GBP/Euro at 1.20. Anyone buying early?

Good afternoon,

How do you prove that you have 120 euros per day for the duration of the trip to enter France which is supposed to be one of the rules as a third country or has the eu abandoned that rule ?

Where are you buying €?

I’m an airline pilot and we all carry Revolut cards. You can exchange currency in the app instantly and the card always pulls payments you make in the local currency you are in with no fees etc. I don’t think you will find a flight deck without one of these cards these days

Anyway they offer a £60 referral for friends. If anyone uses my link I’ll split it with you £30 each.

You have to set up the account and make a deposit from your bank and then 3 separate transactions of £5 or more. Then I get £60.

So if you did that and spent £15 you get £30 back.

All legit, you can also pull out £400/€400 a month in cash from ATM’s fee free on the basic free account. I use it as my regular card in the U.K. Europe and the US and just top it up from my Halifax account as I need.

Oh. It has to be done within 6 days to get the referral fee
Only card I use now after getting it to purchase my new van from Germany.

Starling uses Mastercard rate which is currently €1.19 to the GBP. This applies for cash withdrawals and card payments. This means the lovely 2 course French lunch myself and Russell's mum had, with a bottle of Sanpelligrino and a carafe of moithwatering Chardonnay, with 2 espressos to finish with was not only delicious but was well under 40 quid!!!!! Couldn't eat it all either. Happy days.

I use my Nationwide Flexplus account (which includes travel and Euro and UK recovery) and Halifax card. Both are free for European use and I find that when I use them and pay in local currency I get a good rate.

Buying a new van at the moment as the price is right.

We airline pilots are all tight, with things like Revolut cards up our arses - even when not on a CAT III approach in 100m visibility.

The euro / sterling rate has been pretty static recently and certainly not impacted on a major way over the recent developments in Ukraine.

We were getting 1.19 last November.

The difference between 1.19 and 1.20 on £500 of Euros is £4.16. Hardly worth getting all "Wolf of Wall Street" over!

Got to watch the trend lines and get your Fibonacci levels right, then you can get a bit more out of it! It’s a bit of fun, even if you only make a nice dinner or a few free nights out of it. Very good rates and zero charges if you work it out right.
PS Some toll booths don’t like Revolut though.

I've had emails like this that automatically go to junk!

I looked at Revolut a few weeks ago - drawn by the 'extras'. However, the 'Russian' connection didn't sit well with me so I decided to stay with Wise. They've served me well over a good few years and just converted £500 tonight at 1.2057.

I just use cash, cant be arsed with all the faffing about that you’re all talking about,👍

I'd guess it's the last year or so you can do that.

I can count on one hand my visits to the ATM to get cash in the last two years.
Even pre-pandemic the amount of cash was reducing month by month.
I'd presume that at some point in the next few years, like most other people, I'll stop using cash altogether

I don’t use ATMs, I bring it with me, not that I intend to go overseas too much anymore, so doesn’t really matter

Our income is in £, most of our expenditure is in € so I am permanently watching the exchange rate and converting small(£200) amounts using Revolut.
Some of this is used for cash and some transferred to our Portuguese bank account within the limits for the free version of Revolut.
We also have a Nationwide credit card that gives good rates when we need more euro spending than Revolut allows.
This has worked well for the last few years but I am always looking to see what other options are available.

Starling also offer a euro account so you can tx into it at todays exchange rate.

We’ve found Wise give the best rate. Got 1.20 yesterday and extremely quick transfer

I've used Wise (formerly TransferWise) for about 5 years now. I like the fact that I can buy Euros and other currencies when the rate is good and you get the real market rate. If I bought £1000 in Euros right now I would get a rate of 1.20715. I'd be charged £2.90. If I then want to change that to say, Croatian Kunar the app has a 'convert' button and I just change it. It seems to revolve around the fact with a Wise card you have an actual Euro bank account. I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I also have a FairFX card which i now seldom use as the rates are poor in comparison to Wise and I've found FairFX to be unreliable on occasion.

I get a much better exchange rate on my Credit Card than buying Euro, so just use card

The problem I've found with a credit card is you pay the exchange rate at the time you use it which fluctuates hourly/daily etc. Also most credit cards charge a fee each time you use them. How much do they charge you to use your credit card in Europe? I'm interested in the comparisons, I always like a good deal!

No charges , just the current exchange rate Santander Zero card

Thanks. Strangely enough I've just realised I have Sanatander card! I got when when they were giving away £40 Amazon vouchers and have never used it. I suppose it might come in handy when the rate goes above what I've paid for my Euros with Wise. Whats the situation with getting cash out?
