Defibrillators at Rallies Anyone.

Great idea, happy to contribute.

Happy to contribute and can make some heart related items for any fundraisers.

No, the whole idea is that anyone can use one, however basic life support training should go alongside as its cpr that keeps the brain oxygenated.

Not so sure.

The ones in public places maybe as they are only accessible with a code when you’re on the phone to emergency services and can be talked through what to do.

We have one at our rugby club and I know only nominated people who have received training are allowed to use it.

Brilliant idea and more than happy to contribute❤️

Great idea happy to chip in. Modern machines don’t let you shock the patient unless it’s correct to do so . It talks you through what to do and there are free courses run by heart start

You really do not need to worry about the details, the devices will only allow you to shock what is known as a shockable rythmn, usually VF. If you don't shock them and no one else does they will die, you have nothing to lose. The machine tells you exactly what to do provided you press the button to turn it on. You cannot overide the machine and shock by accident. All the chat on Casualty etc is about trying to change an unshockable into a shockable rythm.
Watch a video about CPR , the person is dead, you can't make them more dead, just make sure you are safe and call for help.
Happy to contribute, I have a variety of mouth pieces in my handbags as there aren't many of you who I want to do mouth to mouth on without a barrier!
Hadn't thought about buying my own device.

Great idea Jim, more than happy to contribute

Good idea, happy to contribute.

No good at some rallies as they are not to be used near water, at chester the whole site could have been shocked, however if it could save a life, then happy to contribute.

Just to confirm what has been said above.
You can't do any harm or injure the patient. If they have just collapsed and not in VF then the defib will not shock them. If you use it incorrectly then the patient will may not get the shock they need but as said, if you don't use it and they are in VF then they will die. If the heart has stopped completely then a shock from the defib won't do any good but the machine will tell you to start CPR.
There is no need to fear anything about using these machines, although training will ensure the best outcome they are designed for anyone to use.

New one on me if that was correct they would not be able to be used in damp weather !!

We organised fund raising via a charity I am chairman of and donated about 15 AED's they were Cardiac Science G3 & G5's all auto and direct from Cardiac Science, those that take charge of them need to have had or are prepared to have basic training in the use of the AED and CPR. we started our placement of AED's at events ( canine) after one of our competitors had a heart attack and died before the paramedic arrived and they could not get him back, we will never know if with an AED we could have saved him but at least we have AED's on site now. I would urge you to take action on this and I can offer advice sourcing one at an advantageous price

@Jim will you get one that starts m/h as well ray dilly dilly will it work on my willy :imoutahere:

Serious and sensible thread this one...

Will be happy to contribute... (y)

I'd forgotten about the mouthpieces. Always had them in first aid kits ( in care homes and in each vehicle) but no idea where mine went. Fortunately not had to resuscitate anyone for about 30 years.

They are cheap on eBay and Amazon so well worth it as it can get messy !!

Happy to chip in - just say how and when.

Happy to contribute. Excellent idea.
As for training, the ones we had at work talked you through what to do when you opened the lid.
Whilst there is an argument for some familiarisation with them, there is very little ‘training’ required. They won’t shock, regardless of what you may do, if it’s not required.
The good ones are expensive though.

Don’t think I’d want to trust my life to something from eBay/Amazon.
You’re not trusting your life to something from amazon or eBay , it’s just to make life a bit nicer for the person who is trying to save your like. Lots of them are approved by the Red Cross Association and the Heart Foundation so you don’t have to buy rubbish, I would certainly prefer to buy one where the one way valve would hopefully be reliable.

@Hettie's Crew - I think Carolyn was referring to the mouth pieces for ‘mouth to mouth’ resuscitation not defibrillator machines!!

There appears to be some concern that some training is required when using an AED and certainly it's no bad thing but the device will talk you through the procedure. Just remember if you do nothing the patient is dead, GUARANTEED, if you use an AED with or without training they may just survive.

At my last first aid at work update training ( which was 12 years ago !) I remember being told not to bother with mouth to mouth just do the compressions. I am sure you know more than me so perhaps I will get a mouthpiece or mouth guard to carry around with me again. I chucked the one I had.
Nice to meet you at Malvern by the way :)

I was told the same that compressions was more important as it kept the blood moving to the brain. When you stop to do the breaths it was not getting any blood to it.

The mouth to mouth bit really is very important indeed but some people really cant face doing it so chest compressions are better than nothing and some air does get sucked into the lungs as you release pressure but it won't keep people oxygenated for long at all. Also if there's a lot of facial trauma it can be challenging but if you can face it then proper CPR is best. Good to meet you too.

If you are trained then you can carry out rescue breaths, if not trained then the advice is chest compressions only.
