Fix or repatriate?

Erm, I am not a Bot, I am definitely human.

No need to look at my backend @Grommet.

It was actually my handle on CB radios long before Google had bots. 😊
Same for me....my username was my handle on CB radios back in the day when they were illegal.

Update. Whilst taking the engine apart the garage can't get the injectors out and so have recommended a replacement engine. The new engine has half the milage on it compared to the original and will have all new belts, oil and probably a clutch so once that's done we should be back on the road and good for quite a few miles. Looking forward to that!

Well, €6k for the engine at 104,000km, 15 hours labour plus all the other bits and bobs and tax comes to €9300, plus a bit more if they do the clutch, which I guess they will.

That sounds expensive I think it was last year another Funster had a new engine fitted for €10,000.

Also if the injectors won't come out why not just fit a new head.

My answer to that is, I hear lubrication helps reduce the pain. They have seen you coming and ripped you off big time. You could have had the van transported back to the uk and replacement used engine twice at that price. But the injectors can be removed by a specialist. Every area there is a mobile firm take a workshop in a van to the garage to remove the injectors

There's a lot of conmen in the garage trade, not just in France, everywhere

You can get a full recon engine with 12 months warranty for a little over £2,000 in the UK.
Sounds very expensive to me.

Also I'd be concerned about their work if they really can't remove injectors.
12 month warranty full recons on ebay for £2650.
They've gone up since I last looked.
No idea what they are like though but just giving you an idea of costs.

Don't forget chaps that Martyn is in France . He said earlier that his breakdown insurance wouldn’t repatriate him because could be repaired before his return date.
So he really is 'tween a rock and a hard place.
Perhaps lennys thoughts are right suggesting a chat with garage before going further, engine at 6k does sound a lot as does labour, tax and misc at 220 per hour. Perhaps they might throw in the clutch at that price??
But when all is said and done all he's got is a motorhome in bits and still stuck in france
As the Irish say "I shouldn't start from here"
It's only money,

Mike

I don't think I would trust it at that price, they must cut corners somewhere.
Possibly Lenny but I thought MartynShaw was saying the garage quoted him just a second hand engine ?
Just thought hasn't it been said that these engines don't damage the bottom end ?

That's why I made my comment about the cost of a new engine, no way would I pay 9k for a second hand engine.

Yes the other funster had a brand new engine fitted.
Didn't people say the OP's engine doesn't damage the bottom end, non interference?
So wouldn't he just need a top end rebuild/replace ?

That's basicly what I said, why not just a new head.

(y) I wouldn't trust the garage.
What's the van worth.
I'd be paying myself to have it transported to a proper garage and have it repaired properly not 9,000 euros for some unknown history second hand motor.

Have you ever tried to remove some of this type of injector you will know in doing so it destroys the injector but I take it you have already some experience in this sort of work, as the last set of injectors on our Vivaro came to £2k and that was here in the UK the Vauxhall main dealer wanted to remove the whole engine, and that was a 50,000 mile five year old van ☹️

No I haven't.
I'm saying £9000 euros for a second hand engine sounds expensive, to me anyway.
Another funster recently had a new engine in France for 10,000 didn't they ?

I agree it does sound a lot of money and your comparison of an eBay recon unit will carry a surcharge for the old unit of at least a £1,000 so on that assumption £2,600 plus £1,000 surcharge plus £ 2,000 for injectors also keep in mind it is a bare engine it can soon add up stick a bit of labour and 20% vat on that and hey presto.
Incerdently a brand new engine 3.0 genuine Iveco complete from Turkey is £7,000

Also if you have the work done in France the warranty won’t be worth a carrot as how would you be able to take it back should another problem appear??
I would get it back home and get it sorted 👍

Here in Nottingham our local garage don't mess about removing injectors themselves they have specialist come to remove them less hassle and they have all their specialist equipment and expertise. I definitely would have repatriated the vehicle using the same companies that the recovery companies use, more cost initially but the repair would be with some warranty.
