Just priced to update our motorhome 👀

If it's rubbish that people buy for one upmanship what tell o wise one is the function of a Rolex over an argos watch?
Both tell the time & the Argos one probably is probably more accurate.
However I bought my Rolex Submariner because I wanted one as a present to myself for my 50th birthday. It is also an investment which has perfomed better than most of my other investements over the same period. It will probably pass on to my Grandson to do as he wishes with.
I recently bought an Omega seamaster because I wanted one of those as well.

It's one upmanship. Car sales have relied on it for years a lot like a shiny new car to show off to the neighbours even if the old one is really reliable and low mileage. It's the same with clothes jewellery more or less everything.
Without it our economy would collapse!
I change my car every 18-24 months because I like a change and after working up to 100 hours a week since I left school at 15 and running a firm employing a lot of people, don’t give a flying 🤬🤬what people think of me as I buy what I want.
Had a few tell me how lucky I am having a nice car and house, funny that I say the harder I work the luckier I get!!

You may not like my opinion but you still don’t need to be sarcastic do you? I'm sorry if you can’t get someone to bite however you always seem to be trying?🤔
Unfortunately there are some sad people who seem to be jealous of what others have be it a nice van or car🙁🙁

Is that due to discounts available or the exchange rate or both?
The exchange rate a month ago was about the same as when we last bought. The main reason is no discounts where before because of the volume they shift in mainland Europe you could always get a good discount. Also last time trade in price was very good I got £12k more in Belgium than the UK this time with the UK prices soring no difference.
Could have possibly saved £2k max importing but it's getting more difficult so may not save anything so not worth the hassle providing you can get a deal you are happy with.

Having imported a number of times I can confirm that for £2K it really is not worth the hassle.

All 3 vans we have had we have imported, so I know what I'm doing, but for a possible £2k not worth it, in the past savings have been between 10k -25k.

That's a massive assumption on your part.

People buy what they want within the constraints of what they can afford. Why do you think it has anything to do with one upmanship? Perhaps that says more about you than them?

If folk with expensive motorhomes made the same derogatory comments toward those with cheaper vehicles it would be viewed in a very dim light!
The small willies was probably not a very good comment and was supposed to be jokey rather than taken harshly. But the post was made in the context of a previous one saying do people who spend twice as much on a MH have twice as much fun. I still think a lot of people's spending is to do with pride of ownership. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with that as I say our economy would collapse olif we all only bought the basic things that do the job and antiques and artwork would be worthless. I recently bought a Gibson guitar there not cheap and I'm not a fantastic guitarist. I suspect we all do it on some things. As VXman says people do come up with some funny reasons like " the old one needed 4tyres and a service " I suspect quite often because they know it's a frivolous purchase and don't want to admitt it.

But they probably also reach the same destination in their car in a similar time as I do and a lot spend way more than our cars worth. It's what people do one upmanship. Maybe they have small willies!
Yes I've got small wellies!

To be pedantic thats not a function. The basic function is to tell the time. If you want something that tells the time it's likely to be just as accurate to get a cheapo watch or these days just look at your phone. The attraction of the rolex is as you say it's quality and appearance not it's function. In the same way with a lot of posh cars they have a perceived value often badge dependant. But if all you want is to get from a to b especially given the increased speed monitoring it's likely you will get there just as quickly in a cheap car as an expensive one. That doesn't mean we all need to choose the cheapest most basic option but choosing a more expensive one quite often has little to do with performance. The original question I was replying to by a funster was do people spending two three or four times as much on a motorhome have two three or four times as much fun.

So all the people that have motorhomes worth 2, 3 or even 4 times the price of ours, do you get 2,3 or 4 times the fun out of it do you think ?
It depends on what you get up to in it! :giggle: Our Carthago cost nearly double what our previous PVC did but it was what we wanted for practical reasons - better winterisation, very similar size so we could still go where we want to but has a lot more storage and internal space making it feel much more spacious. We also got better kit which we wanted, including a large 3-way fridge, 3-burner hob, oven & grill, larger water tanks, better heating, L-shaped lounge, larger beds (a double each!). These are important to us and not stuff we got just for for the sake of it or to 'show off', we couldn't give a jot what others thing in this regard, we got what suits US - if someone else likes it that's fine, if not then that's fine too, just as what they have is up to them and nothing to do with us.

We now have a much more comfortable 'home' for touring around in especially for long trips (up to 3 months) and we'd find it hard to go back to a PVC with the limitations it had, the smaller space was manageable but not ideal especially with 3 dogs. It is virtually perfect for us and we have no desire to change it even after 3 years - we had our eyes on the Compactline range when it was first launched but at the time couldn't afford it, however when we saw them again a few years later for a really good price and a great deal overall we knew it was likely the only time we'd have the opportunity to get one so we did. Would we have preferred to pay less to get what we have? Yup, but we don't regret paying it to get what we have as it has given us a lot of pleasure, more than if we still had a PVC.

I think having a £50K (or whatever they cost) Rolex is willie waving. It doesn't function any better than a £10 watch and if you want it because it looks nice, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives that will do that too.

