Anyone know what this guy is doing? Is this part of the security gig that I heard we are providing over the course of the tournament?

I'm guessing it's refuelling support for the RAF Typhoons providing top cover for the games
If that's the case, then it had better be the Arabs paying for it and not the British taxpayer paying to protect the airspace over the Arabs wendy ball tournament.

What type of threats are they expecting? o_O

I thought I'd read somewhere it was only naval cover we were supplying. I didn't pay too much attention though to be honest.

I suspect Iranian Shahed drones and such like are pretty high on the potential threat list - Iranian coast is less than 200miles away.

Showing my ignorance here but are the Qataris and the Iranians not best of friends then? What's the beef there?

I don’t think the Qataris would be the target - it’s the other Western nations attending who present a more attractive target E.g. USA, UK citizens etc. I believe Al-Qaeda and ISIS related groups have also made threats. Seems like the Qataris have put a lot of money into enhancing security with significant assistance from other nations.

My thoughts exactly!

On Al Jazeera news this morning there are 9 RAF Typhoons based near Doha for security , now we know why the U.K. RAF tanker is circling there.

Wonder what kind of money is riding on that contract?

Al Udeid Air Base is one of two military bases southwest of Doha, Qatar, also known as Abu Nakhlah Airport. It houses the Qatar Emiri Air Force, United States Air Force, Royal Air Force, and other foreign forces.

Used for training I understand.

This Gulfstream has flown from Philadelphia in the States and has now spent some time in a holding pattern above us along with a Bombardier also flown in from the States.
Looks like it may have been bound for Luton as above us is one of the designated areas for holding Luton bound aircraft, so I would imagine that Luton is closed with the freezing fog.

My late Mother in Law was a WAAF nurse involved in bringing casualties back from Belgium at the end of WW2. They used the Anson for the walking wounded and the Dakota for stretcher cases.
