Learn to crochet?

That is lovely .

The blanket is beautiful as well scousebird, great to have vibrant colours.

I am going on a learn to crochet course on Saturday, my two friends wanted to go so I am tagging along but will admit here that its probably my third time to try to learn :blusher:
Good luck

Hello everyone
I thought you might be interested to see what I have been buying from Ukraine. Search Olga Chemerys - Mufficorn. The designs are absolutely delightful. I went through Etsy. You might be tempted to buy and support the Ukraine sellers in some small way.

The other site is SAstitch for cross stitch designs. I went direct this morning just looking to make certain I had the name right and they even have the loveliest free designs to download although, of course, that is not the objective.

Ven I love the idea of the Ravelry pattern for hearts. That would be good spread around like random acts of kindness.

Vladimir Putin Heart GIF
Also KnittingLabShop - knitted Christmas baubles - more dolls.

Has anyone else found other sites that are still up and running.

I use Etsy mainly and have bought some cross stitch and crochet patterns from Ukrainian sellers.

Jenben Enjoy your crochet course! I taught myself from a couple of YouTube videos when in Portugal with a couple of cheap hooks and very dodgy yarn from the Chinese bazaar. I think my technique is a bit unconventional but it works for me 😊

I have been doing other stuff, in my fabric stash I have some Seasalt fabric, they used to sell 1 metre lengths of fabric on their website (I don’t think they do that anymore) and I picked this up a while ago. This week one of my friends came around to make a blouse with me and so I ended up making this and am now half way through another one.

Jenben for those who are not offended (or too young) I tell people that crochet is like sex. Once you understand the basis of what to do it's a question of where you insert it (the hook) and how many times (you wrap the yarn over and pull through).

There is no right and wrong way to do anything. The way that works for you is the right way.

I don't hold the yarn in my left hand in the way most people do as if I do that my work is far too tight. People suck in air through their teeth when they see a loose hold of the yarn but my way works for me and gives good results (in my opinion anyway). I also tend to use a hook a size larger that the pattern says.

I like the hearts and flowers for Ukraine and will make some and sew a safety pin on the back. There is so little we can do at the moment and it is so frustrating.

EDIT: Maybe I could make a few and hand them out to people who would like to wear one to show support? I know it's not much but I'm all at sea wondering if I can actually do anything to help.

Once the refugee situation becomes clearer and we know if refugees will be settled in the UK I would hope to crochet blankets to give - a bit like a linus blanket so that people know that other people are aware and do care. I'd send to Moldova or Poland but the cost of sending would probably be more than the cost of buying locally :(

I floated the idea to Derek this morning that we could take a family. Double bedroom, a room for girls and another room for the boys. Their own shower room but would have to share the kitchen. In return they could help with the garden and housework. I have toys and books (in English) and the garden is huge. I have spare knitting machines and sewing machines and enough yarn and materials for them to make clothes for the children. I even have waterproof covers for the single beds if the children are unsettled for a while.

He's thinking about it.

I realised tho' that I wouldn't make the same offer to an English family. Sad isn't it.

went to craft club today, found it a few weeks ago when looking for WW. Know which is more fun. Lovely church run group, all sorts of crafts, they are trying to find out what will be best to help. Vicar and wife do a lot for refugees. Hoping they have more information next week
It's a lovely group and have finally learned one of our neighbours names, thought she looked familiar last time.

Jenben you can do it, I believe in you!
Oh that's something i was going to ask you, lady next to me had bad chilblanes, any suggestions to help her?

Same as us except we only have one room available (with en-suite bathroom)

We do have someone else living with us from time to time - he came as a stranger in need and is now a friend.

Jenben.(Aunty) Carolyn, Eden is begging me to teach her how to crochet and yet, no matter how hard I try, I cannot teach this 6 yr old how to do it.

It is ME.. hopeless teacher, not dense pupil... So don't blame yourself. (Eden sends a hug by the way)... :)

If anyone can point me in direction of HOW to teach crochet then I would be grateful..... But not the sex version. ;) Ven. .. :)

How about YouTube videos that you can both watch and crochet along? That’s how I learnt. I found these:

I did a bit, pulled it apart over and over. It wasn’t instant but just sudddenly clicked. I am not the best teacher either 😊

I agree, the Bella Coco videos are the best. She explains things really well and in U.K. terms .

snailtrailer that’s a very generous offer you are a total 🌟. I doubt we will be asked all the way over here in Pembs, but we have a static caravan in the garden which is never used and could quickly be made habitable. I will have the conversation with Him Indoors. We aren’t on a bus route though so may not be suitable.

I took the latest 2 blankets into our local care home this morning. I had a lovely phone call to say "thanks" and they can use as many as I can make. They also have a bag of yarn for me. Happy days!!!!

So John's knitted sweater is finished and given - I didn't manage to take a photo as he had it on and was away before I could ask! I am pleased with it though, top down and with an i-cord cast off at the end of the sleeves and the bottom hem which I haven't done before but will do again.

Martin picked up the bag of yarn from the dementia unit - a real mixed bag but I will be able to use most of it I hope. I was also given 8 balls of Sirdar Snuggly Aran (5 in cream and 3 in sage green) and have done one square of Winter Opulence by Kirsten Holloway - the photo is from her website, my version is in the process of being blocked to shape. It took almost a whole 100gm ball to make one 17 inch square!!!! So I am thinking 4 squares joined will be about 35 inches (allowing an inch for the joining) and then I can add a border to bring it up to about 40 inches. I think that will use 5 balls of the cream. I have other cream (not the same shade of course!) aran weight I can use with the sage and will do bi-colour squares of the same pattern to make a second blanket which I think will look attractive.

I still have the blanket I promised a friend but he is in the process of moving from Chicago back to Iowa so he won't be in any hurry to get more stuff to have to shift!

That is so beautiful Helen. Puddleduck This has kept you out of mischief for a while

Jenben Carolyn, something for you to aspire too - next year, perhaps. How's the crochet training going?

I've been printing off some of the muffi_corn designs and run out of ink. More printer ink ordered. The two designers are in Mariupol - I was so hoping they would get away but alas the ceasefire was a myth.

snailtrailer kept me busy for a couple of evenings. They don't take long to do and not that complex if you can count and read US terminology.

I'll look at the muffi designs. Thank you.

We are going out tonight to a neighbours' garden event but I have to admit my heart isn't in it. I wish I'd made hearts to give out but not enough yellow yarn left. Perhaps I can make some over the next week or so. My friend had a shop and maybe she would put a tray and donations box on the counter. I'd have to get an official collection box I think or a receipt from my last donation to prove the money was being paid over.

Jenben once you can do that the rest is just a question of reading patterns and figuring where to put the hook in, how many times to wrap the yarn and how many wraps to take off at a time. You know how to make the basic stitch and everything beyond is a variation of that.

Oh thanks for all the kind encouragement posts and likes, I do really appreciate it (y) I did enjoy it this afternoon and I will try to practice this week to try to make things ‘stick’ .
