Is your central heating on yet

SWMBO thinks she has turned it on by increasing the temperature on the thermostat, luckily she has no idea the boiler is set to hot water only and I may have forgotten to show her how change it and also luckily for me she doesn’t check out this forum.

Now why does that remind me of one of old-mo's jokes?

Hubbie tells his wife "best put yer coat on." "Why, are we going out?" she asks.

"I am, down t'pub and I'm turning heating off"

Yes read the link. But we have a lot of insulation in the cavity I doubt it's going to be a big problem. It would be interesting to have the heat on constant and low then measure the outside wall temperature and do the same just on as needed. I think the thing that's clear is insulate like never before
Absolutely spot on insulation is a big thing, whilst it was contentious the insulate Britain group had a point and many may wish that there were government initiatives to insulate homes.

I insulated my hot tub it was costing around £5 per day back in May and adding kingspan brought this down to £2 and much less in the heat wave

We have the kickboard heater switched on and as we will shortly be getting the £66 a month discount from the government I may actually turn the temperature to warm 🤣
I’ve just had an email from octopus to say this months DD will be £33 instead of £100, I’m £380 in credit at the moment. I also received an email from from Ovo energy to say that the £39.61 they owe me will be payed into my account, from which the payment is made, within 10 working days ! Which is good as I left ovo six years ago, one of the reasons I left them was because they were useless, seems like they haven’t improved.

Ours is on constantly but controlled by room stats and trv's so it comes on mainly in the morning for getting up time. Electric kept tripping last Friday and eventually tracked it down to the boiler. Pump had been slowly leaking and running into a zone valve tripping the electrics. The place got colder as the weekend came and went and it was no fun boilng water for washing so it was a great relief when it was fixed yesterday.

I think reducing the cost of heating your hot tub sounds very middle class when talking about saving energy! But yes anything you save is good for the planet and pocket. I think part of the package to reduce the impact of the energy costs ought to have been insulation I would have thought reducing use is a lot cheaper than installing capacity

I think thats a fallacy. If the house is warm all the time it will lose more heat to the outside and you're going to have to burn more fuel to replace the lost heat. Also I think I'm right in saying that modern boilers are more efficient at high heat levels maybe The Ex-Gasman can comment
Modern condensing boilers are most efficient with a lowish flow temperature and a return temperature below 60 Deg max, but the boiler is only part of the efficiency an efficient system is just as important

No heating on at home but we're away at the moment and the heating is on evenings and also this morning. Home tomorrow and hope we are warm enough

Some people have medical issues. I’m in shorts and tee shirt, but I cater for someone who may have jumpers, socks even gloves on but is still cold……so heating goes on if they’re cold. (y)

Never shut our heating off, rely on the thermostat. It started coming on four days ago, high of 12° here today.

Heating has been on a couple of nights and will be on later tonight.
I'm in the fortunate position I can afford to run a van.
The van would go before I would stop putting on heating.

When has lighting the wood burner not counted as putting on heating anyway

Like probably a lot of folk on here I was brought up in a house with thick stone walls, single glazed and main heating was a coal fire.
Frost on the inside of the windows in winter was the norm.
I have no intention of going back or being in a cold house.
We live in a cooler part of the country generally but I like it here and I'm not moving.

Turned boiler on a couple of nights ago and I remembered that the room stat was u/s. Mate came around and wired new room stat in and still wouldn’t work, circuit board must have dry joint,
This boiler has been a lot of trouble so new one going in tomorrow and a nice long warranty

Heating was tested this week. Replaced all TRV’s around three years ago with Honeywell smart TRV’s and heat the rooms we need to at different times of day etc. Saved me loads as I work from home and now heat the office and not the whole house. Different zones for upstairs and downstairs, a great purchase which should help even more as the cost of gas increases.

I hope it isn't on. Switched everything off beginning of September. It won't be going on until the beginning of December.
Currently sitting outside enjoying 27° of evening sunset with a few glasses of wine.

Can monitor back home from here in Rhodes!
30° by day and 23° at night here so NO!

Today. Home after four weeks travel. Refusing to give up my shorts until 1st Nov though.

I'm aiming to not put ours on until the end of October. We are concentrating on finishing the extension and getting some flooring/carpets down first. I can't hack the though of the heat just escaping through all the gaps 💸

At present we've still got the fan on in the bedroom and the window stays open all year round, the radiator is only on 1 in there.

Girls are in the loft and the boy is in the front which are all naturally warm rooms anyway.

Not caved in yet as burning oil is so expensive. I will be lighting the wood burner tomorrow; it is all stacked up and ready to go as it is getting rather cold here in the Derbyshire Dales.

No heating on yet, however in our last house we had a remote type of control for boiler and as Mrs Westy didn’t know how to work it to bring the heating on (which suited me fine) she stuck it in the fridge and voila, on came the heating Grrrr🤷‍♂️

I think the best thing to do is put the heating on when you feel cold, or is that too obvious?
Not if you are a single mum/dad with kids on benefits, pensioner on state pension, on a low income or zero hours contract etc. etc.

My wife had an illness that became much worse if she was cold so the heating would have to be on for her no matter how hot I felt, however since she passed away in February the heating has very rarely been on, even now if needed it will only be on low.

Well the van heating has been on here in France as it’s been down to 3 degrees some nights 😳😳

At home, I have it set at 21 so usually from end of September it is on. Doubt this year will be any different. But the north east can get a wee bit nippy at times and I like to be comfortable in a tee shirt etc in the home 🙄🙄

My brother was a coal miner he used to get as much free coal as he needed to fire up his boiler. I would go and visit him in the winter, and he would be in a vest, shorts and flip flops his house was so hot it used to drive me insane as I would be in my winter clothes.

"However, it's not quite that clear-cut. Some specialists disagree – and argue you should keep the heating on constantly for an entirely different reason.

They advocate keeping the heating on low all day, turning all radiator valves up to the max and the boiler down to the minimum, and say the problem with turning the heating on and off is that every time it's turned off, condensation collects within the walls. This condensation can help conduct heat outside the home, they say – meaning you leak heat more quickly and so will use more energy as a result."

I was advised to leave my heating on low all the time, but it’s set at 16degrees so hasn’t come on yet. The temp indoors has not dropped past 17 yet.
My house is based on an old building (nearly 200 yrs) and I’ve recently had to spend £4k-ish on sorting out damp, which is partly caused by an issue which to 100% resolve would involve completely removing and rebuilding a large chunk of the gable end at a substantial five figure sum. The latter was way out of my means. But maintaining even temperatures and having a steady and unobstructed air flow have both been advised by specialists, for my situation at least.
I have blankets folded ready on my sofa for evening warmth, and a hot water bottle for a warm nest in bed.
I’m currently in the van, where the temperature as I type is a ‘balmy’ (barmy!) 12 degrees as I type but I’m about to clear up and go to bed under my winter weight wool duvet!

Yep Gina nowt Wrong with a warm home.
Always been the same. Has to be warm enough to have shorts and tee shirt on. Sod the cost and up north that’s a canny bill 😂😂
