So I'm guessing that any of the drones in Ukrainian could be flown from anywhere in the world in this day and age, wonder if it's happening?
Most of the older tech battlefield drones used by Russian and Ukrainian forces are likely controlled locally, within a few miles. Kind of like an old school remote controlled plane.

Whereas the big, more modern US drones like Global Hawks and Predators are controlled via satellite from a USAF base in Nevada, except for local control for takeoff and landing. Not that there will likely be any of these in Ukrainian airspace…yet

I used to work at Kemble when I can access the site from the main road.

Worked in the ATC tower and all over the site.

One hanger had an older swept wing fighter, no idea what it was, but had a yellow to blue fade paint scheme.
Looked the biz 👍
Lightening??!

As a diversion from all the Ukraine stuff my brother sent me this screen shot today of strange goings on in the Scottish Borders, maybe some stoners looking for the new big marijuana greenhouse they've just built near Eskdalemuir ?

My Sketchograph can do that.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

NATO must have a hefty fuel bill at the moment, these flights are support air-air fuel tankers to support the fighter aircraft that are on 'patrol'
They are flying 24/7 to/from Mildenhall, and Brize Norton, and usually circle at the destination for around 4 hours each.

RAF Globemaster took off from Gibraltar not long ago. That's what I always looked out for when ever I was down in Gib. Never managed to see one taking off.

Now that would be a sight to see.

Having landed there back in 1980 in a bag of bolts for an airplane and again in 2010 it’s an “interesting” landing strip 😊

Talking of fuel bills, didn’t the piece from the refuelling tanker mention that each Typhoon had taken 24tonnes of liquid gold during the day up there? 😳😳

It's ok it's only 80p/l for the gov!
60p with a bulk discount!!🤣🤣🤣

With all these aircraft up and on the borders will they be able to see and track incoming missiles and where their coming from?

Possibly the E-3 AWACS might see something, but it's not guaranteed. Newer long range missiles are design to be "low observable"e.g. flying very low or with stealth characteristics.

NATO usually have one of these in the sky over Poland and/or Romania for the last few weeks

Interesting looking aircraft Italy have sent to the area...

It's main function is to provide intel to help keep air superiority apparently.

Popped up last week, first time I'd seen it. Looks like it fell out the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down :giggle:

The Boeing E3 Sentries are getting old, so I imagine it's a bit of a pain keeping them flying 100% at the moment and they've asked the Italian's to help out

I think the plan is to replace the E3s with E7 Wedgetails - the RAF and Aussies have already theirs and I think the US will follow suit eventually

And the larger U.K. drones controlled from RAF Waddington, Lincs.

I'm guessing the computing power needed can be fitted in a smaller airframe these days or the analysis is done remotely rater that having dozens of Intel analyists up near hostile territory??

Probably a combination of better sensors, faster processing and better network links E.g satellite. For example the newer E7 wedge tail AWACS seems to be 2/3s the size of the older E3 flying saucer AWACS. I guess it must save on fuel too not lugging that huge rotating dish around 😀

I wonder where this Blackhawk has picked up its casualties from. Could be someone needing assistance after crossing the Polish border or do you think they risk flying in to Ukraine itself?
