My husband is 70 in November can you please advise me what the stages of the application process are to retain the C1 cateogory. I am hearing some real horror stories about missing deadline dates and not being able to get the C1 added back on. Also I understand there is a requirement for eye tests and medicals - where is it best to get these done?

C1 is not a professional license for want of a better description, D D+E. C C+ E are professional licences. C1 can be held independently.

Some doctors will be able to fill in both the vision and medical assessment sections of the report. If your doctor is unable to fully answer all the questions on the vision assessment, you must have it filled in by an optician or optometrist.

As of 20 June 2019, DVLA no longer accepts medical applications (D4) completed by Doctors on Wheels Ltd.

Bit of digging found this snippet.

Normally an application to renew a lorry or bus licence at age 45 or over must include a medical examination report (D4) which is signed by a doctor. However, NHS doctors cannot carry out these examinations so lorry and bus drivers are currently unable to obtain D4 medical reports required to support their application.

So, in these special circumstances, a D4 will not be required when applying to renew a lorry or bus licence until further notice. However, this will only apply if the licence has expired or is due to expire on or after 1 January 2020.

However, please note: where a bus or lorry licence is renewed without the production of a valid D4, it will only be valid for a period of one year.

This will not affect applications for renewal of licences made by those aged 65 or over as these licences are already only valid for one year.

This notice does not apply to any application to renew small lorry (C1) and minibus (D1 (101)) entitlements included on car licences issued before 1997.

Any driver who has already obtained a D4 can still submit this with their application. A licence issued in such cases would be valid for the usual full term that applies.

But D4Drivers is accepted. They will complete both the medical and sight test. Some local GP’s are not that familiar with the forms plus not sure how many will be able to do the eye test - ours wouldn’t - doctors fee is often plus £100 plus ( our was £140) plus the opticians fee. I have financial/personal interest in D4Drivers!

Yes 1 year if not submitting a medical or sight test due to the Covid issues but 3 years if you do, and before the old licence expires.
