John’s cross

James has already described the circumstances at length in this same thread. See posts #34, 64 and 104.
In short, one of the directors was retiring.
Directors retire all the time but the businesses don't go into administration.

If you read the whole thread you will see that the owner died, not retired. His heir was not interested in the business and decided to close it down. Why they did that, rather than selling it as a going concern, is not known.

Assuming it is actually a solvent liquidation, as opposed to an administration, there can be tax benefits for this method of exit.

Indeed, that's why I wrote: 'In short.....' and pointed out the posts where James had already given full details in this thread.
I have been a very satisfied customer, visiting and using their services for ten years and it's a very sad development for the bereaved, the staff, the business and the customers and I feel that it's inappropriate to add public speculation.

You've addressed this to the wrong person. I was not the one who said anyone had retired.

Does anyone have a full list of what new ventures people from John's Cross have?

Becca and was it Arthur for example?

Morning guys…

Well yes sadly as apparent johns cross motorhomes has closed its doors officially.
I have been proud to be part of the team there since leaving my fathers business some nearly 4 years ago. They welcomed me in as did Peter and it was a pleasure to work with a team that were passionate about the industry as I have always.

I am not going to lie it was a complete shock to walk in after finally have my first weekend off as we were so busy to be faced by a gentlemen waiting to have a meeting with me under the instructions to look to close the business.

I would like to clarify that the business was not struggling and financially in debt far from it was simply a decision by our current director to fold and close due to personal circumstances. Such a shame for a thriving business in a fantastic market trading for over 25 years. As you can imagine a complete shock to all of us as staff.

My instructions was simply to hand over the keys and run through some paperwork and information required of me and then asked to leave. I was not allowed to contact existing customers and even answer the phone so if anyone has been trying to contact me I sincerely apologise it was not my decision as it was taken out of my hands.

As a positive note I am actually in the process of starting my own dealership within the near proximity of johns cross where of course we will be welcoming with open arms all my existing and new customers. So watch this space ☺️

I as I’m sure the whole of johns cross will like to thank our customers for the last years and your kind feedback and comments.

James
I was so sad to see Johns Cross closed. Such a shame! I wish you and the team, all the best in your new ventures. I am from Hastings but live in London now. My family are still in the area and we often visit. We have a camper van. Look forward to visiting your new business when you are trading. Best wishes, Chrissy

James picked up the keys for his new premises on Friday 👍🏻
Very interesting. I PM'd James yesterday about getting service and MOT but it looks like he is no longer a paid up member, so may not be able to answer. Is there any other way I can get in touch? Or tell him to pay up his dues!! :ROFLMAO:

Edit Where are the new premises?

Any update did a new venture get off the ground ?
We received a flyer at Christmas from Caravantech (our supplying dealer) stating that several of the Johns Cross redundant staff had been taken on and Caravantech would be starting mechanical servicing of Motorhomes.

So as a newcomer to this forum am I to assume that there is a Vanbitz connection?
Yes. And James, the person being discussed, who was the sales manager at John’s Cross motorhomes until its closure, is closely related to Eddie.

I’ll add my best wishes for James’ new venture. I bought my current ‘van from him three years or so back. One of life’s good guys.

Yes, we genuinely are a motorhoming family.

I have four grown up Son’s James the eldest who is shortly about to open a new Motorhome sales business with his friend Andy.

Simon who is a Director of Alan Kerr Motorhomes in Torbay.

Ash who is the Van Bitz General Manager (I’m semi retired now) and Nick, our youngest who prefers the technical ’hands on’ side (same as me) so works in the workshops at Van Bitz

I can post some pictures James and Andy’s new place if anyone is interested?

edit: I should say that that the seed was planted when there was only three of them, a toddler and two little boys and we toured Europe for the first time. In those days parking on the Beach, swimming in the Mediterranean every morning was encouraged and pretty bloody amazing