On the buying new cars for the sake of it - my example of a friend replacing every few years can't be Willie waving as he tends to buy bog standard, middle of the road, boring cars. (Maybe he thinks it impresses???)

I think my 10 year old RS Mégane Cup or my 20 year old VX220 is more Willie waving but I have those as a love good handling performance cars and by that score these are excellent value for money.

Back to motorhomes. My 60K motorhome is exactly the same same size and layout as many 100K plus motorhomes. That's not to say a 100K one might be of better quality but for me I couldn't justify spending the extra 40K. (I could afford to it's not in my make up to spend more than is necessary)

It does the job I need it to and it does it very well. I don't see me changing it for many years, if ever.

We're in the same camp with the money spending having saved for years it's hard to suddenly go the other way and spend it!. We're trying harder now though!

Life took a different direction for us 12 months ago…….spend, spend, spend. (y)

Not really;) possibly a cheapo watch but not a specialist timepiece like a Rolex (other expensive watches are available) some people wear nice watches and can't even read the dial  whatever item from watch to motorhome we all have our unique requirements, I have watches I don't wind up or even wear so telling the time is obviously not high on my list of requirements, when we wanted a motorhome we had some specific requirements and these were not fulfilled by budget models, although to some ours is a budget model"

I think of rolexs as jewellery rather than watches. As such the only function is pride of ownership and decoration.

We find it very difficult to spend even though we could, sounds daft I know but having had to scrimp and save for many years when we first got married with the high mortgage interest rates, not spending comes as second nature now so splashing the cash for the sake of it is hard.

I said to hubby just yesterday that I want another electric grill, the George Foreman type we have at present is ideal for 2 people but it doesn't have removable plates so cleaning it takes ages as I can't jut stick the plates in a bowl to soak, having had to clean it 3 times this week the 'novelty' has worn off and some of the non-stick coating is starting to wear (we've had it a while!), so I'm now on the hunt for one to splash the cash on ... unless of course I see one at a car boot sale in the meantime!

Probably not. My first yacht was 21ft plywood with an outboard motor, 9v battery lighting and a bucketNchuckit. My last one was 30ft GRP with heating, big inboard diesel,Roller reefing on main and foresail and all manner of electronics. Same amount of fun, just with a bit more comfort commensurate with my ageing bones. As the saying goes "money doesn't make you happier, it just lets you look for it in more places"

I own a rose gold Rolex, and very nice it is too, I also own other high end watches - no doubt you'll be accusing me of 'willie waving'... quite difficult in my case though as I am a woman!

It does function better than a £10 watch and it also looks a hell of a lot better... don't knock something till you've tried it :giggle:

Yes, I think you're right when applied to men wearing 'nice' watches. My husband has some beautiful watches - the only other adornment he has is his wedding ring. A nice watch gives men the chance to be a bit flamboyant without actually wearing jewellery.

Not sure how it functions better than a £10 watch in terms of telling the time but I can accept the jewellery aspect of it if you like that sort of thing. I don't wear anything in that sense. I just find it annoying. Stopped wearing watches over 10 years ago.

Horses for courses..Good job we are all different. My tiny AutoSleeper Symbol is 20 years old with 70k on the clock.Had it 6 years,,do usually 2 X 89 days a year in Europe..never ever let me down.. I am 77,,wonder which one of us will last the longer 😄😉😉BUSBY.

Well our new motorhome has arrived at dealers on schedule and we went to give it the once over today - even though it was raining cats and dogs!! The excitement of going was immense and yes it was a large spend but you Cant take it with you!! If we hadn’t ordered at the show in Feb we would have been looking at an additional £14k now!! Looking forward to delivery hopefully 28 October - subject to DVLA and the registration process. Must say the build quality of the Elddis looks to be excellent with no obvious problems at first inspection. See how the hand over goes and how well we make the switch from caravan to Motorhome. Hopefully we will have some fantastic times and it will be money well spent.

At our German dealer having annual damp check (€105 compared to last year in UK £230+!)

As you do, looked at current models and got into discussion about prices.

Costed our model from 2018 order (2019 delivery) plus a few extras like self levelling and air suspension.

Cost increase of €100,000 and an estimated delivery of 12 months. No price guarantee as Dethleff have only assured costs until June 23 on firm orders.

Just waiting to have the value on ours confirmed to see how much of a shortfall we have or need a much bigger premium bond win than received to date 😂.
What's the dealers name for habitation check please

The wife has a Rolex, bought second hand, I wear an Omega Speedmaster, also bought second hand. We were outside a posh jewellers, in Rome, the sort with a man at the door. He beckoned us inside and we were asked if we were interested in anything particular.
I was looking at some nice solitaire diamond earrings, about 1/3rd carat each for her birthday. As it happened, we got a deal on them, but the salesman did compliment me on my watch, as he had the same. It was probably why we got asked inside.
I wear my Omega because I like the mechanical movement and it's space watch (worn on the moon), it's also very easy to read at a glance, not because it expensive.
