I despair at the knowledge of "dealer experts" and will be taking my vehicle elsewhere for its hab check. Mine failed because the lithium battery was not housed in a box. It is, however, securely strapped in with a steel, battery retaining clamp. The ignorance of dealers leads me to despair.
Is anyone aware of any authority who publicly issue guidelines for lithium? I've checked the NCC website but can find nothing in relation to the issue.
Cheers all.

I'm still smiling at the title they have "Engineers" I went through 4 yrs of study at University taking endless exams and all my working life in heavy industry to have the title bestowed on me.
Personally I wouldn't let any of these monkeys any where near our motorhome.
Well said Sir.

I am 100% sure. Lithium batteries both LiPo (Lithium Polymer) and LiFe (Lithium Iron) do not care which way up they are.

Think about a modern battery drill, it will more than likely have a LiFe battery pack, you can hold it and use it any way that you like, it just does not matter to the actual cell. Same analogy with mobile phones which also use Lithium cells.

These cells do not have acid in side them, think of them more like a Duracell but with much better properties.

Lithium batteries HAVE to be in a box in case the acid leaks out!

Fairly obvious
Which was taking the pee out of a failed habitation check (AKA a con)
Have you got a patent on this Lithium acid Eddie?
Expert spotted this
Lithium batteries do not contain acid
OP Didn’t
Oops - I'm off to bed. I just fell for that hook, line and sinker. ::bigsmile:
OP Did lol

BTW it is Lithium Ion ;)(y) The ones we sell for motorhomes are Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4

I believe in Germany a doctor is a doctor and an engineer is an engineer. In this country a doctor is a doctor and an engineer can be anyone who decides to call themselves an engineer. What is wrong with being called a fitter, welder, electrician, installer; absolutely nothing but they are not engineers.
I spent 3 years studying for an HND in Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering when I left school and then in my 40's completed a B-Eng honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. I felt I could call myself an Engineer. However I was peed off when the company I was working for employed a kid straight from school and gave him the title " Documentation Engineer"!

This is what is inside a lithium battery, a series of dry cells and some electronics, it doesn’t matter which way up it is stalled. Motorhome/caravan battery packs are square so they replace lead acid ones easily.

Golf trolley battery packs are made in many different shapes to fit they trolled and this is how it is done!

Your point is?
You have completely misread my original post and you were trying to explain to me that like a drill they can be used any way up.

My further post asking you tongue in cheek if you were sure

There is no acid in LiFePO4 batteries, no one has seriously suggested that there is

Van Bitz were the first to show lithium batteries at the October NEC incidentally and also in 2003 again at the NEC had the first Methanol Fuel Cell on display, SFC in those days metamorphosing into EFOY we know today.

No one understood your humour !!

I loved Eddievanbitz humour. But I have to admit I'm a Chartered Engineer! I don't appreciate the title of all these so called 'engineers' in Britain. It just devalues the hard won title, achieved over a 10 year period, in my case including 3 years full time study, 7 years in industry, with further evening study, an interview and 1 day exam at the end of it.
I am just looking towards retirement! It's even harder for young people now.

You didn’t but at least I was able to help you with the difference of Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4

I was asked to a write an article about Lithium batteries for the Fun magazine which you may find useful

As you’ve only very recently joined MHF you’ll have to search for it as it published last year

A great place MH FUN as it’s an informative helpful site aimed at Fun, as some sites attract people who are a little bit up their own arse which isn’t Fun👍🏻

In all fairness Eddie I didn't get the sense of humour on the site at first and I was being very, very serious and grown-up. Now that I have made a buffoon out of myself by not realising some of the comments were meant in jest I now believe I am on the way to becoming a fully paid up member............................. or am I?

No need to search the article, I have been using Lithium cells longer than most, of course, an expert like you excepted.

I genuinely was trying to help someone (you) who did not seem to know a damned thing about modern batteries, no way was I going to look back through your posts to find that you were the forum expert on Lithium cells.

I actually think you are a bit of a fool, so you are an expert on Lithium cells, whoopie do !!

Or just pay for the damp check to keep warranty.Everything else either works or it doesn't
Worth having gas system checked by approved company

You may like to read the rules, that will help you get along here

Calling people 'a fool' because you got the wrong end of the stick, isn't really the done thing on MHF

No one has been rude to you

Don't worry I will get along just fine, I will do what I always do which is to try and help people, just like I done for you !! Little did I know what an expert you are.

If the forum owner wants to give me advice on how to conduct myself then I will listen to him, but you I don't think so.

To answer the question there's not normally any need to mount a lithium unit in a box, also VRLA lead-acid types can often be room fitted too with a vent tube to the outside. Our primary concern for lithium is 'cheap' product with no provenance, good quality units have their own battery charge control and need a simple fixed 13.6 (ish) volt DC feed, no need for clever desulphation or equalisation modes.

For context. I did not know who John Wickersham was and that he had passed. Herewith a link: https://www.practicalmotorhome.com/news/john-wickersham-a-tribute
Oh dear, it seems that the CCC does not know much about LiFePo4 batteries. Or the makers of them and the likes of Victron and Votronic are getting it all wrong

I’ll live 😉

BTW You didn’t thank me for pointing out that there is no such thing as lithium iron, but your welcome 😉

We had a similar issue a few years ago, when the insurers were unhappy that we were installing large quantities of LiFePO4 batteries into brand new motorhomes, having read horror stories about Samsung phones catching fire, again mixing up LiFePO4 chemistry with Lithium ION used in phones and hand tools.

Took a while but we got there.

"BTW You didn’t thank me for pointing out that there is no such thing as lithium iron, but your welcome 😉"

It was an abbreviation/shortening of the full name and is commonly used in other leisure sectors, no need to thank and I stand by what I said.

Don’t forget the NCC are the people that build leaky motorhomes and can’t organise a proper dealer warranty network, so don’t hold your breath sadly
