France.......but where are the French?????

Is all that stuff alien to you then? You could have been describing anywhere I've lived in the UK for the past 30 years.
although we love france , id put where we live in the uk up against anywhere over there and always love to get back (y) (y) (y)

For the record I love France

But yes I have to agree Chas, I've been around the world more than a couple of times, lived over ten years away from home, in two continental European countries and in Far East, spent years on tour in motorhomes, travel is exciting but coming home is sublime. (y)

i just despair that the rest of the uk has moved on, as they think, from the old values we still have in this village , we are as close to the old french villages as you can get.

Are you French - sounds like you do not like a personal point of view
15 people, including me, have 'liked' Tigertom's comment. It's difficult to believe you actually hold that view, esp as you say you have 'spent a lot of time in France'. One might ask - why?

I've been going to France for decades - working, touring, for 5 years recently leading tours to the Western Front and Normandy battlefields [moving 1000 miles south of those battlefields meant I had to drop that] and I have never had anything but the most cordial relations with the French, professionally or socially.

I find that the French have a profound sense of their 'Frenchness' which I can imagine grates with a certain sort of Brit. The French are not prepared to compromise this sense they have - and why should they? In Britain many Scots and Welsh have the same attachment.

It's more than a crass 'nationalism'. It is a deep connection with their culture, on every level. I find that attractive and interesting. It's one of the reasons that being in France is so enjoyable.

And over a 1000 funsters read it and weren't moved to hit the like button. Just saying that without a dislike you can't prove the validity of opinion by likes here.
I agree. That was not my point. An opinion cannot be valid or invalid. It is simply the expression of someon's point of view, which they are entitled to hold, whatever the view of anyone else.

The opinion may be based on knowledge or ignorance, understanding or prejudice ...

The point I was making is that Panda's response to Tigertom was "sounds like you do not like a personal point of view ". Clearly this 'personal p.o.v.' was accepted but met with disagreement. And this disagreement has found some support.

Neither, we speak school girl/boy French although not quite sure why as the language has no value outside France, they are rude and arrogant. We have also spent a lot of time in France so not just an isolated view but based on personal experience. It would be interesting to hear other opinions.
We have always, with only the odd exception, found the French charming and helpful. We only have very limited French language skills but try using this and invariably the French always try to help and usually try their English skills on us which is a great relief. I think you reap what you sow.

Tell us about the “odd exception” that you refer to.

Just for balance of course (y)

Can’t think of an occasion but feel sure after the number of years we have been to France there must have been at least one, so in the interest of fairness felt I should cover this??

Obviously haven’t lived in the South West !!

No but I heard it got better when some left to move to France :D
Haha Sorry to say it was the least friendly place I have lived . As an example hubby pointed out to someone they had a brake light out , reply was what business it that if yours . A girl I worked with complained that the checkout girl asked if a new product she had bought was nice as obviously thought she might have bought before but it seems she is paid to checkout her goods only ! These are only 2 if many times in the 12 years I lived there that were not welcoming

Ian, If someone is offending others then report them rather than wade in. But here is his contribution to this thread can you point out where he was actually offending people?

It wasn’t me that took offence but it was abundantly clear that offence was taken. I can only guess that it was the first of quotes from Busby (and the fourth certainly doesn’t help either) that did the damage.

I was merely pointing out that posting offensive remarks followed up by ‘I didn’t mean any harm’ doesn’t really excuse the intent behind the initial remark. It’s what bullies do.

Can’t think that I had a real problem with any French people while I lived there, 8 years.
When I first arrived I rented a bungalow, newly bought car broke down day before I had to drive to Barcelona airport to get Holly. Landlady and husband were finishing off the garden and she tried to get me a hire car. When she couldn’t she offered me her car ( to drive from near Toulouse to Barcelona and back) and apologised for only having half a tank of fuel in it.
The day my OH died in a RTA neighbours came to ask if they could help. The Maire arrived to ask if she could do anything and she continued to offer help for weeks afterwards.
Neighbours helped with moving furniture in and out.
The list could go on. I found them to be very kind people and if only my daughter and grandchildren would agree to living in France, I’d go back tomorrow.

Lotlover taking offence at Busby's German Joke, when it was clearly a joke was where the bickering started. No one needed a lecture about how people suffered under the Nazi's. It was a joke. In fact, the only post reported in this whole thread was LotLovers. Please keep it lighthearted, if you find something offensive report it and or ignore it thanks.

i am always amazed when folks take offence at something on an internet forum, if its not to your taste or sense of humour just ignore it not start arguments about it:)
