My point was and is that 6,000 euros for an unknown 100,000kms plus second hand engine plus parts and fitting of 3,000 euros so 9,000 is to much.
Is that engine any better than a cheap ebay recon, or ebay second hand engine ?
Also from what I've read the OP should only need a top end rebuild or replacement.
If it were me, and obviously it's not me and I'm not stuck in France, I would be paying myself to have the van transported to a proper Peugeot dealer for a proper repair.
The garage where the van is now has already trebled it's repair estimate from 3,000 to 9,000 euros.
Are they "extracting the urine" from the OP as they think they have him over a barrel ?

I know it's easy for us all to give our opinions not being in that situation currently but some of these suggestions are valid and if it were me i think i would likely want to see if i could get it back to the UK and pay the cost myself. At least that way you will have the knowledge of it being sorted at a UK garage and the warranty that will be invaluable moving forward if there are any issues.
I think someone on here posted some info on private haulage companies at some point, think it might have been on the other breakdown thread but def one to look at

This is a good point as maybe not come back to the UK but at least pay for it to be transported to a main dealer who at least then you can trust.

I sometimes wonder when reading these broken down abroad threads ,if would have been better if the vehicle had been stolen or caught on fire (obviously with no one hurt)
I remember my mate crashed his bike in Ireland it was unrideable. He had it delivered to ferry port then he had to push it on the ferry himself and off the other end then arrange for it to be transported to his home. Once he got it home done all the work put a new engine in then he had to Register it on a Q plate.
I "joked" with him saying he would have been better off giving an Irish farmer a few euro and ask him to bury it in his field
