German supermarkets

Oddly, I've never been to Germany because of the food.

Lucky you having Waitrose and M&S.

Our nearest Waitrose is over 50 miles away and tiny M&S stores 26 miles (either East or West).

Local Sainsbury has been less than helpful during the lockdown (and me shielding - sending less than half my shopping one week and no delivery allowed for another 7 days) but Morrisons went above and beyond, the Manager and a small chosen team do personal shopping for people with special requirements. Last Tuesday they didn't have a couple of the things I wanted and then made a special trip on the Wednesday with just two items when they came back into stock. Again a 26 mile trip each way.

Sorry, getting off topic.

Ka de we in Berlin, department store, I've never seen so many floors or a store so vast.
You need a mortgage to buy a bun though.

We went to the toy section for something for the grandkids, there was a lovely Barbie table football reduced to 20000 euros, yes twenty thousand. I still have the photo somewhere.
I went around 30 years ago 👍
I remember the stools around the food hall counters on the top floor if I remember correctly.
Live eels etc too 😂
Berlin was great 👍

Do you mean Iceland the country?
No the shop
that some of these ready made quickie meals are made in factory's and dumped in containers with different supermarket packaging. Go figure.
No different to meat processing plants that supply multiple supermarkets. It was Nothing to see the same product, same weight , same packaging, just different labels & with a price variation from £1,80 to £3,50

quick question about Germany.

Where do you lot go shopping?

Im clearly a shop snob. At home we go to Waitrose, or M&S. I may be dragged in Sainsbury’s but I am likely to have a tantrum there.

But in Germany we both really struggle. We absolutely HATE Lidl and Aldi. They are like some weird sort of boot sale come trade Cash & Carry.

What is Germany’s decent supermarket?

In France we are good plenty of big supermarkets to pick from and stay away from the two crappy German ones. Easy.

Ps I’m not interested in people telling me how good Aldi and Lidl are, they aren’t they are discount shops, full of odd products and zero room to move round.

Shopping is the least of your worries. How could you possibly contemplate going to a stellplatz and have to park near other people, no, you will have to confine yourself to commercial sites where there are large pitches with hedges to separate them so you don't have to look at others or speak to them. Emptying a cassette will be an issue, presumably you will want a full hazmat outfit before you go near the facilities. :giggle: This may be familiar

Ohh. Someone is very protective over their discount German supermarket.

I’m quite happy going to stellplatz and aires, thanks, and I don’t even wear gloves for the toilet jobs. I just get on with it. I just don’t want to buy food from car boot sale where the staff can’t even be bothered to put the stock on the shelves. It’s all good for you old farts that have all the time in the world as your retired but to me my time is important so I prefer some quality whilst on holiday

This is the last steak I bought. From a butcher. Not a packet in a garage sale, and not a premade plastic meal that is full of preservatives.

But each to their own.

Surely a decent Cote De Boeuf or thick cut fillet or rib eye would have been better.

Try Kaufmarkt although you may find the layout baffling. There is also Penny, and Netta. Aldi and Lidl dominate though. Cannot see what you problem is unless you expect to buy exclusively the big brands at bigger prices for less value for money. Get a life mate, I would say

Anyone know the difference between Aldi and Aldi Süd ?

Thanks. Got the life, and it’s too short to spend in shite shops. May try the others instead.
