German supermarkets

I hate shopping with a passion, so IF I have to go, I want it nice. I’m on holiday and we are shopping for two people for a couple of days that is it

There's no snobbery about Lidl here. But they don't stock cavier so we shop elsewhere.

I believe they sell lumpfish roe, if all you want is something black and salty for the crackers, and it's about £1000/lb cheaper.... :giggle:

Germany Edeka or Aldi
Austria Billa or Hofer👍

Me too. For years I've taken exactly the same route around my supermarket like an Amazon warehouse robotic order picker.

Yes unfortunately. Earlier this week. What a horrid place. Tiny, little choice, jumble sale thing in the middle and no butcher.
Tiny means cosy, little choice means cheaper goods, I've bought some great tools in their jumble sale and their meat is first class. Gosh, you ARE a snob, and I'm not joking!

As long as your happy you carry on. As I said at the start I’m a shop snob. I don’t want shite tools and toilet seats. I want choice and the ability to ask for the joint or size of cut meat that I require. i not bothered about cheap, it’s my holiday.

Just back from Germany and I have to agree with Landy Andy. Aldi and Lidl were dismal, went to each once and that was enough. Rewe is ok but if you want better choice then go the a Rewe Center. Globus were very good but a different type of experience to Waitrose or Marks and Spencer. If you are in the North eg Flensburg do go to City Link, that really is big and good quality. But food shopping in Germany is not a particularly exciting experience. My DiL says the cost of living is less in Germany because of the number if discount shops and I certainly shopped less because I didn't really enjoy it.

Thanks.
I was just asking the question so I could try others when we return. Surprising shopping experience for such a tidy organised country.

Iceland then (y)

& therein lies the problem .The Brits are the only EU nation who shop when they want to buy nothing.

If you think any of them are bad you've never been in a spanish Día % on a saturday night before closing when the south americans trash the place.

I can understand the OP's liking of Waitrose - but Marks & Spencers is (to be polite) absolutely dreadful

It's like stepping back twenty years and full of decrepit old people

Just my opinion, obviously..... 🙂

It is a small food hall M&S, in a posh town, not the normal big place selling Y fronts, and elasticated waist trouser places.

I will go there because no Q’s 👍🏻

We press buttons on an iPad over a week or so, then I drive to either Tesco or sainsbugs and the people put it the car. I’m not allowed to get out of car, then home. Spend over a given amount and no extra cost.
Suits me 😄

Aldi and Lidl don't sell "proper" products and are frequently full of old, poor people. :whistle2:

The "frugal" motorhomers who take away the excess packets of sugar supplied with their tea or coffee at the cafe (I paid for them) are typical Aldi and Lidl shoppers.

Do you mean Iceland the country?

As for doing less shopping, I was only shopping for food anyway. I actually did want to buy something but finding good organic (Bio) food was very difficult and I couldn't find any bacon or cooked meats (ham type) without nitrates. This was even in Globus. Lots of very filling and substantial bakery products everywhere though.

Anybody think it somewhat defeatist for Tesco to be proud to claim that it matches hundreds of prices at Lidl & Aldi. Our homegrown supermarket can't beat the foreigners on price - pathetic and been ripping us off for years!

I only have £42:50 in the bank so it’s Lidl & Aldi for me. Guess what I’m still alive? The taste only lasts until you drink the next mouthful of beer then that’s all you taste.

That is so funny

I do NOT do supermarket shopping. It's almost as bad as watching these numbing soaps.
However, recently (say 1 year) Mrs Bob has been using the German supermarkets. I commented awhile ago that the Lasagne and a couple of other quickie oven dishes were exceptionally nice. She then told me she had been using the Germans on advise of a friend.
To me not initially knowing where the grub had come from yet me volunteering how nice it was was strange in it's extreme. I did say it was better than your M&S, Sainsbury's and the like.
She now buy's other stuff from the Germans, not because she saves pennies but because it's better, in our opinion. She uses other supermarkets for other stuff.

I do know (cause i read it in the Daily Mail so it must be true eh) that some of these ready made quickie meals are made in factory's and dumped in containers with different supermarket packaging. Go figure.

We've been using Tesco home deliveries just lately rather than Aldi, and as far as we're concerned the drop in quality is noticeable, particularly those items which are 'price matched'. Price maybe, but not quality

ps We've had some bargains from the centre aisle over the years

But disparaging in the extreme, especially to regular LIDL shoppers like us!
John

As a regular Lidl shopper, I think JJ post was both brilliant & hilarious 🙂
