EHU surge protection

Has anyone used one of these devices? It fits in the consumer unit. I've just asked a seller on eBay if it forgets its setting when power is disconnected. If it doesn't then it looks promising.

Yes I have one fitted. Seems to work as expected. Over and under voltage cutoff has been seen to work by me. Yes it holds it settings after power off.
Described as Chinese junk by various pundits on here.

Just ordered the AVS30, will fig next weekend.Hopefully will never need it.

I cannot see any specifications for the response times. Most critical on over voltage.
I've found the same unit on AliExpress for under a fiver! The specification says the response time is variable from 0.1s to 10s with the default 0.1s. By comparison the AVS30 says its response time to overvoltage is <20ms which is very much faster.

I guess a very fast response time would help protect electronic items, the slower response should be sufficient for relays, heating elements etc.

This is the AliExpress advert.

Where you can also find the AVS30 for about £30 including shipping - assuming it's genuine!

For the AVS, you would want to see the inside of the unit to see whether the spelling for the "Blind " setting dial has been spelt " blind " or "Bund " as in the case of the counterfeit one, my money would be on the latter, but it's your choice.

These cheah AVS's & OV protectors aren't cheap if they fail to protect a few hundred quids worth of equipment, not worth the risk IMO.

I would be so wary on any of these kind of products sold on Aliexpress. There are so many fake products on there, some of which are inferior copies of the real thing, and some of which are blatant rip-offs, which have no real working parts and are made just to fool people with their appearance. And you don't know until you get them and even then you often won't know.

There is a very simple way to decide if it is worth it ....
Weigh up the saving you make from buying them against the cost if they don't do their job .... I think that difference is clear when it comes to something like a surge protector?

Caveat Emptor

(plus, ignoring the cost aspect, even if it is a perfect working copy, should you be supporting a seller who is just ripping off the original inventor and maker of a product that was never greatly expensive to start with, such as Sollatek with their AVS30?)

I agree! I'm in the middle of fixing my Webasto heater after an electrical failure last year. It runs perfectly on diesel so we have been able to use the MH but getting the electrics sorted has been very expensive. When all the bills come in the total will be about £800. :(

I'll write it up on here when everything is fixed. I don't know why it failed on a French aire but overvoltage is a possibility which is why I will fit some protection. A UK sourced AVS30 looks favourite at the moment. :)

If you buy an AVS30 from anywhere other than Sollatek themselves, their Amazon web store, or RS Components, it might just be one of these!

I bought a fake from eBay it’s unlikely to be genuine
