A L39 Albatross (1970s cheap fighter/trainer) and miscoded something (drone?) over Estonia.

Don’t think it’s the space shuttle shown in the photo 🤪

Odd Ukrainian helis just left Bacău Romania.

One shows as Ukrainian police heli, the other 2 as planes but think they’re going way too slow to be planes

Are B52’s routinely stationed in UK or have they been brought over to bolster NATO defences in the current crisis? Anyone know? I’m quite happy with it and expected them to be here but some regional news outlets in the South West suggesting they have come over especially.

Not up to date but very interesting to watch (y)

B52's have been operating out of Fairford on and off since 1991.

Yes, not permanently based here, but they do regularly rotate to Fairford.

The current 4 came over from North Dakota on 10th Feb. Apparently a regularly scheduled joint mission series, but sometimes wonder whether “regularly scheduled” is doublespeak for “someone needs some intimidation”.

Little story from NATO about their Romania day trip on Monday

USAF MC-130J Commando off Norfolk/Suffolk with balls of steel - 30ft over the sea

For those that aren’t as nerdy as me, the MC-130J is a C130 variant specialised in low level flying and clandestine operations. Used for infil/exfil/resupply of special forces and refuelling helicopters, primarily at night in contested areas.

Wow that is crazy. Doesn't look too far off shore either. Imagine standing at the coast seeing that!

Plenty USAF activity globally today including this group in Saudi.

Invalid something over Romania call sign WEASEL11.

Possibly USAF F16 ‘Wild Weasel’, traditionally armed with ‘anti radiation’ missiles and used for suppression of enemy air defences. Otherwise known as “taunting SAM launchers or radars and then blowing stuff up”.

I think this innocuous looking jet sometimes over Romania is actually the US Army prototype ARTEMIS which has been flying round the region for a while. The idea is to eventually to replace the ageing Rivet Joints and Joint Stars.

ARTEMIS stands for Airborne Reconnaissance and Target Exploitation Multi-Mission System. It’s capabilities include electronic signal collection and ground scanning radar.

Everyone seems to be out to play in the North Sea today.

  • NATO E3 AWACS looks like it’s lining up to refuel from a USAF K35R
  • US F15s
  • US F16s
  • RAF Hawks
  • RAF Typhoons
  • A few Dassault Falcons - I believe these are contract aircraft packed with kit which means they can pretend to be other aircraft eg Russian fighters
