Getting back to Europe

We have both had both Jabs and had the tunnel booked for 18th May but due to the problems in France, the uncertainty over travelling through to Spain have now cancelled and booked ferry Portsmouth to Santander for the 25th May. Hopeful that all will be OK and back early August.
After our trip was cut short last March and had to return we simply can't wait to get some Mediterranean sun

Yesterday I bit the bullet and applied for a voucher for our cancelled eurotunnel trip. We still hope to, well John does, get to Spain late September but it is wait and see as with so many others.
Have booked a few places for this year in UK booked well before opening was announced 'just in case' so we should have our breaks with the grandkids as usual, also lucky in that we have friends with a cs and we are classed as regulars, they dont have toilet or showers but do have eletric and it is in a lovely area for walking and siteseeing Bus and, (wasnt too good last time we tried) pub near by.
We all have to do what is right for us.

Please please please can people say MY Wife. Who on earth is THE wife? Women don’t usually say THE husband?!!!
Is "her indoors" acceptable? 😳

I have been told that free passage through France was a condition of the tunnel agreement but have no idea where to find evidence to substantiate it.
Freedom of Movement provisions in general? At the time of the instructions to leave Spain and France and return to UK because of COVID, there were quite a few posts on social media pointing out that, whilst individual Member States could close borders [mainly to deter new arrivals/people 'chancing it', EU Freedom of Movement Regs required [in this case Brits] to be allowed unfettered crossing of Borders to be able to return to UK.

Where I was born, the normal term is 'the umman' ... Rather like the Gardener who bounced into the posh lady's lounge and said, 'Mrs Smithe, the new load of muck for the garden has arrived'. When Mrs Smith's visitor said that the Gardener's terminology was rather coarse, Mrs Smith replied, 'My dear, it's taken us 15 years to get him to use the word 'muck' ...' 😂

They can if they want, better than some ways they describe them

I usually refer to Basia(Barbara) as Basia. Sometimes 'my OH'(other half) if there is no time to describe who Basia is in the relationship, but I would never say 'The OH'

I think that using a 'The' in front of any reference is a bit demeaning as it turns a person into an object.

I know it is sometimes done in jest, but it can become a habit.

In lighter mode I always like the line at a party when a husband says 'Have you met my first wife?' - when she still is.

'Have you met the current Mrs Marchie? She's an electrician ...' 😂 And a real bright spark at ohm.

Off topic, but is Basia a 'pet' name. I have a friend called Barbara of Polish origins who is always called Basia within the family. Never heard it anywhere else.

I’m SWMBO and quite right too!
Wasn't it Rumpole of the Bailey [by John Mortimer] who introduced the term SWMBO? And Arfur Daley, whom Rumpole may well have been called upon to defend, who took the term slightly downmarket by amending it to 'Er Indoors'.

I believe that the term 'the wife' may date back to ancient times, when women were chattels of their respective husbands. This ceased in 1935 with the passing of the Married Women and Tortfeasors Act. Might come in useful in a Pub Quiz, while the wife's getting the drinks in ... 😂

Nearly all Barbaras in Poland are Called Basia, but then most Christian names are abbreviated - Basia's two sons' names are Thomas and Jakob but are called Tomek and Kuba.

Barbara is very common here in Silesis because it is a coal mining area and the Patron Saint of miners is St. Barbara.

Hi and welcome to the fun house. 🤪 I usually say my hubby, I can't say I've ever heard him refer to me as 'the wife' or to think about it 'my wife'! ... should I be worried?

Saying 'the' can be taken more than one way, for example 'the wife' implies that the person has a wife (if it was someone else's wife she would usually be referred to as his/her wife), where as 'my wife', whilst it makes it clear it is their own wife to me can imply more 'ownership' than 'the' wife does. However I appreciated that 'the wife' can also come across as dismissive of the importance of a wife if one is so inclined to think that way.

So thinking along the line of cats and dogs ... wives are 'cats' in the sense that no-one owns us, whereas men are 'dogs' as they are always owned by their wives/female partners! :giggle:

Are we allowed the Mrs or SWMBO ?
I don't have a problem, especially with the latter as of course there should be no question that SWMBO is most definitely an acknowledgement that she is right!

And men call women 'Birds' 'cos they pick up worms ... And because they're henpecked .... (y) 😂. But the last word should go the wife ...

To women, marriage is just a word; but, to man, it is a sentence. And, remember that man is incomplete until he is married; then he is truly finished...

Is the hole deep enough yet?

Steve

Just remember, happy wife, happy life. :giggle:

I had my second jab yesterday, 3 weeks earlier than expected. We think that we will wait until September before we return to France. I fancy sitting at the side of the Seine on my 75th birthday early in November.
I too have my 75th Birthday early in November Casper. On which side of the Seine will you be sitting ?

We enjoy Balena Alegre because of the large secluded pitches and proximity to spacious beach. And also due to its proximity to Sant Marti and Empurie.
Few other sites nearby but pitches are a bit tight and lack privacy.
We used to be regulars at the earlier Balena Alegra site at Castadefells but that was starting 60 yrs ago!
We love that area too.

In fact we have been going to L’escala a few times a year since about 2004.

Not so keen on the Sant Marti restaurants these days but there is a beach bar on the beach just below Sant Marti that has a cold beer with my name on it.(y)

We love the walk from Sant Marti along to L'escala

It is the one to the left of that long concrete pier as you look out to sea from Sant Marti.

A perfect place to get stuck in on a hot day (y)

Have to say we are really looking forward a week in France, maybe around The Picos (might take the Wing).

COVID-19, like leprosy and the bubonic plague was, is highly contagious!

Why on earth would you travel overseas when the infection and death rates are so high?

Just because YOU have had your "jabs" does not mean that you are not a carrier and acting as a mobile petri dish.

Also, many hospitals in Europe are at breaking point - what do you do if you have a medical emergency?

Not trying to be a killjoy but I simply do not understand why you can't just wait it out!

France ICU at 117% so not much room for ill folks even if not Covid related

#208. Is that a general statement to all?
In our case we would only go when the all clear in Europe is confirmed.
