My husband is 70 in November can you please advise me what the stages of the application process are to retain the C1 cateogory. I am hearing some real horror stories about missing deadline dates and not being able to get the C1 added back on. Also I understand there is a requirement for eye tests and medicals - where is it best to get these done?

The problem sounds difficult but as long as you can pass the medical
I was going to have the medical carried out by my doctor who I’ve know for 25 yrs until I found out the cost I felt I was being ripped off got it done for £45 00
just had to go to a place in Southampton not a problem

As far as the medical is concerned they do not accept GPonwheels for some reason, i am still waiting for a date from my GP and will also need to book an eye test both have to be paid for, from memory I paid £125 for the medical and £10 for the Printed eye test results from Specsavers

Should not have to pay for eye test
I did mine just under two years ago I expect it’s gone up now but it was £45 00
got to renew next year
but my doctor wanted to charge £190 00
but he did provide my records free of charge
happy days

Unfortunately some doctors, not all thank goodness, see this as either a great opportunity of additional income for anything private like driving licence and insurance medicals or they are not too bothered as there life is too full with the day to day NHS. They also take their time to book you in/send the response back. I am not knocking doctors by the way it’s just the way it is.

I think it is the uniform with GP on wheel the checked shirt and the cowboy boots were the giveaway.:rofl:

I did mine through D4Drivers, made appointment online £55. And all was well. The docs wanted £110 but no eye test. No brainer really. (y)

I’m confused the D2 form covered bus and lorry are they C1 category? I got my 3 year license but letter said bus and lorry only last for 12 months then new medical but the rest carry on for full 3 years if I lose bus and lorry do I lose C1?

you cannot request a renewal pack on line at the moment they have been removed.

i need mine renewed before we shoot off across the water mid September, but my license is not up until October. i should!!!! get my pack from DVLA this week... but i am not holding my breath on that happenning.

i have downloaded the D4 form and will be collecting the D2 from local post office tomorrow. i have my medical booked with D4Drivers in 10 days time and hopeing !!!!! to get it renewed in time.
Yes use D4 as last time I used my doctor, she filled in the form wrong again, Doctors don't do many

Requirement of full HGV licence. But medical every 3 years after you are 70 is all you need to maintain a C1 licence, which allows you to drive up to 7.5t MGW.

I sent the whole lot off and it returned between 3-4 weeks later, last Saturday in fact, a couple of weeks past my 70th birthday.
Alright for some, posted mine on 4th May still waiting.

They may actually be processing it at last, status has changed from expired to "It has not been possible to display/match your driving licence" or they have lost it.

I think whatever the age we will find it inconvenient. I would suggest the effort should go into pushing for a higher weight limit, pointing out that a car and caravan can be well over 3500kg and far less stable than a motorhome.

Did any of you see the letter in MMM about getting the DVLA to change the age from 70 upwards. Don't know what others think
The DVLA are an agency that deals with manages the issue of driving licences in accordance with the law. They have no powers to make or change that law; that is up to parliament and/or the government. So it is no good pushing the DVLA to do something they do not have the powers to do.

is a new photo required?

No new photo required, if you have a current passport providing you send your application in more than 30days before your current licence expires. Less than 30days you have to send a new photo.

I sent my application of 4th May still waiting.

thanks Lenny HB passport reference it is then. i have me medical late next week with D4 and have struggled to get a most recent D2 although managed a 04 / 19 copy and the most recent D4.

i have until mid October but want to travel across the water 3rd week Sept so trying to get it sorted asap. but it aint easy...... to state the obvious!!

i can see me having to reschedule the shuttle at the last minute until the license comes back.

I think you will be OK they appear to be processing new applications in a week or so but not clearing the backlog.

wishful thinking but perhaps its easier to clear the new stuff and not let the pile get any bigger.... I can but make sure there is no reason to return my application..... and hope!!

I think you will find that D4 will have both forms ready for you.
When I booked mine they sent a confirmation email back asking me to ensure I took several things; the normal things like photo id, etc (your old driving licence) several other things but it also specifically asked you to bring along the forms. When I arrived they asked me for the form. Clearly it saves time from their perspective as filling before the appointment. Also have at hand your NI number (wherever you fill out the form that is).
