Bill to find where we packed it away. We have been here for over 10yrs so probably won't know where to start looking we have so much stuff that's never been unpacked since we moved in.
Loving the thread. Loving the pic loving the enthusiasm keep it up girls.
Ps... Whilst reading thread from the start I was thinking no Funster men had commented on thread then, I can't remember how many pages in Jim and Chris piped up thought that was funny. Still got quite a bit of thread to read has any funster men joined in crocheting yet?
Kate x
