France from Start to Now and Beyond

Thanks for posting about your travels and including so many photos. I love reading about other people's trips. Gives me inspiration (y).
Glad you're enjoying yourself :).

Look out cowboy, He's behind you!!
I was wondering who and when someone would comment on “me and my shadow” as the song goes flanagan and allen I think we’re the artists lol. Best Wishes Tony

14th Hi Playmates well I had a problem looking for LPG the first site I visited was out of LPG, the second on the FindLPG app only sold bottles of gas. The last one I visited I was happy to find they had some.
With this taking so long the evening was drawing in so I headed back to Parking En Riba-Roia Del Túria cc47891 for the night.

15th I headed in the direction of Alicante as evening was approaching I headed for an Aire in Jalance cc6512 there was a UK MH on the site as I arrived who introduced themselves to me the next morning Pam and Paul they were very nice people and we had lunch on the concrete tables and benches. There isn’t much round here apart from a castle on a hill and no way was I going to walk up there but it made for a pleasant change from talking to myself, but I stayed the next night.

The two plums of smoke you can see on the second to last picture is from a Nuclear Power Plant.

16th left the Aire and headed nearer to Alicante I stopped at the next Aire Ayora cc47680 as I thought you might like to see a picture of it and also there was a public weighbridge which was two euros so I thought I would give it a go and see how near the mark I was. To my surprise it came in at 4660kg without me in the cab which would add another conservative 100kg to the total with full water 3 quarters fuel.
12.jpg

22.jpg

32.jpg

Now I’m not sure how accurate this weighbridge was but I’m sure it can’t be that far out.

Onward towards Alicante headed to a Aire in Castalla cc40846 which was 3€ which included EHU, can’t be bad I arrived late at night and squeezed into a space and went to bed as you have to pay at the sports centre behind the Aire and it was closed.

17th woke up to find there was two uk registered MH one was an elderly couple and the other one was a couple of men with a dog. Now I’m not a homophobic but find it a bit difficult when talking to two men who might be partners or just friends. In the end I started to refer to his partner as his friend until I found their names out Mike and Harry. They were very nice people “the two men that is” the older couple wanted to keep themselves to themselves.

Spent a pleasant evening, chatting with a few beers to the Mike and Harry on the benches opposite the Aire.

18th The Mike and Harry and the older couple left today and I woke up feeling ok but latter in the day started feeling terrible, looks like I have a cold lucky I’ve had my flu jab so hopefully it shouldn’t last too long, As Mike and Harry left there was a few other foreigners came which immediately started camping I did take a picture this morning but had to be discreet, they had table and chairs out and was having a meal round it. Anyway typing this in bed as my nose is running and my muscles are aching like mad so I’m stopping in bed till I feel better.

I’ve booked till Tuesday so I won’t have to worry about gas running out and the loo is empty and I have full water so I can fester in bed without worrying, I only wish I was at a beach location as the outlook here is not that brilliant. There is a market Tuesday so if I’m up to it I would like to take a look round it before I leave.
Best Wishes Tony

Good to hear you're happy on your travels, better than being stuck in bleeding millbrook anyway ! We've stayed at Tereul by the little bullring, by the recovery depot so woken up a few times during the night! We were running down to Santa pola where we used to have a flat. Alicante , la marina, guardamar, plenty of places to park cheap or free. Up the saints 2 1 Everton. Good market at Santa pola and some dodgy bars in the town....

Loving reading about your travels Tony
Hope you are feeling better very soon.
Safe travels to your next destination.

Enjoying your travels, hope you're cold goes quickly, lovely photos.

Hope your cold or virus is better now Tony and that you are on the road again.:)

Do remember to check your emails or login online for your return Brittany Ferries crossing. Some of their times have been changed due to government requirements for extra ferry backup.

Hi @Riverbankannie Yes thanks I’m a lot better now just the remnants of a cough, I hope that’s the end of it. I came across as you know from Portsmouth to St Marlo lol . I’ve booked to come back Santander to Portsmouth, I would of thought they would inform me if they change my sailing times, but your right, I will check and also keep an eye on them just in case they don’t inform me.
Best Wishes Tony

Great write up and images, and sufficiently filled my lunch hour thank you... As I look outside, I definitely feel like I want to get up and venture..... the view of a miserable and rainy day in Dover! Castle hiding in the fog.
Safe travels. Enjoy.

Hi Everyone I left the Aire in Castalla cc40846 and trundled on my way to the next port of call which was L’olleria, L’olleria cc26081 “No that’s not me stammering, that is the way it is listed in CC”
Anyway tried to find it as usual by the coordinations and could not find it at those coordinates.
I thought as the Aire was only a small one on the road in a residential area they might of removed it for residential parking.
The area I was stopped was cramped and uninviting so looked on cc for the nearest Aire which was Area de Bellus Bellus cc60508 “why do they have to repeat names”, from now on I’ll only type one even if they have typed two.
Following the coordinates of Aire Bellus no sooner had I started off and turned two corners that I came upon the Aire I could not find. It wasn’t far from the coordinates in cc but far enough to make yo think it’s no longer there.
Looking at the Aire it still was not for me basically parked on the road with areas which had been demolished and rubble all around.
I continue on to the Aire at Bellus, arrived and backed into a spot with a Silver Burstner behind me with their Reg plate the first part the same as mine WA08.

2.jpg

I went and introduced myself to them and asked what was the deal at this Aire. He told me you had to pay two euros at the town hall, but when he went to do it they didn’t want to know.
Shaun and Hannah was in the Burstner elegance, he was over here with his wife and two kids and two cats from September to September as he is a joiner and painter and decorator he was doing jobs for the locals to help pay his way. Apparently there is websites that the locals ask for people to do certain jobs and then they get paid with meals EHU etc.

I settled in and sorted myself out for the day.

24th There is a dam wall right behind the Aire and I decided to take a walk up to the dam to admire the views. I walked all along the dam and was hoping to come down the other end and back to the Aire that way, but unfortunately there was a river at that end and I could not see a bridge to cross back to the Aire, so I started walking back from whence I came.

5.jpg

6.jpg

8.jpg

10.jpg

12.jpg

14.jpg

On my way back I saw a tag axle Autotrail Motorhome parking in front of me and when I got back noticed their first part of their registration was the same as mine and the Burstner, WA08 how spooky is that.
I welcomed them to the campsite, they were from Manchester Chris and Jeanette.

17.jpg

25th Today Shaun and Hannah and crew left today. I decided to go for a walk where Shaun went yesterday it’s a walk down the bottom of the dam and as Shaun ad informed me you could follow the track all the way round and end up at the village then back to the Aire. Not sure how far I got round but was cream crackered and not knowing how far this wide rough lane went decided to cu across to the Village I could see on my left. I cut across allotments to get to the village, there is a butchers there and a small shop selling bread etc.
Now I could not see a way back to the Aire so I tried to ask a young lady, another woman walking past with her dog understood where I wanted to go and led me back to the Aire.

18.jpg

19.jpg

20.jpg

21.jpg

On the way back we passed a Club of some sorts. There were lots of blue boxes on white pedestals and brightly coloured birds flying around.
I later found out that these were pigeons which they paint for one reason or another, how strange is that? I did try to get some pics but was not very successful.

23.jpg

32.JPG

25.jpg

24.jpg

Going back to this track just to inform you this is not a very interesting walk as the reeds and rushes are so high there is little else to see, and only get a glimpse of the river now and then.

26th Got my bike off my MH and when round the track again just to see how much further on I would of had to walk, I would of had to walk quite a bit further, I’m glad I cut across the allotments yesterday.

Spent the rest of the weekend chilling out with Chris and Jeanette.
On Saturday a young chap came round collecting the money 2€ per night, very reasonable I quite like this Aire it’s got all you could want and even though the dam is right behind you with a road on the top the noise is not intrusive at all and very little traffic at night.

Hi Tony
I think you will find it is a way of saying the aire name and then the place name so Area de Bellús at Bellus.
The pigeons with dyed feathers are common around Spain. They are not racing pigeons but the members of the club have males with they have in individual boxes. The group then let out quite a few females and then some males. The game is to see which male spends the most time with a female! Most of the time the club members can be seen peering in amongst the bushes to determine the winner.

Hi All my fans “I use that word lightly” Just to bring you up to date and let you know im still breathing.

29th I left Bellus cc60508 just after 1:00 Spanish time after getting my daily dose of B - - - it on BBC 2 just to wind me up for the day, headed for Alcov To hopefully top up my LPG, not that I was low I just like to top up when near a station which hopefully has it.

