GB would also exclude The Isle of Wight, Anglesey, all the Scottish Island etc etc. I know that is pedantic but Great Britain is, geographically just the large island. Of course general usage means that the smaller islands of the British Isles are included in GB (but still not Northern Ireland).

Any bets as to when an additional sticker of ENG, SCO, NI or WALES is also required? (slap on the wrist as that could be a political question but wasn't meant to be).

Country identifier initials are ruled by the Geneva Convention of Road Traffic 1949 and The Vienna Convention 1968. The codes are allocated by The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, not our government. UK government can decide what we put on our UK number plate, but the rest of the world will require a separate GB sticker as well when we visit their country.

According to the article:

The Government has told the UN secretary-general that it will be changing the sign needed on British vehicles when abroad.

Hopefully they will tell those actually on the ground it would now be 'UK' & not 'GB'?

and every law enforcement agent on the Contenant will know of the change within 24 hours ……

as long as they pass it on to those actually doing the work

still reads as nothing changed on the .gov website

Foreign office info does not change"in advance" but at the moment of actuation.

But surely the .gov website should be the first to be updated, before a press release, if I were spending £40 on new plates today I'd be a bit cheesed off if I checked the place I should check , took their information as gospel and ordered them.

No. It is the same when asking questions for information & the same also with embassies,whether UK or foreign. They will state in writing what the situation is now even when everyone knows that it is changing at 1 minute past midnight to something else. The get out they use is to tell you to check before you do anything. They will not state what may or may not be being introduced only what is the state of play at this moment.

All I have ever had is a St George cross and 'ENG' sticker. The only comments I get are from occasional continental motorhomers curious as to what it means? They usually think it's some obscure Eastern European republic and walk away bemused when I tell them.
Never had any official observation or fine.
BTW, underneath that is the ubiqutious EU stars. How many cars here still display that and will go on doing so until scrapped?
