This seem controversial but, do you let your dog run free in the country side. When out walking we often see people do this and at times the owners seem to have little or no control. Have to say we do get a bit miffed when a loose muddy dog runs up and get covers our Clothes in mud (ooops sorry says the owner he is just excited to meet you.).

For those who just let dogs run wild here is an interesting article on why your Dog should be kept on a lead from the 1st March to the 31st of March to the end of July why your Dog should be kept on a lead as it’s carnage to wildlife not to do so. We can live with muddy trousers

I always walk my dogs in safe places off the lead. This usually entails a fair drive there and back. No dog will get any exercise tethered to an old duffer like me. They are always within sight and under control and the only wildlife they show any interest in is squirrels.
They are not small dogs and have been trained not to jump up at anyone, they are cautious with strangers anyway.
I don't like muddy dogs jumping up at me any more than anyone else, and find it is the small dogs who are usually the problem perhaps the owners don't realise even small dogs need training.

Here we go again 🫣😂
The wild life trusts believe it’s an issue, and whilst there may be responsible owners we know there are irresponsible ones out there as well.
Found a web image that shows what I do.

A full tyre rotation including the spare, this was/will be again part of my pre-season prep on the MH, did 11,000km per annum on average with the last one.

It´s a bit of work but while you're at it the brakes can be checked and dealt with as required plus a good look underneath, I know not everyone has the time/equipment/ability to deal with it but your tyre centre will.

Excellent tip
And pretty much everything we all do has a negative impact on the planet 🙄
Why make it worse if someone has a dog that disrupts wild life and they know it has a negative impact

Suki runs free, so far she had killed 67 sheep, 9 foxes, 12 cows and 8 farmers

Whether the dog is on a lead or not, inattentive owners are the problem, walking dogs whilst on the phone, not looking at what dog is doing, means they walk on ahead of the dog and the dog craps on path or pavement and just as worse, poo bags hung from trees and bushes.
Whilst wildlife watching I have been accosted by numerous dogs off leads, one Labrador tried to hump me whilst I was sat behind my tripod and 500mm lens, the only way I could remove him was to punch him on the snout, (not happy doing that to a dog). The owner wasn’t interested and just got annoyed with dog because it would not return to her. I didn’t see another Otter that day so really pissed off.🤨🤨

I don’t currently have a dog, but when we had our pair of German Shepherds they loved nothing more than hunting down the grey squirrels in ‘pincer moment’ and ripping the vermin’s body to tiny bloody pieces of dead tree rat’

If they could of high five themselves afterwards they would have!

Private land so no chance of offending a vegan type with knitted trousers and wellie boots degrading as they walk😉

On a serious note I’m more concerned about the selfish tosser/s, that have extending dog leads, at full extension, along paths letting the dog do what it likes, whilst the lead is a trip wire for the unwary

I hate that on my early morning run

My 2 Jacks are always allowed off their leads.
When away last week in Henley we walked all along the Thames path and within a few feet of ducks and swans and they don’t even take any notice of them.
They will also avoid other dog.
Only time I have seen them attack anything was when Charlie my boy Jack got hold of a pigeon in our garden, Mrs CC was chasing him around the garden trying to save the pigeon😁
He did eventually after a few laps of the garden spit the pigeon out who then flew off😁😁

That’s really terrible…should have trained them to bring them back…squirrel burgers!!

I have no problem with your Grey squirrel extermination team, well done, just don’t walk them near the Reds 😄

No, they know That only ‘greys’ are legally classed as ‘vermin’ and should be destroyed

Quick trivia question, did you know that if you trapped a Grey Squirrel you must destroy it, it’s illegal to release vermin back into the environment

Depends on the where and what’s around, certainly not near livestock such as sheep etc. Some places around here mark out protected areas to protect wildlife such as ground nesting birds etc. Unlike our previous lurcher (rescue), thankfully our current lurcher (rescue, thought to be saluki/collie cross), lab and JR terrier don’t have high prey drives.

I think our dogs have even become desensitised to squirrels based on the growing community Cindy is supporting in the garden via her bird feeding exploits.

Nasty little things…stripped the electric cables in my barn, made a right mess.

You all know my opinion of dogs so won't comment on that, but just what is this hanging shit on trees all about?
Why bother picking it up in the first place just to leave it hanging in a tree, surely it would have been better and easier to just push it under the hedge with a stick.

That’s to catch the dog haters:- When your trying to flick dog shit off your shoes with a stick, the dog shit in the bag hangs above your head, patiently waiting for the biodegradable bag to give way making a bad day, worse!

Seriously, I agree though why bother at all if you don’t give a toss

Again this may be controversial and a question to why shouldn’t the wildlife trusts and conservationists have the same rights as farmers who can shoot a dog when it is worrying sheep why not when they are running wild over land where ground nesting birds etc are. All that is being asked is to keep a dog on a lead.

Gifts for the mythical poo fairy or a new genus of tree?
Apparently a minority of dog walkers park the poo for recovery on their return journey. Better still, just take it with you.

Ive nothing against them running free as such
But how do owners know where their dogs have defeacated?

I think they intend to collect it on return leg, but then "forget" 🤬

I spoke to a walker about that when I found a little bag of joy tied up and placed in the lane just in-front of my door…apparently the dog had done it’s bit, owner very rightly bagged it then she said she left it there so she could pick it up on the way back…she didn’t appear to realise how thoughtless she’d been.

i wasn’t too impressed and said it would have been better her just putting it in my bin, which was on the side of the lane about 3m away from said deposit.

I then made the point. Picked it up and threw it in the bin.

maybe the hedge bags are either…’a’, can’t be arsed so I’ll throw it in the hedge or ‘b’, I’ll hang it on a branch and I’ll see it and pick it up later. Either way, crap!

The land owner can already.

The PR for a wildlife trust, an animal charity shooting pet dogs would be catastrophic, and the burden of proof is on the shooter, dead blooded sheep, aborted lambs etc, irrefutable proof

Confronted by an angry dog owner pointing at an empty moorland with a dead dog in the middle saying “the dogs scared the birdies away’ is likely to get more wildlife trust staff battered around the head with their own shot guns

Conservationists? Shouldn’t be trusted with anything, let alone a shotgun in a public place

Perhaps a more effective approach would be to allow the trusts and conservationists to shoot irresponsible owners!

Double the pollution, shit and plastic.
