German supermarkets

To say that the food is inferior in Aldi and Lidl seems to fly in the face of the truth. A couple weeks ago a food recall was made which included Aldi and all the “best” supermarkets. You just don’t know if the two you mention are just charging you more for the same item that Aldi provide.

Rewe, probably their equivalent of Waitrose but we prefer Lidl & Aldi.:giggle:
Same for us. Rita really likes Rewe, but it's usually Aldi or Lidl.
Globus at Zell was our first time in one of those. We were really impressed, and even more that we could do our laundry in the coin washers round the back, whilst we had breakfast in their Cafeteria. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. 🙂

Their Brie de Meux is the best around. This is my favourite shopping bag. I take it with me on my increasingly rare visits to Tesco's just to annoy them...

Rewe may be more expensive, but there is a better choice and less of a bun-fight.
Rewe is not as common as Lidl (deliberate pun) however.
Lidl croissants are remarkably good value but steer clear of the junk in the middle.

The Germans are savvy buyers.... markets do good food but for every day stuff Aldi and lidl is as good as your going to get...

Who said the food was inferior?

its the shopping experience that I hate in the cheap shops. No room to move around or SD, the lack of range of products, the fact my shopping is thrown by the miserable looking cheque out person

Ka de we in Berlin, department store, I've never seen so many floors or a store so vast.
You need a mortgage to buy a bun though.

We went to the toy section for something for the grandkids, there was a lovely Barbie table football reduced to 20000 euros, yes twenty thousand. I still have the photo somewhere.
Yes been there. Fantastic place.

Lidl & Aldi have improved enormously over the last few years. Stores are bigger brighter good size isles, food range improved and they open more checkouts when busy.

And what's not to like about the super fast scanning at the checkout. They must use better scanning equipment, try scanning that fast at Tesco or Sainsburys and the machine would constantly give error beeps.

They seem to recognise that check-out is the pinch-point (and where the money comes from).
You're expected to do the packing away from the till so that they can deal with the next customer.
Who likes queuing?

i like the French supermarkets. Plenty of room, plenty of choice, loads of checkouts, baker, fish monger, butcher, deli. Loads of fresh stuff. Far better in my opinion.

You are a shop snob. I cannot see how you can comment about the quality of products which you have never bought or tried.

Aldi and Lidl offer some quality products. Just look at independent blind taste tests carried out by Which, where many of there products score more highly that the more expensive ones in the other supermarkets, including your beloved Waitrose and M&S.

There is much less choice of products in them than the average supermarket, but the same comment applies to M&S. But who cares if there is only 2 varieties of lasagne if the quality of both is OK?

Our Aldi has wider aisles than any other supermarket in the area, including M&S and the nearest Waitrose, which have very cramped aisles in comparison. Mind you that may be because Aldi is in the Royal Borough of Tunbridge Wells!! After all, we mustn't let our standards down.

Finally both Aldi and Lidl are the only stores I know that you can go into for a few groceries and come out with a set of skis, a cordless drill, a pair of looky likey crocs and a slow cooker.

PS We used to shop in M&S and Aldi for most of groceries. Since lockdown we have just been getting stuff delivered by Sainsburys. We hope to soon be able to get back to our two favourite shops.

Whoo Whooo there. Calm down.

How many times do I have to say this.

I AM NOT COMMENTING ON THE QUALITY.

is that understood? Shall I say it again?

I hate the experience the small poky little shops, all the random crap showed in shoddy baskets, the lack of range and lack of butcher, baker, etc

i am also talking about IN GERMANY, not in the uk

Yes I am a shop snob, as stated at the start of this post.

I hate shopping with a passion, so IF I have to go, I want it nice. I’m on holiday and we are shopping for two people for a couple of days that is it

i have shopped in Lidl and Aldi, and then cooked, eaten, and drunk their products. That’s how I know I don’t like the EXPERIENCE of shopping there. For instance I can’t ask for a certain cut of meat, or request a size of steak/joint.

Yes UK Aldi and Lidl are big, but from what I’ve noticed not the ones in GERMANY. Which is what the post is about, as it states at the start.

Wow. Some of you men are very passionate about your shopping

It was only basic, light hearted question. 🙄

Next people will be telling me Weatherspoons is a good pub 😂😂😂

quick question about Germany.

Where do you lot go shopping?

Im clearly a shop snob. At home we go to Waitrose, or M&S. I may be dragged in Sainsbury’s but I am likely to have a tantrum there.

But in Germany we both really struggle. We absolutely HATE Lidl and Aldi. They are like some weird sort of boot sale come trade Cash & Carry.

What is Germany’s decent supermarket?

In France we are good plenty of big supermarkets to pick from and stay away from the two crappy German ones. Easy.

Ps I’m not interested in people telling me how good Aldi and Lidl are, they aren’t they are discount shops, full of odd products and zero room to move round.
Kaufland or Rewe are both good supermarkets similar to a Sainsbury’s etc

Another vote for Rewe and Kaufland - but when we go back into France from Germany we find ourselves skipping round a Carrefour or Leclerc with joy.

You do your own shopping? Yuk.

We shop in most stores in DE, but, prefer Real or Rewe if any in the area. Just go in after 7pm and have the shop almost to yourself. In Real you get great choice and a lot of things under one roof.

If you find Aldi and Lidl a bit of a squeeze then the bigger shops as mentioned earlier such as Globus, HIT, Edeka are generally better organised, especially the newer stores. When we lived in Cologne we would bulk shop at Globus and then fill in the odd bits with local Lidl. Globus was definitely a big store, separate drinks sections for bulk buys, plastic and glass recycle centre with discount voucher, several cafeteria options and Wurst in einem Brötchen for 1 euro! Where else do you get a sausage in a bun for a quid?

Kaufland is a sister company of Lidls. We prefer either Edeka or REWE, Globus is supposed to be very good in the areas' where you can find them but no personal experience.