Luckily Repsol Cred Tirant Lo Blanch at Alcov did have some.

I noticed an Aire very near in Alcov Parking Plaza Al Azraq cc71313 so I headed for that one to get my bearings and hopefully top up my supplies.

This so called Aire is nothing more than a piece of land which is hard standing but it’s that white stuff you find all around Spain, for some reason it has a steam train perched at the front of the parking area, no doubt reminiscent of their industrial past.

8.jpg

9.jpg

Anyway looking on my trusty iPad there was a Aldi just up the street so went to there to top up supplies.

Now I don’t know if I broke any laws but the area was a designated environmental zone whatever that means as far as my vehicle goes.

There were other MH in the car park not as big as mine but I think they were older, and if they were ok to park here then I hope I was ok as well.

I was not going to stay here for the night so I picked the next Aire on the direction of my travels, which was Area De Lbi cc 10715 the area is enclosed by trees and hard standing on white gravel. No services as such but a water tap, i’m not sure if it was working.

There is a nice park next to this Aire in the picture you can see grass in the right hand corner, it is Astroturf not real grass.

There is also a school near bye as playtime is very loud.

There is a Mercadona 5 blocks away and another called Kuups Supermercados which I’ve never heard of before. Other than that there is no reason to stay, so today I’m looking for my next station. Apparently there is two attractions here a museum and I cant remember what the other one Chris told me about.

Today I headed for Castalla where I spent my recovery days, to empty the you know what, and top up the water. I then headed for the coast which as some of you know I love being near the sea. The Aire in question is Parking Carabassi, Monte Faro cc63462 which is a large open space gravel based on the coast with no amenities there except for rubbish bins.

Im planning to be here for about 5 days relaxing in hopefully the sun.

2nd February Had a short trip along the road which runs close to the beach, the beach here is fairly rocky with occasional breaks of dark blackish sand, and if my memory serves me correctly it is black because its volcano lava residue.

3rd Decided to go further along the road to see what if anything is down there as quite a few vehicles head that way.
Along this road is a few typical Spanish poorly built houses and if you look out to sea there is what I call Spains answer to Alcatraz.

LOL

As some of you might know I have a very expensive electric mountain bike which I like to keep safe, it’s way over the top for me but at the time it was going at a price I could not refuse. Please keep this to yourselves as I don’t want my x to find out or she might open the divorce proceedings again.
Here is a picture of my bike with the small chain I use to secure it.

This is about 2 kilometres down the road some of the apartments are still being built as most of Spain, but it seems a nice complex anyway.
16.jpg

There is an area here built for kids, so obviously they want families to come here, but I don’t think Id want my kids swimming in front of these apartments with the rocky beach as it is.

This picture is near the end of the complex and Looks like some intrepid MHers have found a secluded car park just for themselves. Notice the poor guy trying to paint the white lines in this park.

I've decided its time to vacate this idyllic area and go onto my next destination, no really the bog is nearly full. LOL
I decided to head for an Aire behind a Repsol garage which is 8 Euros a night for EHU etc and its also near to the centre and supermarkets. When I arrived I was less than impressed so I moved on to Playa de San Juan, Alicante 13 Euros a night cc59515.
This is what looks like a fairly new Aire, there is room for 40 MHs and hard standing.

The check in can be a bit tedious, you need your passport or driving licence and your vehicle details, name and country of residence, having said that its a really nice Aire not far from the beach, nice hot showers, 2.2 Euros for water. There is a railway line which runs by the Aire but not many trains if any overnight.

we stayeed there last year if you walk out the gate turn right walk down a few blocks then turn right again theres a big complex with bars and resturants and shops from the main drag you dont realise its there and much cheaper than the front bars

We stayed on that Aire last October. We really liked it, as it was so close to the beach and bars/restaurants. The guy who runs it is so helpful and pleasant. We liked it so much that we went back for another few days.

The track that passes by is actually the tram track which goes from Benidorm into Alicante. There is a tram stop close to the aire and it's well worth having a trip into Alicante.

Hottentot figs I think @DBK called them .
I've loads . water based ice plant that once established, runs rampant & needs cutting back & disposing regularly. Weighs quite a bit if you have left it too long. Comes in red & yellow as well.

