Do you sympathize with residents?

I do, passed the white wall of vans many times, not helped by a few owners living like travellers with a mess outside their vans on the pavement, however, Morecambe allow it so people are going to use it, the views across the bay are stunning. Will only stop when council introduce restrictions, meanwhile residents fume.

Blackpool, St Annes and Fleetwood banned/are banning overnighting but have provided aires, they are the way to go, I agree with the comments about storage/vans never moving, there are some real eyesores along the prom, then again some of the properties are real eyesores!

Gulp😳 we stayed there last month on way to Scotland, last min decision to go night before original plans. It was very busy on road and lots of police cars attending the fights between homeless drug users further down than we were . We arrived late set off early did not leave a trace… but paid to stay at Lytham St Anne’s on way home in one of the Aires, that was much more civilised and no one else there! We stayed because it was allowed, prefer to do this to break long journeys, maybe asking for parking fees would deter the long term residents ?

I have some sympathy with the residents, that great wall of big white boxes is not pretty. Individually the motorhomes are not doing anything wrong, I might park there for a few hours and I would spend money that contributes to the local economy. We are victims of the increasing popularity of our leisure pastime. Sadly the local authority may react by imposing a complete ban, the locals vote for them not the visitors. I would prefer to see a time limit of a few hours, allowing us to stop to enjoy the view and local attractions. Combining this with sensibly priced alternative overnight parking would be a fair arrangement (in my opinion). I do not expect free overnight parking in a popular coastal location.

I do usually Freedom Camp but I would never stay where I wasn't wanted. Also on principle I never stay in a spot for more than three nights.

But my personal rules wouldn't help these residents as, it seems, when I moved on another white cake tin would replace me.

I sympathise with the residents, I have nothing but dislike for those who act in an uncivilised way.

We parked there for the day 20 years ago after leaving a campsite. We were the only motorhome there.

Pity we can’t stay longer on the continent, that’s where I would be if I were to live/holiday like that.

Some amazing free sites with services and lots of municipale sites in France.

Many free sites right on the Normandy coast. Pretty, peaceful and with great views.

German stelplatz etc.

But then, I am not a Anglophile, so I am biased.

I sympathise with the Residents and it’s not something l would do but there are 1000 upon 1000’s of people who have lost the view to their property when building has blocked it out.

You have no rights to a view it’s the chance you take, many people have purchased off plan being told the view fabulous and no bounding will occur because the land is protected only for the Developers to build a later Phase themselves.

I see some want to ban overnight parking with which I have some sympathy, provided alternative provision is made. I have no sympathy with those wanting to ban daytime parking just because it’s a Motorhome. Taxed, insured etc should be treated like any other vehicle.

I wouldn't dream of parking on the seafront and cause annoyance to the residents , the council will end up legislating and put a stop to this

It surprises me that so many camper-vanners want to park up and look at houses and flats!

Morecambe, a while ago at least, is a husk of what it once was. I looked a buying an investment property there and some of the areas, particularly away from the front were frankly dire (similar to Backpool last time I visited). Has it improved? I don't know. But the one thing in it's favour is the wonderful bay so I don't blame the residents one bit.
It has been hailed as The Naples of the North (I think because the bay has a passing resemblance to Naples Bay). But if you can't see the bay for metal boxes, it'll have to change it's marketing approach.
One historical 'claim to fame' is rather interesting: "...... for three years in the 1930s, Eric the whale, a dead whale carcass, was a very popular attraction until he was eventually cremated in 1938 and replaced with a Big Dipper at the fun fair." Poor Eric.

Had to laugh at the out of touch it only costs £12 to park up and have electric, wonder who he is and can he give us all details.
Can understand the frustration at loss of view but if no motorhomes will they then say the same about cars?

How times change. weejocky of Freeloading Tosser fame, got villified here for moaning about people like them years ago. Yet here we are now sticking up for the homeowners. '\

I have a lot of sympathy for the residents, especially if there is mess made and left.

It would be nice to have photos backing up the reported abuse.

I'd also like to know where the £12 camp site is...........

I foresee a ban or parking restriction but whether there is an Aire or similar provision put in place is unknown. It's a lose / lose situation.

Earlier this year, it was alleged a full-sized bus of tourists from Windermere parked up for the whole night, and 'lights were seen on inside the cabin well into the early hours'.

Oh my god, a bus was parked for 1 night AND had some lights on!

Typical piece full of nonsense and contradictions. How the residents can tell where the van owners are spending their money, or not is anyone's guess.

My favourite quote:

They arrive fully-loaded with glasses, wine, beer and food. That's really annoying too.

I also liked:
"These are people in the 50s-age group who should know better." Do we know if they actually charge to park overnight? If not then they should do and limit it to maybe half a dozen places? It seemed to work in Exmouth when we went there a few years back. I think it was about £8 for the night. I think they are moving towards a more aire/steleplatz place from what I have read.

I have mixed sympathies.

