Do you sympathize with residents?

Same as the residents along the nc500 etc , times change, if you enjoyed a view for years unblemished then count yourself lucky as you're not entitled to it.
You seem to be arguing that residents are not entitled to the views but we in our motorhomes are!

Take the sea views away from these declining coastal towns and you just make matters worse. I prefer the more balanced approach of Gromett of finding a solution that leaves room for motorhomes but keeps it under some control. Yes there is some very poor newspaper reporting about motorhomes and yes you can’t buy a permanent view but if we don’t have some sympathy for residents the local authority will simply ban us altogether. We don’t get to vote in local elections but residents do.

I certainly do sympathise with the residents. Having lived in Lancaster until last year I regularly drove along the front at Morecambe and the number of Motorhomes was staggering to see. However I do think the city council need to stop talking about the problem and get off their bfa’s and do something. Allowing overnighting on a couple of the many carparks with basic facilities would be a start.

Those motorhomes aren't parked there for the view they're parked because its free and easy parking.

I certainly wouldn't pay £10 to park there . I would just park in a side street with no charge.

The UK is so backward with its approach and the reason for that is its citizens are some of the weakest easiest controlled in Europe. Everyone just accepts the pisspoor state of the place.

Would anyone visit Morecambe if it didn’t have a sea view?

Most likely .. as most don't go for the view . They go for the beach, the bars etc etc . Its hardly the hanging gardens of babylon.

I've been to Morecombe many times but not in the last 10-15 years. I don't remember it being very pretty .

We took the grandkids to a Morecambe caravan park a few weeks ago, for a couple of nights. Have to say Morecambe looked worse than it did on my last visit there twenty years ago. And that’s no mean feat. The sea view however is outstanding and there’s great beaches as well. Morcambe is of course getting the Eden Project of the North in the next few years, I would imagine this would provide a huge benefit to the town and perhaps limit the accessibility to the sea front for motorhomes anyway. Then of course the locals will moan that they can’t see the sea for the big dome.

I have no idea why all the motorhomes are even there. Its an awful place. Why would you stay there? We called in to get some LPG last month on the way back to the ferry (Morrisons). Motorhomes everywhere. Parked everywhere.

Its not pretty. The pubs and bars are horrendously rough. Its so run down. Everything boarded up. Yet motorhomes are there in their droves. Someone must be able to explain this.

That's a very poor argument Tam, it would be much easier to park out of town on a layby somewhere.
As you say, if you had to pay, you would park down a side street.
Of course they are parked there for the view, just like the homeowners, who have paid a premium over the cost of similar town homes, to have that view but the Motorhomers want it for free!

Little wonder, some other coastal resorts ban parking for MH's. It's only a matter of time before it happens there. 🤔

I’m a Lancaster resident living less than a mile from the Prom. As with everything two sides to a story and much like the WW1 message “send reinforcements we’re going to advance” ending up as “ send three and four pence we’re going to a dance”. Aspects of reporting are also taken out of context to either support or not support a viewpoint. I understand both viewpoints neither which is totally right or wrong in my opinion but you need to be in possession of as much information as possible to take a view.
Whilst having seen several actions seen in the reporting which I condone I have to say the most annoying thing for me on a personal note is on a flat, wide promenade with ample width why do a number insist on putting at least 50% of the motorhome/camper on the footpath? I can safely say it’s not for levelling!
Sorry if you were the person who asked about going to Morecambe if there was no sea view, it made me chuckle, same as asking who would go to Stonehenge if there was no monument there.

It's simple. Because the UK is so anti motorhome it's increasingly difficult to find free parkups. And the UK councils etc don't seem to be able to grasp that .

They insist on having a charge in place for any motorhome parking they create .

So they just move the problem elsewhere. It will never stop people parking for free. They'll just move to another free spot.

We were there a couple of weeks ago and was nose to tail with Vans, motorhomes and caravans. A couple of the caravans looked like they had been there a while, had waste and water barrels outside and hooked up . The majority though were old vans and TBH I think most who were stopping there are probably full timers who can't afford a home and so sling a mattress in the back of a van for somewhere to live.

Its has nice views but don't remember being much housing where they were all parked up, was a long row of empty shops, a pub, lovely café, and If I remember rightly an Aldi. The nice flats and houses were further down and there is no parking on the street down there.

