I woke up this morning and thought oh my god it is so cold I need to put the boiler on then I told myself, just get dressed, starting with a warm jumperI'd start with warmer clothes.

Gina.
Do we really want to go back to living like we did 50 or 60 years ago. What happened to progress?I bet a high percentage of people on MF grew up with ice on the INSIDE of their bedroom windows in the morning and the phrase central heating wasn't invented.
Do we NEED to put the heating on yet?
Did we have a deprived upbringing without central heating?
Are we a lot of wussies and not "hard' like our ancestors?
With the power companies and market traders stealing billions from us it is time to think about these questions.
Just think if every house hold turned off their heating the price might come down.
Every day is a Christmas Day just like Valentine’s DayIt's not Christmas Day yet so why would it be on?
Yes both usually a disappointment !Every day is a Christmas Day just like Valentine’s Day
That was our house too but we had a coal fire with a back boiler and Mum got up at 6:30 to rake out ashes and start the fire. Nightwear was kept in the warming oven next to the fire so both dressing and undressing was done in front of the fire.I bet a high percentage of people on MF grew up with ice on the INSIDE of their bedroom windows in the morning and the phrase central heating wasn't invented.

Totally agree with you, managing costs for energy consumption is not the same as not using it. Everyone’s situation is different and whilst I could cover the costs of our energy consumption managing the cost means still being warm 19-21c and have halved our electric costs. This year there will only be lights on the Xmas tree but not the normal multi festive lights around the house. The air fryer, the slow cooker all are helping.Do we really want to go back to living like we did 50 or 60 years ago. What happened to progress?
OMG I’m never disappointed but I guess I live in a love and loving bubbleYes both usually a disappointment !
We're volunteers on the village hall trustees. We're looking at opening the hall more in the winter as a warm space that people can visit and save heating bills plus have a social day out. It's going to take some organising if we do it as there would need to be some activities and careful wording of what's on offer as "if you're too poor to heat your home come to this" would probably put almost everyone off.Totally agree with you, managing costs for energy consumption is not the same as not using it. I appreciate not everyone can cover the costs of the increased energy costs let alone increase in food and will be donating to charities that are helping those who have little.
Absolutely no shaming should be there but social meet-up and people will comeWe're volunteers on the village hall trustees. Already half-dressed I sleep in my underwear, T shirt and leggings so I am ready to take the dogs out as soon as I wake up, quick swig of mouthwash and ready to goI usually start with my underwear and work my way up to a warm jumper
supposed to be back up to 33º at the weekend again. In the north of Spain van heating on for past week....off home tomorrow to Murcia... Air Conditioning will be chugging away...as will chilled San Miguel....,
Why ? A DD is for variable amounts that is why they were in vented .standing orders are for fixed so I can't see why they'd be telling you it was less?I’ve just had an email from octopus to say this months DD will be £33 instead of £100,
For me everything would go before any vehicle. The van would go before I would stop putting on heating.
how can it be progress if you can't afford to turn it on?Do we really want to go back to living like we did 50 or 60 years ago. What happened to progress?
I doubt it .It doesn't put off those with iphones ,newish cars, sky tv, etc, etc, from queuing at the food banks?r as "if you're too poor to heat your home come to this" would probably put almost everyone off.
The reason mine is less this month is that the remaining amount is payed by the government, apparently this will happen for the next couple of months. What's central heating? None here .
We basically have what I grew up with a fire.

If the house is well insulated as all ours in the UK were & paid for by us, as well as being more or less hermetic , then leaving heating on all the time controlled by thermostat should not be a problem?
I would guess that most people want windows open from what I have observed in the UK & I have no idea why?
One thing we have never done. In fact I don't think I have ever opened a window except when it has been far too hot inside?
A slightly more accurate answer is yours is less because the government decided that everyone had to pay for their energy on tick in a couple of years time ( after all the only money they have is ours!)The reason mine is less this month is that the remaining amount is payed by the government, apparently this will happen for the next couple of months.
Hi Richard, rest assured, we have returned to base Murcia this morning.... don't suppose we will need the heating until mid December...looking for the Air conditioning remote just now..What's central heating? None here .

Very uncharitable ?It doesn't put off those with iphones ,newish cars, sky tv, etc, etc, from queuing at the food banks?
It’s also hard to buy or pay for anything without a piece of technology. So in many ways in modern Britain you would be handicapped by not having oneVery uncharitable ?
I'm sure there are a few who are like that but there are a lot that are really struggling and there will be many more over the winter.
Did you read this in the Daily Fail ?
gus-lopez In addition, many folk have long term contacts that they could afford before they lost their jobs or their bills went up so much. Hence, there could be folk with newish cars, mobile phones etc but are eligible for food banks. They could have had enough savings to survive for a few months without work but are struggling now. It’s also hard to buy or pay for anything without a piece of technology. People will often buy cheap phones from the likes of CEX
It’s very costly to come out of a PCP car contract, having said this a friend was paying £350 per month for a ford ranger the contract came to an end and a new ranger was around £500 per month the dealer was desperate to get the truck off him but the contract allowed my friend to pay a balloon payment and then via his company and in his wife’s name it’s now a pcp for 6 years at £120 per month.gus-lopez In addition, many folk have long term contacts that they could afford before they lost their jobs or their bills went up so much. A friend of mine gets a car allowance. I'm not sure of the details but the contract had an option to pay a final amount at the end and own the car. With the jump in second hand prices he got quotes to sell it to other dealers and bought it and sold it on the same day at a decent profit. I've always treated vehicles as a depreciating item tend to buy used 6 months old and keep them 7 or 8 years. Our current Octavia diesel estate still drives great at 82k miles I suspect it's going to be around a good few years yetIt’s very costly to come out of a PCP car contract, having said this a friend was paying £350 per month for a ford ranger the contract came to an end and a new ranger was around £500 per month the dealer was desperate to get the truck off him but the contract allowed my friend to pay a balloon payment and then via his company and in his wife’s name it’s now a pcp for 6 years at £120 per month.
But imagine someone had a PCP @ £500 per month lost thier job…. Or the Mortage is going sky high
Sounds like your friend had a good deal 2nd hand low milage is a good way to go.