I am totally opposed and irritated by those MH/Campervan types who pull up in car parks or on seafront roads and treat the place like a campsite, taking up loads of space, scattering their belongings everywhere and generally making lots of noise and mess. ESPECIALLY those who do it where there are clear signs saying 'no motorhomes/campervans' or 'no overnighting'. It drives me up the wall when they post pictures online and say 'we stayed here and ignored these signs - **** can't enforce the restrictions' or 'no-one is going to tell us what we can or can't do'. Which happens far too often IMHO. The same people then scream and yell when there are more draconian measures taken, including the installation of height barriers, and the banning of MH/Campervan parking AT ANY TIME OF DAY, as has happened in a number of seaside areas in Lincolnshire and Hampshire/Dorset to my own knowledge, and I'm sure elsewhere. One well-known campervan blogger/vlogger posted footage of his van on Welsh coastal spots during lockdown, when it was not only ignorant but illegal to be doing what he was doing, and he paraded it as though he's some kind of hero. :wondering:

On the other hand, some residents are also ridiculously over-entitled. Someone I know came to visit me and parked up in a nearby street as my home at the time had no parking, and double yellow lines in front and behind. They were not parked opposite anyone's drive, or directly in front of their house. They were parked legally and out of the way. But the next morning they went to get their van to find someone had put a note on it to say 'don't park here'. Well 'tough titty' local lady. The van was taxed, insured, MOT'd, legal, was parked correctly and without being an obstruction, and for just one night. And we're talking a small high top panel van here, not a Winnebago. People don't own the entire street they live on, and in this particular case the van was not even directly outside the house owned by the person objecting to it being there!
Those who say 'campers should be on campsites' are also nuts. Even if I chose to stay overnight on a site, my campervan is my regular transport and I'm not going to go to interesting or scenic places and then not move from the site while I'm there. My own van is similar sized, and sometimes smaller than some of the massive SUVs which are so prevalent everywhere these days!

Personally I find sea views boring, Much rather see the countryside.
I should think the motorhomes are only there because it's free.

I can see both sides. But I think it is excessive judging by the picture.

A combination of any or all of the following.

Limit the number of spaces designated for motorhomes, These probably located at either end?
Ban overnight parking entirely.
Charge for parking with a limit of one overnight per week.

At the harshest end. allow parking during the day but no occupants in the vehicle and nothing out around the vehicle like chairs, steps BBQ etc.

My personal choice would be limited parking spots dedicated to motorhomes at each end. Charged a reasonable amount say £10 for the night, with a 1 night limit.
No overnight parking anywhere else.

Other possibility is motorhomes not allowed during the day before 6pm. Then charged £10 and must leave by 10am the next day.
Day trippers could then get access to parking in their smaller cars and motorhomes could park overnight and give something back.

Do I sympathise with residents?

No 🤷‍♂️.

Nimbys who love to complain, if it wasn't about this it would be something else.

Same as the residents along the nc500 etc , times change, if you enjoyed a view for years unblemished then count yourself lucky as you're not entitled to it.

The usual made up claims of health risks , toilet waste blah blah all added for dramatic effect and in the hope of bringing on restrictions which of course it will do but it won't stop people in cars stopping and taking a piss etc as they frequently do.

Almost daily I get some story on my phone news app about the latest drama on the n500 , today it was someone doing their dishes in a bus stop as it was raining. Yesterday it was campervans parked outside a school in Fort William.
The Scottish sun seems to go hunting for these greeting faced curtain twitching Virgins who had no friends in school to hear their complaints.

I think we need a spokesperson from fun to go on gmtv or something and tell these nimbies if they lived in France etc they'd just have to get used to it. ... or move.

The wording is always the same too , " fancy motorhomes " " expensive motorhomes " blah blah blah .

So do I have sympathy.

Nah do I feck. If they are just parked whether it be day or night then they've a right to do so the same as cars , work vans etc etc.

Do something about the individuals that are leaving rubbish etc or sat outside on chairs and leave the rest too it.

We don't penalise every car driver when the odd one does something stupid ( we'll apart from banning mobile phones etc because some can't multi task) it's time the press stopped giving these wingers a platform.

It is unrealistic to ban motorhomes from parking anywhere that other vehicles are permitted. If councils don't want them in their car parks, one can but assume they would prefer them to use on street parking.
Exactly.

One has to admit, there is quite a visual difference between a row of 5ft high car and 10ft high Motorhomes?

With a car, one can usually see through the windows, with a line of MH's parked nose to tail, it must be like someone has erected a tall fence blocking out ALL the seaview? 🤔

I feel the same way everytime I see buildings ( including houses) blocking a view ... damm scourge on society all that concrete.

That section is hilarious.

I bet that person was glued to their window, curtain twitching like mad ...probably wearing a path in the Axminster rug .

Could you clarify please, I can’t work out which side you support, the residents or the people in motorhomes?:LOL:
