heating oil, ouch!

Not a great fan of kiln dried, counter productive green credentials in my view. However natually dried is carbon neutral and highly a highly efficient source of green heat.
Like I said in my previous post. The chimney used to dry these logs chucks out a hell of a lot of smoke 🤷‍♂️ but I suppose it must be "good" smoke if the Government is paying grants for them 😁

Feeling smug that we sold our house with oil fired heating last year and went full time in the van. Irish passport means we've spent the winter in Spain in a van that runs a diesel heater and hob, happy days. I'm also feeling a bit smug that I convinced my Dad to spend 4k Euro updating his oil heating. He's 88 and we reckoned 4 to 5 years to get his money back so query if was worth doing, he'll recoup the cost in the first year (it was a very old and very rubbish system).

We only burn wood that we have stored for at least a year, usually two by the time winter comes around and we are ready to use them. Oil ordered Monday last week and delivered Saturday @64p+ per litre, but this for Glowmax. Couple of days later on the Monday Boilerjuice, who we always quote to our supplier, were quoting 75p.

Today: Boilerjuice and Direct Oil

Just had a quote this evening for heating oil £1.10 pl +vat it was 78pl last week.
Anyone recommend a log burner?

We have 2; a Dru 78CB (cast iron) and a Burley Wakerley 9112 (steel). The Dru is the most controllable, has a side door as well as a front door and can be fitted with a rear vent direct to the outside (meaning you don't get a draught through the house). We had a rear vent fitted to ours and I'd recommend it to anyone. The Burley is mesmerising to watch but not as controllable and not as safe to load, as you have to open the huge door all the way to get logs in. Having said that, now I've got the hang of it I can load it and have it burning for 3 to 4 hours before needing another log on it. It's super efficient! :)

I thought that too. My Log business neighbour was given a substantial grant from the Government to build an oven to dry kiln logs. So the article I read must have been wrong. I think it is, as you say, people who burn wet logs and newly felled trees who are causing the problem. By wet logs I mean not seasoned logs. You used to cut logs then leave them to dry in log stores in the old days!! but some people think it is ok to just chuck logs on the fire freshly cut. That is where you get the toxins from when you burn them.

Not to mention tarred up flues and a serious risk of a chimney fire! I can't believe people actually do that

I would take some convincing that selling property for a van was a good financial choice.

The wood burner has probably saved us quite a few quid this winter. Now where do we get the free logs :ROFLMAO:
In order to get my free logs I have to inhale a lot of smoke and look at a really ugly high steel chimney from my landing window, but it's worth it (y):giggle: see my edited post. To be fair, I only get the smoke on low pressure days.

I can see that, but why sit there in an already very expensive property that's only going to make more money? We have no dependants, can't take it with us, are young enough to enjoy it and have worked hard, invested well and aren't going short. We also have no intention of ever buying again in the UK so had to sell at some point, people were desperate to move out of London and it sold for a lot more than it should have. Happy days.

Luckily the adverts for many suppliers say they are mainly sourcing their energy from renewables so there shouldn't be any price hike - oh hang on maybe they aren't after all 😡
Yes - It's all nonsense.

For example, scotland proudly trumpets that it now generates almost 100%* of it's demand from renewables; yet the reality is in summer it is in surplus and exports energy to the rest of the UK and in winter in imports from England - and much of English generation is still fossil-fuel based (gas). So overall, only about half of its demand is supplied by renewables.

*I think the English figure is about 40%.

Similar to the renewable pellets imported from Canada 🙄

First quote I got on Friday £1.25 per litre, managed to get it down to 97p !!!! Was paying around 60p not so long ago and 35p 6 years ago.....😠🤬

I've been doing a few more 'living cost' calculations today and in light of a pending European market collapse and a potential crude oil price of c.$200-220 then I'm expecting heating oil costs to hit the £1.60 mark and diesel to reach around £2.10/litre, assuming there's no UK Govt intervention. I'll be using these figures for my spreadsheet as I don't wish to get caught out.

Crude hit $139.13 earlier today before resting at $130.......and this is just the start of the big rises.

At this rate I might have to get a job at McDonald's to help keep warm and fed.

The price of oil is not good, but on the plus side you don’t have a standing charge to pay that’s increasing

I guess that’s because you pay for and maintain the storage tank , plus pay for the oil to be delivered , albeit buried in the price 🤔👍

I’m sure you once said David that you leave the van on permanent EHU at home and the heating on low electric setting permanently. Are you continuing to do that now that everything is getting expensive?

I am, but temp set to 8C so very rarely cuts in (I hope) and only on 1Kw 👍

Usually use Boilerjuice as they are always competitive. Can’t put off ordering any longer, Boilerjuice unable to deliver in my area at this time 😳. Checked around cheapest I could get 96.7p / ltr delivered in 5 days from Compass Fuel 🙁
Will be like this for a long while I think

I'm thinking of getting a wood burner fitted for next winter as we're fully reliant on gas for heat , I can see gas shortages or rationing if you can afford it
We have an oil Rayburn which has proven very tricky and even now after spending a fortune on it can be hit and miss if it heats properly. Thank goodness for our wood burners which have kept downstairs lovely and warm (and I suppose for the trees who sacrificed themselves during the last three storms):giggle:

You mean people actually maintain their tanks, I thought nothing was done unless it was leaking. Haha

This morning Boilerjuice had shot up to 130p from 120p yesterday - bonkers

Looked online for local suppliers and found some at 107p so bought 500 litres to keep us going.

Looks like Boilerjuice is driving up prices, so will shop around next time

We’ve just moved in to a new (to us) house, first thing we did was have the wood burner stove man out as we’d planned to have one when we moved. Have a 5Kw one being fitted in June, expensive as it’s a British manufactured log burner but looking at the fuel costs rising daily maybe it isn’t that expensive after all!!

I would think all log burners etc have gone up in price with the metal prices rising

Probably will be soon but we’d been looking for a couple of months before we moved and the cost didn’t seem to have gone up by much from then, can’t say what they were a year ago though. We could buy a cheap Chinese one for half the price but decided to support a British (based in Isle of Wight) manufacturer.
