France from Start to Now and Beyond

Hi Everyone
16th February Well I left Loqui and headed for the sea on the way I stopped off at the Ikea Aire to top up with goodies.

17th Ghol San Fulgencio cc48406
This seems more of an industrial area which is still being developed. There is a small camping area which is fenced in, with a laundromat facility just outside it and a fuel station on the other flank of the camp.
The camp has a guide price of 7 Euros dependent on length of vehicle but as I got there in the afternoon the site was full, as there was a laundromat outside I thought I would get some washing done the next day.

With no room at the inn as they say, I parked in the road around the corner from a Lidl’s as quite a few others were doing as well.
As well as Lidl there is a Mercadona and a market on Saturday so I’m told.
If you top up your fuel here then be aware that the options for filling your tank are not like one would expect. From what I remember there is 4 options, they are, 20 euros 30, 50 or total fill up.
If you select total fill up it will take 150 euros from your card and if you do not use that amount then the rest will be returned to your card in Euro’s. This is what the attendant told me. I just used the 50 euros selection. What a strange way of doing that.

18th Parking punts del Saralet Torrevieja cc 62540 uneven and rough terrain rocky beaches near to restaurants got here late so stayed just two nights, no services here.

19th Not much here so headed onward to an Aire at Benissa cc 63169
Quite a reasonable location with a grass patch alongside where you park which was great for relaxing on in the sun.
1.jpg

4.jpg

The service area is ok but could do with being a bit larger I had trouble draining my grey waste.

5.jpg

There is a Lidl just around the corner so no problem with food supplies, and also as I understand it an Iceland which I did not find.

20th Had a walk into the centre, for me it was quite a trek but then again for someone else who is a reasonably fit person for a 66 years old probably would think nothing of it.
The Centre was ok I found the church which for some reason or another it was closed and a nice shaded park.

There is also an arch which I never did find but did find this large pipe, not the most artistic thing around.

8.jpg

23rd Stayed there another two days then headed towards Xàbia cc63298 Parking Platja de l’Arenal, Platja.

On the way to the Aire stopped at a Repsol garage which is about 1 mile away from the Aire, I found the so called Aire, just a patch of hard ground alongside a disused go cart track and 40ft trailers.
I settled in and in the morning sitting out in the morning sun was approached by a guy who called himself Nomad Nick who sells matchbox toys and dinky toys, and every day he would come and shoot the breeze and do the rounds with all who we’re English which was nice.
He ate everyday at Scollops a restaurant which was close by, apparently he’d been coming here for quite a few years.

2.jpg

3.jpg

26th walked down to the beach, this is my idea of a seaside resort as you can see from the pictures.
I was hoping to stay as long as I could but with no facilities that would determine the length of stay, or so I thought.

1.jpg

2.jpg

3.jpg

4.jpg

6.jpg

Just behind the Aire is a Supermarket Masymas
they sell water in 8 litre bottles at just under 1 Euro which is cheap so that will supply my water, and would you believe it they sell ginger nut biscuits which I bought 10 packets and frozen Puka pies so food supplies sorted, gas just about 1 mile away, just had the black and grey waste.

21.jpg

I thought grey waste could be drained into a bucket and tipped down the rain water drain each day, so I’m down to the black waste to try to make the cassette last as long as possible.
Every morning I would walk to the Supermarket and use their WC facilities, by the way if you do it, take some toilet tissue with you, I didn’t the second time and ended up doing the tight skirt two step back to my MH, if you get my drift Lol.

There is a Fish and chip shop in the resort with an English speaking proprietor, quite nicely fresh cooked fish but the chips were not cooked with the best potatoes, for your information you should use Maris Piper to get the best chips.
Some of the shops on the sea front were still closed but that was understandable with it being the end of February.

While I was there I went and got my ears lowered and hair wash at a local hairdresser 15 euros. There is also a laundromat which does service washes so I availed myself of their services which I found reasonable for the amount of laundry I gave them to wash 30 euros.
They are also English which made life a bit easier.

22.jpg

This is only part of the washing they did for me

There are also quite a few ATM’s around should you need local cash.
I ended up managing to stay here until the 14th of March this was due to earlier hearing in the early hours noises coming from behind my vehicle, worried about my bike being tampered with, I quickly got up to investigate, finding some French people had lifted the heavy sewer drain cover and was emptying their cassette into it so with their help I did the same although I did feel a bit naughty.

