Covid-wise, how are things back in UK?

no one except us washes their hands, wipes the trolly down or wears masks in supermarkets

I'm liking the disinfection of supermarket trolley handles. I make use of the spray every time. Not because of covid, more about the nations penchant for nose picking while driving to the supermarket. '\

Doctor’s surgery and local hospital in Ciren have dropped the ‘must wear a face covering/mask’ edict this week, as cases are falling……..
Whereas I have an appointment at GWH in Swindon next week and have been told I must wear a mask while inside the hospital buildings. My local GP surgery also still requires masks to be worn.

Living with it doesn’t mean throwing caution to the wind. The government has stopped collecting stats which is not helpful.

For those interested in science https://health-study.joinzoe.com/data#levels-over-time
Why do you think that? The app'coronavirus.data.gov.uk' still posts all the daily data, though very few people bother to look anymore ( just checked for the first time in months after reading this post!).
ONS still do their big survey and the health statisticians are still working away but with far less publicity (my stepson is one so I know for sure)

Active cases are up in Wiltshire today by 1833 to around 19000 cases 😥

We had to cut short our 3-week exploration of Yorkshire last Monday because of a visit from the Covid Fairy in Wensleydale. I've had worse bouts of flu. In fact, I described Covid as Eric Morecambe Flu. "All the right symptoms but not necessarily in the right order, sunbeam." :D
The problem is that most people have mild symptoms with the current variants, but some are still getting very ill. A local friend who had it in November (while her husband, who she was away with in their MH when she first had symptoms, never got it), is still unwell now with long covid, seven months later. It has seriously negatively affected her business (she's a sole trader).
I'm a sole trader, and am most wary of catching it because of the potential impact on my business. That said, I am largely getting out and about as pre-Covid times now, but am still avoiding overly busy closed in places and am uncomfortable where I'm with too many people in close proximity.

Scotland is like a Petri dish at the moment, with Covid at 1 in 20
Hardly surprising if the more transmissible variant is in circulation. My daughter is working in hospitality in the Highlands for the summer and three of her co-workers are positive - and still at work.

I'm 54, in cohort 4 for immunosuppression and have a low platelet count which has required long needles into my bone marrow, had the original virus back in March 2020 and recently had a dose of BA.4. I've also had 4 vaccinations - 3 primary & 1 booster.

I just add Covid to the long list of viral & bacterial infections which could do for me on any given day and get on with life as I only have one and refuse to waste any of it waiting for something which one day will inevitably happen anyway.

Buried my father at 56, my daughter at 3 and my first wife at 42.

Take sensible precautions but don't let anything like Covid hang over you like the sword of Damocles. It's here now forever.

Life is very short and needs to be lived, there are no second chances.

Since 2020 and taking precautions like regular hand washing and mask wearing neither of us has had a cough, cold or a sniffle of any sort...Will carry on just as we have for the last two and a half years,,BUSBY.

I wasn’t trying to minimise the problem as I’m well aware that Covid can make people very ill and in some cases kill them or bring on an early death but I think it’s important to understand the data reported.

i was just pointing out that my Mother in law is shown on the stats as ‘died with Covid’ because she died within 28 days of a positive test. However when she was in hospital a few weeks before with a chest infection the consultant wanted to stop her meds saying that she had, at the most, a couple of months left.

As for the variants I’m sure Ive seen on the news that there are 2 more variants with a higher transmission rate (one originating inSouth Africa.
From the perception of someone reading your post you started off by saying its about balance, then went on to minimise the deaths figures by saying that they were "people who died with covid, not of it" you used the example of your mother in law to prove this point. I think we all know that the figures include people who died "with" covid but neither you nor me know how many died with covid versus of covid so from the readers perspective you were making a point that you wanted others to believe.

I came down with symptoms yesterday, 2 days after returning from Greece on an aircraft. Headache, blocked nose, feeling weak. I've had my jabs. We just have to put up with it.
Dont people test any more.......?

Just wait until Glasto has finished, it will be interesting to see what effect that has🤔
My granddaughter and her partner have been there all week. They recovered from covid just two weeks before they went, it will be a good test to see how much immunity having the virus leaves you with.

I heard recently that having the latest Covid variants as opposed to the previous Corona A and B gives you no future protection at all against catching it again.

And a problem highlighted. Scotland principally a service industry for those on holiday just now. Younger demographic fulfilling those relatively poorly paid roles can't afford to loose pay by being off work sick. So the problem is exacerbated.

Noticed report today that Cambridge hospitals are reinstating mask wearing for all because of rise in cases.
It would be interesting to know if what appears to be rise post bank holiday was crowded outdoor areas or increasing socialising indoors, given general belief is that outdoors is much safer.
we do need to improve ventilation in a lot of buildings including schools and colleges, and a lot of offices if there are to be many people working in them. Would help not just for covid but other infections as well.
Just had an e mail from DiabetesUK with info about metformin, which is a med used by many diabetics, especially type 2. Apparently it gives some protection against severe covid and can also help recovery.

WHO official says the more times a person gets COVID-19, the more likely they are to be 'unlucky' and get long COVID

A World Health Organization official said on Monday that the more times a person becomes infected with COVID-19, the more likely the person is to be "unlucky" and contract long-term health effects from the coronavirus.

"The more times you get it, the more likely you are to be unlucky and end up with long COVID — which is the thing that none of us want because it can be so serious," David Nabarro, a WHO special envoy for COVID-19, told Sky News.

He continued: "It can knock people off their stride for several months."

Long COVID happens when someone with COVID-19 develops symptoms that linger for an extended period, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says symptoms could last weeks or months, and even go and come back.

'Let's be careful out there'

I'm still surprised at the amount of men who don't wash their hands when using motorway services toilets.

Hospitals in Scotland still insisting in masks for everyone. OH was in day surgery this morning and somehow a positive covid case was brought in from
A&E. Once they’d removed him they took down the curtains in that cubicle plus 2 adjacent ones, and disinfected seats and all hard surfaces.
Ironically, they didn’t test the other day patients.

Went to give platelets last week at blood centre. All precautions stopped that week.
No masks seats back in rows, no sanitizer or temperature check so something has changed!

Still have hand sanitizers in my vehicles plus Mrs CC has some in her bag so every time we go in or out somewhere we do our hands.

Surprising how many places do not now have any hand gell in their premises☹️☹️
I still think hand cleaning is pretty much a waste of time as far as avoiding a respiratory infection is concerned and largely promoted as we were short of masks in the first wave

Hand cleaning is never a waste of time, at the beginning of the pandemic a lot was needed to be learned as how the virus 🦠 was transmitted.

Anything you do is better than doing nothing and like others haven’t had flu or cold for 2 years so doing something right😁

It's all over in UK,France and Spain as far as I can see.Must be because no one except us washes their hands, wipes the trolly down or wears masks in supermarkets,,BUSBY.
Masks are still compulsory on public transport in Italy. We saw people without masks refused entry to the vaparreto in Venice. And also a lot of voluntary mask wearers in supermarkets.

Same here in Harrogate, door guardians with masks & sanitiser. They won't allow you in with a cloth face covering even if you have an appointment.

does anybody really believe that we should continue to maintain the precautions and levels of vigilance that we did throughout the worst times of the pandemic?
Yes. I don't want your cold or flu either.
’ve had covid and to me it was just like a cold. I
As above I don't want a sick note anywhere near me.
Covid colds or flu and going to work? Wthe f is that all about?

In Spain the classroom and offices windows still all have to be wide open.

Appointment for blood test at hospital tomorrow. Mask, gloves ,96° alcohol to wash in . Then hibernate in van until Wednesdays Appointment.
