That looks so simple .... and I have just done my head in trying to work out how to start the new circle partway along the crocheted lines ...

I must confess I did the first leaf wrong the first time and started again apart from that it was okay just doing the combination of stitches right in to the rings. Managed to get my red wool for the poppies in a charity shop but the market wool stall hadn’t got what I wanted......and I must say she was the most unhelpful person ever she could hardly be bothered speakingto me I showed her a photo on my phone of the cushion cover that I wanted to match why are people like that

We need pictures of the wedding quilt pretty please. I have a double wedding ring planned when I’ve finished the HP & Kaffe Fasset quilts. Unless something else pops into my head before then lol!

What machine are you using for quilting? So far I’ve quilted everything on my Husqvarna but recently invested in a straight stitch Janome. I’m hoping the Janome will free motion as nicely but I know it will sit on my as yet unused quilting frame so must finish a quilt to try it out.

I will do photos when it is more finished than it is at the moment. It won't win any prizes as the piecing isn't very good but once I have done the quilting I'll applique hearts over where the piecing is way out which will make it more acceptable (at least to me - I don't think many other people will notice or care).

When she was very ill but before my Grandma died she asked my sister and I to think of something we wanted but didn't need and (within reason) she would buy it for us so that she could see our pleasure. My sister asked for the deposit for a sports car and I asked for a Bernina 440QE sewing machine. I love my Bernina and sew most days, it makes me smile just to think of Grandma.

The machine has a counter that tells the servicing engineer how many stitches it has done (since last serviced and overall) and mine has done nearly two million stitches in 9 years). I change the needle regularly and clean and oil every two or three bobbins which is far more than the minimum but I think that makes a huge difference. The new foot is a Bernina Ruler Foot, I have the Westalee Ruler Foot but it is a fiddle to set up differently for each quilt as you need to undo a screw (with screwdriver) reset the height of the foot and hold it all in place as you do the screw up again, the Bernina foot has a thumb screw for that so can be adjusted one handed.

n't have any black wool so have left it as hole to sew button over .... but I don't have any black buttons yet.

Especially when you won't go back. A kind work and a bit of help even if you are only spending £1 or £2 this time means you will go back next time and probably spend more....... I hate people like that.

At quilt shows I always try to find a trader called Eileen Blood (she also does workshops, often free or very little money) as she was very helpful finding a thread colour that had been withdrawn (she found some in a box of sale thread for me). I have spent at least £200 (and probably much more) with her since and she always has a smile for every customer (as does her husband). That initial root around in her sale box was worth it for both of us.

That's brilliant Joy! I can sew buttons on if you can't find any, please don't buy specially as I have a bag full of black buttons I bought at a recycle place.

Thanks Helen ... a few people have promised to sort me out with some as I think I will try and keep doing this all year round now ready for you ladies that need them again next year for the worthy causes. If they fall through I will give you a shout .. and hope our @buttons realise I mean little plastic things.

@buttons does your wife crochet? We need LOTS of poppies before November please.

Well it did occur to us, our neighbour had to drive his car onto the street in his dressing gown and slippers, that made us chuckle

The next instalment. . .

Well, I (eventually) managed to crochet a granny square, and posted a picture of it. . .but I couldn’t manage to make a second one. I spent a few days trying and my hands were aching, balls of yarn were being thrown, grumbles were heard. . .

Some members of the FCC had mentioned, in their posts, working with cotton. I enjoy knitting with cotton so decided to give it a go. I then purchased the magazine, pictured in a previous post, with two balls of cotton yarn included. I used that yarn and the number 4 hook, also included with the magazine. Again, I followed the Bella Coco video for absolute beginners.

I have found working with cotton, and a smaller hook, much easier. I find the tension easier to control. My hands no longer ache and feel more relaxed. I made the squares in the picture yesterday. I will now puchase some suitable matching thread, make some more and crochet them together to make my first crochet project.

Also obtaining thread to make poppies, I hope cotton will be okay for those too.
My huge tin of buttons was recently donated to a school, do you think it will be okay if I go and ask for them back??!!

I am loving reading this thread and seeing everyone's work and progress.