Vuurtoren Javea, Xàbia. Cc63249
15th This site is at the top of a hill or mountain whatever you want to call it and it is close to the lighthouse so you can imagine the sort of views that you get when there. A picture can never do justice to these views but here is a few for you.

Stayed here for two nights, it was wonderful waking up to such views.

Enjoying your first foreign trip then.
Yes Lenny I am, I only wish I could of done this when I was younger and fitter. That aside I will definitely do this until I’m 70 another three years then I will probably have to downsize which will p*ss me off.

Hi Tony.
I've only just dipped back in to your posts since following your (understandable) newbie pre-departure questions/anxieties back in December. My! What a long way you've come, both in distance and experiences. Jolly well done!
Nothing to do with your posts which are interesting, practical and informative......but........
I've toured Europe a lot but never Spain except on a motorbike with pals in non-winter months and have been toying with spending winter in Southern Spain. However, I'm also a solo traveller and although I don't particularly 'need' the entertainment or company of others your last couple of weeks' photos have rather put me off. The aires seem to be barren, dusty, industrial, out-of-the-way and/or scrub/wasteland. The beach ones have reasonable views but there's a limit to how long I can look at sand and waves. Also, in many of the town/street photos there's hardly anyone around.
I'm having second thoughts now but that's no reflection whatsoever with regard to the tales of your unforgettable adventure.

@Spriddler Hi There
Not sure what to say except, each to his own. The way I’ve done this trip is obviously the way I wanted to, keeping costs down wherever possible. There is others who go to fully fledged camp sites and head for the main towns and cities eat in restaurant most days. I’m sure someone on here can guide you to the type of trip you would enjoy in Spain.
I would hate you to give up on Spain based on my travels.
I must admit I find it hard to get into the Spanish way of life, I tend to be wandering around the towns when most shops are shut for their siesta so there is a lack of people about.
Just out of interest what are you looking for on a journey?
Best Wishes Tony

With what I take I doubt if a 3.5 ton MH would carry all my stuff. Apart from that I have spent quite a bit getting this MH with the equipment I want on my travels. I can’t see me going through that again as the cost would be out of my reach.
I know I won’t get back most of the money I put into this MH so I can’t see me affording another unless I won the lottery, I won’t hold my breath on that one. Best Wishes Tony

Hi Spriddler perhaps it might give you a better idea of Spain if you read other people’s Europe trips perhaps their trips are more of what you are expecting.

Well, I'd certainly enjoy the warmth since the older I get the more I feel the cold/damp days of a U.K. 'winter' which is how most winters seem to have become.
I mostly seek out/follow rivers (Rhine, Rhone, Gironde, Loire etc), architectural buildings and sites of historic/medieval/pre-historic interest or activity, leafy natural national parcs, local markets, food and culture (I like to chat with locals/guides/shopkeepers etc). I guess I'm also a bit biased against Spain because I speak very little Spanish but near fluent German and French, having lived and worked in 5 'Old' Europe countries during a 14 year period. Whilst on one tour I was talked into being a guide at the chateau at Chinon for 6 weeks for German and English tourists during a busy holiday period and which I really enjoyed.
I guess the rather barren dry nature of Southern Spain is unsurprising and inevitable in view of the temperate winter weather.
I have to admit though that temps around 20 degrees and a bit of reliable sun and blue sky here in Sussex would be nice.

It doesn't have to cost the earth to travel..Our van is only 5.2 mtrs but without any gear inside we carry 2 cycles,2 Lafuma Reclining Chairs,Revolving cloths line,BBQ, and an outside table to cook on..Inside plenty of storage for tools, clothing and food.Good kitchen(proper cooker, oven and drainboard) toilet, shower and two long sofas which make two good beds..BUSBY.

@Spriddler What you want I think is definitely what Spain can supply, one comes to mind Valencia which I was encouraged to go to but didn’t. I’m really here for the warmth and from what people have said this winter has been the best for a long time, there is loads of historical places round Spain if that is what you want, but I’m afraid you are stuck with the ground unless you use dedicated campsites or I assume that the paid Aires might have better hard standing. As far as speaking to people I’m language dumb so sign language is all I can do and that is not proper sign language LOL. If you are on Facebook look up Pauline Steel Ford which I met her and her hubby Bill over the new year. Look down her time line I think they are doing more in line with what would interest you.
Best Wishes Tony

Tony, don’t worry about the 70 bit.
As long as you are reasonably fit ie. you can walk, talk and breath, you should have no trouble with the medical side of extending your C1 licence.
Aged almost 70 I ordered a new and rather expensive A class at 4500kg on the basis that I would be fit enough. Thank goodness I was and continue to be.