As housing becomes out of reach for folk then I think this will become more the norm. Far cheaper to buy an old van for somewhere to live, and do it up as and when you can afford to add convenience to it.

Personally I wouldn't park there , but the ones who are probably want to be close to the town for a reason. Bars restaurants shops etc .

And yes I do want the view for free 🤷‍♂️ I make no denial of it. I'm not of the mindset that I have to somehow grease the palm of society to survive. One of the reasons I'm fulltime in a van is because its a cheaper way to live.

I pay for local roads in my Council Tax and for water and sewage in my Water Bill. I assume you expect to use these facilities for nothing, charging for parking seems a fair way of getting a contribution from those passing through an area. I just want to have somewhere to park my van when I visit an area and don’t mind paying if it stops height barriers and outright bans. Perhaps those who expect something for nothing are spoiling it for the wider motorhome community as well as for residents?

That's the bit I don't get. There are very few of these and you wouldn't go into the pubs without an armed guard. I don't know of any restaurants apart from the Toby Carvery (which is out of town)

So it can only be for the view or simply somewhere to freeload where no one harasses you.

Have you been to Hawick (Scottish Borders)?

Yes the aire is a section of a car park. There is water and waste facilities, it's near supermarkets and not far from the High Street and restaurants plus it is FREE.

I paid those for nearly 30 years. I've paid enough as far as I'm concerned. I've paid for far more services than I've ever used in my lifetime and many services that we no longer get that the older generation did. The younger generation are going to get an even more raw deal. 🙄

I'm now of the mindset if they ban it one place I'll just go somewhere else .. eventually they will have to ban motorhomes from being on the roads at all because there will always be somewhere to park. I stay out the UK as much as I possibly can . If it wasn't for lemmings in 2016 I'd be out of it for good.

Yes

It definitely doesn't have a sea view lol

But I'm aware it's one of the few free ones.

In Scotland they've turned many once free and deserted overnight carparks in to easy pickings charging £10-15 per night to park with no facilities. Some don't even have a bin. There's a half dozen up the fife coast now

All thanks to camera and their big mouths

As I said I've not been in morecambe over 10 years and probably closer to 15 so I was just guessing .... from memory it doesn't have a great view so maybe it is simply because it's free.

Which should tell the councils something.

Create free parking places and you will move the problem.

Personally I'm not in to paying to park in a carpark that would normally be empty overnight just because I'm a motorhome and not a car.

I am not shocked at your views, you have expressed them on a number of occasions, so we know pretty much how you feel about the subject, however, I am shocked you do not remember Morecambe having the most fantastic views across the bay to the Lake District

Maybe I've just seen a lot of views and didn't find it very memorable or interesting. There are some lovely parts of the UK.. but morecambe, Blackpool etc just isn't one of them .

I doubt that very much. In your sums did you include paying for all of doctors you have seen so far, and the NHS costs/social care costs you WILL use in the future? Did you also include the costs for the armed services for your lifetime (you do get a benefit from this, avoiding being bombed out of your motorhome)? Did you include all of your teachers' salaries?

I've not seen a doctor in about 3 years , I resent paying for armed forces as we need to keep our nose out of other countries business and sort our own shit out.

Your strawman argument won't work here. If you're happy paying tax to fund a corrupt self serving government etc you carry on. Personally I like many thousands of others who are waking up from this will continue to take out of the system what i can and make sure I leave this world having got my moneys worth.

Yes thankfully 😁

Believing in fictional characters is also a weird approach to life. I grew out of that around 10/12 years old .

It isn't scrounging . I've paid in plenty over the years. I claim nothing and if I live long enough to retire I'll get the bare minimum.

As I said if you want to be a modern day slave that's your choice . Don't expect everyone else to want the same.

Just wondering, if you want to stay out of the UK full time, could you not apply for citizenship elsewhere? 🤔

I can understand your frustration, as a single person who has paid in for nearly twice as long as you, I haven't had any children, so No Family allowance, No calls on the NHS for any childbirth/ hospital costs, No Council Housing costs, never any dole as, most of the time in the UK, I have been Self Employed yet paying stamp!

Do you think I deserve a hefty rebate? 🤔

PS. These EXTRA services we didn't pay for but got, can you remind me,

It's about as far from the sea as you can get but there are river walks!! A local group (Scocha) wrote a Hawick Sea Shanty which is brilliant. I tried to find it on Youtube but couldn't.
