May I gate crash your thread and be a total bore and be ever so proud and show off my winter crochet project? The cotton comes from my friend's mum who passed away a couple of years ago. She was an amazing crafter and yes, the house was stashed full. Because Jane knows I like crochet she gave me all the crochet cotton. Some of it came in these beautiful boxes. I use a pattern book from the 30-50s hoping they would be the kind of things mum would have made. Although mum was an absolute master crafts woman, I have seen some of the things she made and they were totally amazing, I can't even get close to that. I give the made things back to Jane who distributes them in the family. This was in a size 60 cotton, .75mm hook, about a metre long, took me all winter.

Sophie , What a lovely heirloom you have created for the ladies family .

:welcomesign: We welcome everyone Sophie. You are right to be proud of your work, it's a lovely delicate piece. Did you keep anything back for yourself?
We love to show off our work whatever the craft, and the sharing of patterns, websites and knowledge has kept this thread going for two years.

My creations are very modest compared to SGNV but I have finished my Dad's blanket and also made a mini rainbow. Each square on Dad's blanket is about 17 inches side to side and the rainbow was made up as I went along - just odds and ends of yarn.

Puddleduck You see Helen I could never tackle anything like that - the same with the Mandala things, although I have printed off the instructions. Maybe one day I'll enlarge my repertoire of crochet stitches.

I found all the rainbow colours although I had to steal the yellow and orange from the octopus cotton yarn and will photograph the finished item once I've made pompoms to go on the bottom. The purple thread was so fine I needed six strands.

It's not as complex as it looks but does require attention to the instructions. The most difficult thing was remembering it was in US terminology and working out how many times to wrap the yarn round the hook!!!! If you can work a (UK) treble you could do this as the rest is just where to stick the hook in so to speak. If you can work into a stitch or into a space it's just as easy to work round a post either from the front or the back. Honest :)

I know this thread is about crochet, but if any of you also do dressmaking, you may be interested in this

If any of you sewing/dressmaking folks have not heard of this and would like to help our nurses there is a link here. You can download and print the pattern at home. There is also a way to get a pattern sent to you. You can either buy the material yourself ( eg Wholesale Fabrics) or if you can not afford it there is a way to get the material from a Just Giving Charity that has been set up for this

So beautiful! My grandmother (who taught me to crochet) used to make similar doilies. It is amazing how that generation managed to create such fine things probably in very poor light!

I

Here is my updated c2c jayg effort. I found a very good YouTube tutorial here:

I think I will carry on with it and have it as a lap rug.

Sophie you are so talented it is beautiful and you are not gatecrashing the thread anyone is welcome here

Puddleduck , it is beautiful, your dad will be delighted. You see, I wouldn't have the patience for what you are doing, changing colour, dealing with ends. I always select my pattern so it doesn't have a 'break thread and re-attach' and you have to attach the squares as you go.

I have made myself a piece of paper where I have 'translated' both UK and US terms into the crochet symbols, I then work the pattern from the symbols, if that makes sense. I find the symbols much easier than trying to follow written instructions.

And as to the very fine work. I had to stop knitting (except socks, don't do baby things full stop) as my wrists and hands just couldn't handle the weight, even when resting the jumper on a cushion on my lap. Any needle above 2 or 3 makes my hands seize up in cramp. Bizarrely enough, I can cope with this very fine stuff.

I’ve made a face mask today ?

Nice one, Aly.. May I ask did you line it with anything?

I don't have a machine but am thinking of making some. Doctor on Phone appointment said need several so you can wash and disinfect every time you use them as it's the moisture from breathing which aint good.

I like that one and I have some material I could use... to suit different outfits??? They wont be as professional as yours and the others that are on this thread but I think every bit of protection is a bonus. Xx

I used quilting cotton because it’s got a tight weave. A high thread count pillow slip would be good.
It’s got a pocket so you can add extra padding, some people are using hoover filters. I’ve just done another one and added some iron on interfacing to the outside piece but it feels more difficult to breathe.