Richard.

Hi Clarke unfortunately I’m not in good health, until recently I had a class one licence which I struggled to get, they only allowed me a one year extension when I had a cardiac profusion scan because I failed the exercise test or should I say the test was stopped because of the readings they were getting. My c1 licence runs out February 23 and although my doctor will help me with this, my previous history with my heart will possibly stop them from issuing a c1 licence to me.
I obviously will deal with this as and when it rears it’s ugly head but the way things are going with the law I’m not that hopeful. But you never know I might still be driving my 5 tone MH until I die, but hopefully when I stationary. LOL
Best Wishes Tony

@Spriddler try having a look at North West Spain, the area called Galicia, it is much greener, there are mountains national parks and some very historic towns and it is very Celtic, kind of like a Spanish version of Ireland. :)

Sorry to hear that Tony.
I don’t know if the medical requirements are the same for C1 but suspect that they probably are. I’m sure you doctor will give you his best advice at the time.
Best of luck when the time comes for the medical, you never know, after your laid back lifestyle of the last few months you might sail through. (y):D

I understand that the medical criteria are the same both licences.

Sorry that is not what you would like to hear.

Ta. I've toured the N. West of Spain and across to Andorra 'shopping centre' by motorbike several times (fabulous mountain twisties  ) but I'd rather be down South for winter warmth.

Thanks Tony, I appreciate your comments but I don't have the time to use F/B. I tried it briefly but there's too much dross. E.g. photos of 'All you can eat Sunday carveries for £3.99' or gurning 3 yr olds covered in ice cream and posing youngsters trying to live up to their F/B image.
Yes, I'm too cynical and I'm sure it has its place but I can't be doin' with it.

@Spriddler I totally agree with you about Facebook, I just use it to see what my kids and grandkids have been doing as I rarely ever get to see them in person.

I can certainly understand that. My brief foray on F/B was when my son set up a closed group after my DIL was seriously ill in hosp for many weeks in order to keep her family in Australia and S. America updated. It saved him (knackered after many hours at her bedside) having to make numerous phone calls with different time zones with the same distressing conversations. It was more convenient than with emails too. All's well now thank goodness.

Hi Everybody
17th Headed for Denia not in the cc guide but I think I got it from park4night, anyway when I got there the area in question was chained off so quickly looked at cc and headed for Parking Daimus Gandia cc 73071 tapped the coordinates into the sat nave and off I went, never did find that place, comments in cc did say it was difficult to find but I thought with the coordinates what could go wrong.

Anyway after two frustrating attempts to find it and getting into some very very difficult places to get out of I gave it a miss and decided to head for Simat cc24715 arrived late afternoon and got settled in spoke to two lovely people Doreen and John which we got on well but unfortunately they we’re leaving the next day to meet some friends.

18th Had a walk round the monastery took some pics but to be honest the ones of the ceiling paintings my phone did not do them justice.

On getting back to my MH the police had placed signs around the Aire and deciphering it, it said 21 to 25 March Fair
Now I could not find out if there was going to be a fair in the village or on the Aire itself, if in the village then would we be hemmed in and have to wait till the 26th to get out. In the end I think it meant in the village itself but I decided to leave on the 20th

20th Getting less than two weeks of me sailing to the UK I decided to meander towards the north of Spain and headed to Utiel cc40008 There is a reasonable nice area which is tree lined and to one end a newly looking pink block paved area where you could park out of the tree line.

3.jpg

4.jpg

5.jpg

At the rear is a large open gravelled area where the services are located. I decided this was the area I would go as if I decided I wanted to run my generator then no one would be disturbed or able to hear it, also kids were letting off fireworks in the newly laid area so that was out of the question.

1.jpg

2.jpg

Only expected to stay for the night but all through the night there were people letting off fireworks the last lot was 4:30 am so most of the day I spent recuperating, luckily the next night was totally different and I did not hear any fireworks at all which was a surprise.
Utiel is a lot colder at night and also in the morning as it is quite a bit above sea level.

22nd woke up refreshed and learnt we are not leaving the EU on the 29th so my problems with the green card issue has gone away.
Went searching for LPG arrived at a Repsol fuel station and found the gas it had was GNC gas and a totally different set up to anything I was used to, having googled it to see if it was the same, all I could come up with was CNG, perhaps I misread the label, I wish Id taken a picture of it.

I wasn’t sure if it would be ok so went onto the next station towards Madrid.

