My husband is 70 in November can you please advise me what the stages of the application process are to retain the C1 cateogory. I am hearing some real horror stories about missing deadline dates and not being able to get the C1 added back on. Also I understand there is a requirement for eye tests and medicals - where is it best to get these done?

Guess it must be luck of the draw, I sent the D4 off in MAY, NO medical because that’s what it said on DVLA, I was 70 in JUNE and got my licence back on JULY the 2nd.

Is that licence for 3 years, I vaguely remember some mention of licences being renewed for one year without medical due to the difficulty of having a medical.

As far as i know the 1 year extension was only for HGV drivers it didnt apply to us requiring the C1 part and the 7 month extension only applies to a photo card licence renewal, how about a 1 year extension for every one that has a licence, job done and finished for 1 year, Muppets in charge. Bill

Are you sure that was not a D1 form? D4 is the medical examiners report which goes to the DVLA with a D2 form to keep your C1. D1 is ok if you don’t need the C1/C1+E categories.

Yes, my mistake, it was the D1.

Interesting Mickey1, it would seem they have automatically given you a one year extension on the lorry/bus categories.

I sent my D4 in April, the D2 followed a couple of weeks later as I had trouble getting one, both tracked and signed for, then the DVLA closed down as far a contact is concerned, I then sent a letter tracked etc some weeks ago, they sent me a letter with another D2 and asked for my D4, I had a copy so sent that back signed for again , I am now waiting for a reply having told them I was taking the family away this month. I am very frustrated

Did you eventually send a D2 and D4 together in one envelope i did something similar and the first two forms never meet up so had to go back to square one almost, if you did the two together you may stand a chance. Bill

Are you sure that wasn’t the normal expiry date of your licence. I had to renew my licence 3 months before my 70 birthday and then it expired on my 70th birthday I need to renew my C1 entitlement including a medical. The Gov web site says you need to submit a medical to renew at 70.

See #67 above, the letter explains all.

I have been following this thread and can see the difficulties people are having obtaining D2 forms.

My difficulties are worse since I am, and will continue to be 1,000 miles from a P.O.

I have downloaded and printed the Da form, no problem

The DVLA website states one cannot request the D2/D4 pack online, but does not tell one how to request it.

Do I have to put a letter request for the Pack to Swansea and wait in the queue of 250,000 items to be processed.

Answers please - online.

The D4 can be downloaded on line. The D2 cannot because it has a pouch to put your photo in so it either has to be collected from a post office or posted out by the DVLA.

But if you are that far away from a post office how are you going to get a UK qualified Doctor (and maybe Optician) to carry out the medical fill in the D4 and sign it anyway? .

The answer to that is that any EU qualified Dr. is authorised to do it. I think that is on the form or in the notes.

An EU Dr. has done my last two over 70 C1 D4 renewal forms and there was no problem.

That could change after 31st Dec.

The medical has to be done here i think as you need a doc with GMC number.
For the last 18 years my son-in-laws father has used a Polish doctor for out of hours cover. There are plenty with GMC numbers. He lives in Poland ,flies in Monday a.m. home saturday a.m

I am sure our Dr. here in Poland does not have a GMC number.

As I understand it any Dr. registered to practise in an EU state can conduct and sign the D4 medical.

Haven’t trawled through this so apologies if it has been posted before but just had this email back from the DVLA which sets it out quite well.

Your application has been received at the DVLA.
Whilst DVLA’s paper application processes have been severely impacted by the pandemic we are prioritising applications relating to Vocational drivers and critical workers to make sure you get the documentation you need. We’ll do our best to deal with your application as quickly as possible.
Providing you have a current driving licence and you have not been told by a doctor or optician that you should not drive, you should be able to drive while DVLA is considering your application. However if your licence has expired you will first need to ensure that you can meet the requirements set out in our leaflet INF188/6 ‘Can I drive while my application is with DVLA?’ This leaflet is available on the gov uk website.

Difficulty getting D2 Form

With DVLA being hardly operating and being 1,000 miles from a P.O. I was having difficulty getting a D4 form and posted such on here last Thursday.

'Snaffle 22' kindly offered to go to a P.O. to collect and post to me, which he did the same day and the whole D2/D4 pack arrived this morning.

A very public thank you to him for such quick help

Gratefully, Geoff
