Fix or repatriate?

This is what I told my mechanic. Probably cambelt, and he said , I don't see all the needed things and why 2 camshafts... He doesn't get it. He did mine and so many other things on all my vehicles. I trust him completly.
May be there are things you didn't get as said in French... Do you mind if I tell him to call them (not sure he will have time for that) just to pake sure. Also it could make them understand they can't go silly with you.
Won't be at the computer in the 2 coming hours
I don't mind if a mechanic phones them, 2 camshafts does seem excessive if it is a SOHC engine. I don't know much about diesel engines. Thanks

SOHC engine.
Can you make this clearer please. Remember I'm French , and not familiar with all your acronyms
Edit: Will send all info to my mechanic, I hope he'll have some time to give them a call... Crossing fingers!

Sorry. Single overhead cam. I was thinking there were 2 camshafts (a DOHC, double overhead cam) but I guess not.

We have broken down in France, the garage says the timing belt has gone. Boxer 2017 2.0. Should we get it fixed here or get Green Flag to take it home? We don't have an estimate to fix it but they said it may take a week. TIA
Does a 2016 Peugeot boxer unit have a timing chain or cam belt?
Confused as some of the threads state a cam belt
Thanks

Unlikely to be a simple or cheap repair. Get it home.

My 2015 Peugeot Boxer 2.2 has a chain driven camshaft (Ford based engine ) but If it is the later 2.0 Double over head camshaft (DOHC) engine that is fitted, I believe the two cam shafts on the cylinder head are linked by a chain that is driven from a timing belt from the crankshaft.
The estimate that has been given to MartynShaw appears to list these two camshafts, a chain , and timing belt kit etc .
A Peugeot van dealer should be able to confirm which is the type of engine that is fitted if they are given the Vin/Engine number.

Yes & which is a dohc engine as well. apart from the fact that ford do not sell the camshafts & cam carrier( all one unit) as a spare part? Only place I know you can get a new one is off a polish bloke in essex who buys in new crate motors & breaks them for parts.

at least they are available as spares from the dealer.

The original post states quite clearly it is a 2.0 Peugeot, definitely not a Ducato, most replies have assumed the engine is the same as the Ducato, it is not.
It is a DOHC and it does have a belt as well as a chain, the belt drives one of the camshafts, whilst the chain connects the two shafts and drives the other, it has rockers arms which normally break when the belt breaks this normally also causes the cams to be damaged.
It would appear from the quote the garage are fully conversant with the damage and are aware of the parts and time required to repair.
Believe it or not French companies and their mechanics are capable of such repairs.

Not strictly the same because our experience occurred in Spain earlier this Spring; however, for what it’s worth, we needed to replace our engine (Ford Transit) after catastrophic turbo/injector failure. We were extremely fortunate to be towed to a Ford garage, the owners of whom were fantastic. The process took 10 days and cost €9000. There was no way Ford UK dealers would be able to match the speed with which our engine and main ancillaries were ordered and fitted (everything other than the turbo, which came from Germany, was sourced in Spain). The cost was probably about the same. From previous comments, it seems likely that the supply lines for your Boxer are likely to be shorter in France than the UK. Provided you are using an official dealer and you are satisfied with them, I think you should seriously consider getting your van fixed in situ particularly if your breakdown insurance will cover accommodation costs ( you are unlikely to be able to stay in the van). Good luck.

Lots of good advice above.
We have twice needed mechanical help while in Europe. Our experience....
The first time was wheel bearing going, typically it happened on the Friday before a bank holiday weekend ()
Our recovery service is Britannia.
We were towed and put up in a hotel until the garage re-opened. It was fixed and we were on our way in a few hours.
The second time was this year in Sardinia due to a clutch issue when the master cylinder failed. This time on a saturday morning so again we had to wait until the new week.
Given we didn't enjoy the hotel last time we opted to stay in the van and were left outside the garage for the weekend. It was only a short cycle to the town centre so we were quite content.
Total cost for the clutch rebuild was just over €1000, which wasn't welcome but felt reasonable for the job.
We were offered repatriation but didn't want to return home and felt the cost wasn't going to be better back here.

Apologies for coming into this discussion a bit late to offer advice. Only 7 years ago my Peugeot Partner Tepee suffered the same problem, we were going camping, this was before we saw the light & became ‘motorhomers’.

It cost us 3000 euros to get the vehicle sorted in France & because of the language difficulties caused more problems back home. Pigging nightmare. If you have the opportunity to repatriate I would suggest go for it.

As owners of an Autosleeper Broadway 2017 with a Peugeot Boxer 2 litre 130hp, 16000 miles, I am getting worried. We have had it main dealer serviced & have been told the timing belt ‘lasts’ 10 years (?) we are going to southern Spain again early next year for 8+ weeks for some winter sun. Risk it…?

I wish we had ours done before it broke!
Had no news from my mechanic. I guess he didn't have the time to give a call. Or the quote seemed ok for him in the end. I had no time either to call him back ... And it's now shut...of course! Sorry, I couldn't do more

The camshafts do seem a tad expensive, it might be worth asking the garage to try and source alternative ones. A quick google says they are much cheaper here if I have the right one, which is a surprise.

I wouldn’t worry about a French mechanic working on ours, it is what it is, or cest La vie as they say. They will be just as capable as over here.

Not likely!! I had a V.W. T 2.5 let go of the timing belt, £ 1500. 30+ years ago.
Mike.

Hi, here is his answer.... Use Google please, as it's bottle time ... and baby is not happy with me right now!!!!

Bonjour

Apparemment il n’a pas prévu de déculasser juste de changer les linguets de soupapes qui sont censés faire fusible lors d’une casse de distribution. Il faut donc s’attendre au fait qu’il y aura peut être une mauvaise surprise au démontage…

Cordialement

Googlebot is a member on this forum and nothing to do with Google the company. Well that is what it looks like to me. Need to ask Jim to confirm as I don't have access to the forum backend.