After filling up with gas and fuel headed for Area De Castillo De Garcimuñoz Cc48213
Once parked up for the night I could do with a drink but the only tavern I found I could not get into it, the shades were down but I could see the tv was on but could not see anybody in there, so I had to make do with coffee back at the MH.
some pics of the outside of the castle but not open and no sign to say when it is.

24th I Headed towards my next port of call which was Area De Ucles cc15040.

Heading towards the village I stopped to take a picture of the Monastery which I thought looking at the pictures on CC I thought I would be parked near to it.

1.jpg

This was not going to be the case; I traveled past the turning for the Monastery and down a lane with loads of people walking the other way dressed in Sunday clothes. It was a fairly narrow lane and people were walking on both sides. Not wanting to make them move over.

I was moving to either side as I approached different batches of people. Just as Id moved over to the left a car coming the other way giving me some rude gestures as to why I was on the wrong side of the lane, not a lot I could do as there was still a load of people on the other side walking by. Going on further I notice a cemetery where these people were obviously coming from.

I arrived at the so called Aire which is at the back of an industrial building in farm land.

How this Aire got a 7.2 rating is beyond me, but probably the Monastery is the reason.
But then it does have it's own modern toilet as seen in the photo.

2.jpg

3.jpg

4.jpg

On the road climbing out of Ucles there is a patch of land where I suppose you could stop for the night, this is where I took the last picture of the Monastery.

5.jpg

Not a place I wanted to stay so onward towards Madrid Parking Valdebernardo CC19892. When I got there the car park was totally full, I thought I would have to move to the next Aire but going round the road I managed to find a slot on the road where others had parked and it was alongside a really nice park.

This Aire has everything you could wish for, well not quite there is no toilets or showers but what you do have is water, black waste, grey waste and electric, what more could you ask for 3 euros a night.

The only problem is, “if it’s a problem at all” is you have to pay the 3 euros per night by IBAN bank transfer, a 90 euro fine is levied if you leave without paying.

A warden comes round and you have to fill in a form with your details so no getting away with it and to be honest why would you not pay, cheap as chips as the saying goes.

Another NL MH went to pay the 3 euros at the Town Hall which is open from 9 till 14:00.

Nice Aire but not much here unless you like hiking etc but still is a pleasent area.
I did find on my perusal of the area that there is another unofficialsit at the top of the village.

7.jpg

Just behind this is where they store the rubbish bins.

Getting so close to me leaving Spain I'm about 240 miles from the port so this will be the last post of this trip. Ive booked in at Newbury MH show so I might see some of you good people there, could not get in MH Fun at Peterbourough so had to book in with another club.
Hope to see you all back in Blighty.

Just done a catch up as we have also been in Spain for a couple of weeks but flew to Murcia for a golfing holiday. Going back to your post about retaining C1, you may have read that it has taken me 9 months to get mine after declaring a Left Bundle Branch Block which was diagnosed 10 years ago and I don’t know how long I had it before that. I consider myself to be very fit and well managing our local golf course without problems including “heart attack Hill “ where even the battery on my push along trolley gives out.
It seems to take a long time to sort out the records and tests they want but I sailed through the exercise test.
Anyway not having my licence was the reason why we flew to Spain so if you do want to try and retain it, and you have a cardiac issue, factor in a possible long wait.

Given the sort of travelling you are doing, I would have thought a 3500kg would suit you, it’s always good to have a sort out of stuff and see what you really need to carry and you could always go for a box trailer if necessary.

Wishing you a safe trip home.

Thanks for the update. I must say though that it all looks a bit bleak/lonesome and in just the one photo is there any human life about, and then only two people sat at a picnic bench. I like a bit of peace and quiet but not feeling I'm the only one unaware of a 3 minute warning of nuclear attack. ;);)
None of my business of course but it seems to me that you have a rather large m/h for just a single traveller.
Great respect though for your achievements from such a 'cold' start (y)

Thanks for travel blog , I’ve realy enjoyed it , take care & hope your license gets sorted out

@Spriddler Yes you are right it is a big MH but I do like a lot of space and to be honest being on my own I tend to take things to entertain myself when in the MH and not only that but most of the 3.5 ton MH’s don’t seem to have much payload, the MH I have has a 1.2 ton payload which might seem a lot but with all the extras some of us put on them it soon gets eaten up.
As I’ve said before the time I go walk about is when most of the Spanish people are having their siesta so don’t judge it on my pics alone LOL.

All the same it can't be much fun playing a round of golf in there on your own.

Aha! The 'mad dogs and Englishmen' syndrome........