I have called this plant Hottontot Fig in the past but I was wrong! I think it is the Sea Fig (Carpobrotus chilensis) a close relative. The difference is in the size and colour of the flowers. Hottontot File (aka Ice Plant) has large yellow or pink flowers. Sea Fig has smaller magenta coloured flowers. The leaves are a laxative if you eat enough of them. :) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpobrotus_chilensis

Hottontot Fig is described here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpobrotus_edulis

What I want to know is what is wrong with this country, they sell loads of great strawberries but can I find any fresh cream, no is the answer. I just can’t understand it. I think they sell spray cream but that’s not what I want.
Perhaps it’s call it something different and I’ve yet to work it out.
Any help?

Nata, you've probably worked that one out, the best that I have found is pasteurised in cartons, there seems to be two different types but I don't know which is which.

You can get it, look for "nata".

Hi Everybody I left Alicante and headed inland as I thought that further away from the coast there would be less MHs and I’d been at the coast for a while, although I’ll probably go back there later.
I headed for an Aire in Murcia Service Ikea cc61190. I arrived at about 5:00 and what a surprise the whole place was absolutely full, I had to park up on the adjacent parking areas meant for cars, but I was not alone by the evening I was one of 8 MHs parked in that area.
This Aire is meant to hold 50 MHs, during the evening I went and did a count of how many were actually there. I counted 84 and where I was parked 8 totalling 92, see my school days weren’t waisted lol.
This is a large shopping complex. In the morning a few left and I managed to find myself a spot in the Aire once settled in I decided to stay for the weekend as it will give me time to explore the shopping centre and top up my supplies.

11th I left for an Aire not to far away Area Municipal De Lorqui cc20985, there is a market on Monday so you can’t enter the Aire between 7:30 and 15:00, I arrived at 14:15 and most of the marketeers had gone and the only ones which were left were packing away and clearing up.
Although there are trees down most of one side of the Aire it did not seem to impede much on what the solar panels were pushing out, although where I’ve parked the tree branches stop me from operating my satellite dish.

This Aire is a nice place with a café at one end and a large park behind the Aire there is the usual graffiti plastered all around the place and orange trees in the centre of the park.
And strangely enough the orange trees in the park still have oranges on them, they would not have stayed on there in the UK

There is a paddling pool which at this time of year is empty.

After the first night I moved further into the Aire so I could open my satellite dish.
There is also an skateboard arena at the far end.

If you walk up the steps at the end of the area you come to a path come road which runs alongside a river.
12th I took a walk along the river not really a lot to see but pleasant anyway.

As I’ve said this is a nice area but in CC one review talked about not parking adjacent to the house as dogs bark constantly.
Another person talked about some youngsters practicing their trumpets till very late in the evening, which I experienced last night, it lasted about an hour and a half.
What the reviews did not mention was that local youth throw these oranges at your van.
Also today there was two youths walk past me into where the other youths practice their trumpets and for no reason started kicking hell out of this metal park seat.

13th I took a walk into the village there is a town hall which I assume most villages have a nice church across from the town hall is a small shop run by Chinese people.

14th There is an outdoor museum which I decided I was going to go to, a large water feature with a large water wheel, not much to see but it made for a pleasant afternoon walk.

After the second night I decided to go down to the café in the evening and have a few beers, I practised my Spanish cerveza por favor over and over which google translate said it was Beer please, now having repeated it three times to the barman and him looking at me as though I was from another planet I reverted back to English which he seemed to understand.

After my second beer the barman gave me a plate of small potatoes with some strong garlic dip on the side, I did not ask for that it seems it is something that they just do.

I went back over the next few nights and I built up a kind of friendship with the lady her young daughter and the barman even though the conversation was very limited to say the least. Each night they treated me to different nibbles one which was sugared almonds I think with thin hard as rock sausage which It took me all evening to chew but as they had been good enough to give it to me I felt obligated to eat it.

16th I’m now heading back towards Alicante and to the sea not sure where I’ll end up.
Best Wishes Tony

What I want to know is what is wrong with this country, they sell loads of great strawberries but can I find any fresh cream, no is the answer. I just can’t understand it. I think they sell spray cream but that’s not what I want.
Perhaps it’s call it something different and I’ve yet to work it out.
Any help?
Best Wishes Tony
As others have said "Nata" is what you need.

They would, They are Seville oranges ,inedible & used only for street decorations & making marmalade. They usually fall off everywhere you see them.
