Ducato engine/gearbox given up in France.

Sorry about your problems and hope you get it fixed soon but I wonder what are your chances of getting redress from the garage which changed the belt. If it was a a reputable company you should be OK, however if it was one of the thousands of back street places they may not be interested and don't have insurance. Keep a record and bring back old parts. Good luck
I had Dotties cam belt and water pump changed 3 years ago and got a written guarantee from Gates as to full repair in case of failure, subject to vat registered garage doing the change.

Oh Heck , for some reasons my mind has typed Muret instead of Blagnac... old age I guess!!!
Oh dear it's even worse than expected.... Try again says the electronic voice in my head....
"For some reasons my mind has typed BLAGNAC instead of MURET"..... Old age? Yeah right.... Advanced senility more like!!!!

Sounds like it's going to be very expensive if the garage that changed the belt don't take responsibility for it.

Do you know what belt kit was fitted?
I personally can’t see what difference what manufactures belt was used. If it failed it failed.
mine is skf if it fails then fails.

Yes I agree good manufacture none genuine are quite acceptable but no matter what type is fitted, the quality of repair is essential.

En route to Toulouse on the back of a low loader as I type. The driver has 2 phones and a hand held sat nav and using all 3.
Ive never been to Alton Towers but I bet they dont have a ride as scary as this. 😂
Will update, as and when.
We broke down in France in the Alps. Picked up on a low loader. Very similar experience. The guy was driving along mountain roads, steering with his knees, using two phones, one in each hand... while smoking.

700 € is not £500.
Its North of £575.
And Yodeli is not quoting for what has happened to the OP.
He/She is over a barrel, a long way from home and, unlike Yodeli (who I have no argument with) who drove the van into the garage and expected to drive it out again, the OP's van wasn't moving.
We're comparing apples with oranges.

It always surprises me that when one has a cambelt change, one never insists on a NEW tensioner stud.
Many mechanics fit new cambelt, new tensioner but, because it's not part of the kit, they do not replace the old stud?
Your spot on with that comment there . I've just replaced my own cam belt , on a year 2000 Hymer . I found the old belt in good condition , but discovered the anti vibration damper seized , so i replace the lot , including bolts . Easy to source , with the cost being reasonable .
But then it amazes me , that some spend thousands on a new van , then whine when a 2 quid bulb blows . Just the way it is i guess .

Oh dear! I don't know if I would have left him go away with my motorhome that way! First time I see this! I'm quite happy that no one tried to trail my Max in those conditions, best way to have a heart attack.
This is one of the consequences of "job blackmail". Employer saying if you want to keep your job, manage to do "so many" rescuing before noon/evening. Yukkk!

We had been stuck broken down in an aire in annecy for 9 days , this was the 5th truck sent to recover , the other 4 were useless with any excuse not to lift it , our MoHo was not even a year old with 3000 miles so under warranty, just as well , 8 weeks later & £6,000 of unnecessary work , it had already broke down in evreux at 5 weeks old ( same fault ) rebooted the comformattic computer but faulty sensor not identified or replaced , at least they had a good recovery truck lol
so for us no confidence in french fiat professional garages

I surely understand this.
For me it is not FIAT truck that I call but my insurer truck' services which makes the whole difference.
Somewhere on FUN JJ has posted what truck they sent me for a rear blown up tyre... you should see the engine! That's what I call a good service!

I haven’t read every reply on here so it may have been mentioned previously.

If the breakdown does turn out to be as a result of an error by the garage who carried out the timing belt change get a written report from the repairing garage to that effect. It could help you recover your costs eg Small Claims Court.

I am sure that if you explain this to yodeli she could instruct the repairing garage for you.

Good luck.

What cute kids, grandma
Not grand kids...work! Childminding...a bit specific as in English only!!!
5 days a week and then, stadium warden on weekends... I'm very difficult to unplug, always working 😂

Mixyblob

I just had Benjamin on the phone. He said he already sent pics to you. I let him tell you about the invoice as the whole engine has broken even though the cambelt hadn't completly broken...

:cry::cry::sym:

Cambelt maybe intact, but it's definitely jumped a tooth or two to do that damage, so maybe the idler or water pump have failed ?
Hope you get things sorted to your satisfaction.
I know when my clutch let go last week, I said a little prayer as I was only two miles from home and the same distance to my local garage, which eased the stress considerably.

That's what's know in the trade as NFG!

So on the off chance, the cambelt isn't to blame, what do they put it down to?

Which bit in the photos is the cambelt?
