Hymer - possibly
We are buying a Hymer and are two weeks away from delivery. The dealer has just told us the fantastic news(their words) that they are increasing the price by 3k. Is this normal? We are buying it so our disabled son has a base when we’re out and about. We really want to get it for him but feel we’re being taken advantage of.

How Much!
I've only put £500 down and it's refundable. 10k is taking the pee, I've never put more than 1k down on a new van.
I said when you told me that it seemed uncommon .

Most of the folk I've seen on here ordering new vans have said they'd put deposits on and couldn't back out the deal

Obviously they don't know how to negotiate a deal. :giggle:

The top and bottom of it is that a lot of new motorhome buyers have more money than they know what to do with and three grand here and there is chicken feed, and dealers know very well they can get away with it so they can quote any price they like because they know they can put it up later.
But then someone who has committed every spare penny they have to it gets an unknown bill for something completely out of their control.
The whole thing stinks in my opinion.
Yes it's true. New vehicles being ordered in are apparently a bit of a nightmare if it's fiat based.
Mercedes and ford..not a problem So much. Sales guy (name not given) stated if we were to order the new burstner elegance it would be £185k. However..if it's on a fiat then it will possibly go up by at least another 8%. It's taking 12 months to get a new one from order to supplier. Then 2 months prior to you actually having it , and I quote. " you will be asked for the rest of the payment and advised on how much extra it will be to finalise the completed order In line with the rate of inflation at the time" !
Seriously thought he was taking the pee? However..he wasn't according to another sales man there.
Go European state the same. Their deposit is a little less..£7500 on any hew build!
My pockets just aren't that deep! 😕

So you agree with the concept of a dealer ripping someone off?
I accept that inevitably prices go up, I have not seen the OP’s contract so can’t comment on that, if you think that £3k rise in two years on what could be £100k or more van is a rip off ? Then yes actually I do.

Worse than that, Last year at Dusseldorf I witnessed people placing non refundable deposits that guaranteed them the van, but their deposit did not fix the price. They were agreeing to buy at the list price at time of delivery! over a year down the road! Crazy, but it was the only way to secure a new van from some makers.

I suppose if you have the disposable income and can afford to do that then good luck to them . But even the thought brings me out in a cold sweat.

I'm only 50 ....but if I was in my 70's I wouldn't buy green banana's never mind spend that money on a motorhome I had to wait nearly 2 years for lol.

Fair enough there maybe some layouts etc not available or have special needs but there's thousands of used vans out there for sale , I don't think I'd ever struggle to find something that would be 95% perfect

As I don't believe any van is ever 100% perfect for life

Obviously if you want a particular specification that may be the case. However it looks as if at the top end of the market £175k+ things are softening, you mentioned the Burstner Elegance and there are 12 new 2023 models for sale on Autotrader. It’s a similar story for Carthago, Mobilvetta (slightly cheaper), etc.

With a bit more thought, should they actually be selling these vans at all.
What else do you spend so much money on then have to wait up to two years, it's crazy that they don't actually know how much they are going to be, surely it's the same with the manufacturer, how can they sell something they havnt got, if they know it's going to take two years to make them why aren't they forward buying the stuff they need to make them, or even expanding so that it doesn't take two years.
The whole thing makes no sense to me.
It's like the new electric Ford RangeRover lookalike. Pre-orders can be placed now. For what? a car that's neither built nor tested!
No way, if I couldn't collect it next week after deliver checks I'd go somewhere else.

That’s right Jim and those same vans will be even more money next year, most likely 😏

Don’t post a lot on here now I know why. I once got banned for six month for sticking up for someone could have chosen my wording better. But Come on to fk there’s a bit of up your own arse and snobbery saying ten year old vans are bangers.
Mine must be completley knackered then.
It's 23 years old and still going strong with 45k on the clock and in better nick than some 10 yeR old vans, and is most definitely better built, using proper wood and quality mastic sealants.
Nuff said!

Mines only 15 year old but done 280000 miles, I genuinely wouldn't swap it for any brand new motorhome never mind what it costs.

A guy at work put his name down for a Lotus sports car, which had quite a waiting list for them. He never received the car, because the dealer contacted him and bought it off him before it had even been deliverd, I think the lad made about £12k in just over a year ?
If I thought that was guaranteed I'd order 1 every 6 months but eventually they would stop offering and I'd end up with a silly car that your bum is way too close to the ground

Yeah obviously if it was just a matter of making money , fair enough but to actually use ,I wouldn't beg one.

I can attest to the quality of Carthago interiors! 😃 ... I've been having to do a good 20-30 mins of fly swatting most nights as they are a real nuisance and Bella, whilst during the day will happily chase them, is terrified of them in the night.
I've got through 3 fly swatters (they're crap!) and had to sellotape 2 together to make a usable one. Despite me having to whack the little sods quite hard (I'm sure they are armour plated) none of the cabinetry etc has dented or marked. I know full well that if we still had some of our previous MHs every whack would have left a mark as I don't 'pull my punches' ... Saying that I've invented a new sport ... fly punching! 😆 The few that don't get squished often make the mistake of trying to snuggle up to me in bed and I soon punch their lights out ... It's surprisingly rewarding! 😄

Try buying a boat!

You pay a third up front, another third when they start to build it and you pay the balance, what ever that final invoice when it’s finished, before you get it.

I had to insure it while they were building it as I legally ’owned’ it.

Something else I’d hankered after for a good few years having needed to sell one many years ago had a three year waiting list, worse, the dealership wouldn’t add anyone to their waiting list.

I managed to find one brand new but paid 20% over the suggest retail price!

But! Had I waited the three years, I would have still paid out more now than I did, and mine is worth more than I paid for it and at the ancient age 60 (😉 Northernraider) I value time as a commodity along with money
