Cost of Motorhome Habitation Checks

Unless you are confident working with gas I would not recommend using one, do you have a BBQ point? If so it is safe to use that as you do not have to break the gas line. You will need a manometer that can read a minimum of 36mb or an electronic guage, but to be useful the electronic one would need to be calibrated.
I do have a manometer that I bought for my house boiler. I also have an external BBQ point. I guess I just connect it up and make sure the level remains constant over quite a long time period?

I bought this a few years back for checking my logs but equally good on the motorhome. It's given me exactly the same readings as my engineer's damp check last Friday.

You really don't want to use that type in a Motorhome. You need the non-invasive type, not only no pins to damage the Motorhome they also measure to a greater depth.

£620 for a habitation check, wow that’s pinching money.
How can they justify that?
I don't think they would even bother trying. The Smove is not a big 'van and that price is absurd.

Hi you mentioned low mileage, what is their interpretation of low mileage, just asking as I am due to pick up my new auto trail In February, and on average we only do 5000 a year.
Thanks in advance

Subjective really, but 5000 miles a years would fall in the low mileage bracket. First year we had our van, due to obvious reasons, we only did 3500 miles. We had a service after 12 months in line with Fiat recommendations in the owners manual.👍

I simply use a water manometer - convert pressure to inches of water.

That sounds more like something to do with a base service when they've had the wheels off and it is probably good practice to re-check the nuts are still tightened properly ... having had a wheel nearly come off a caravan once when I was towing it (hubby had been sorting the brakes and forgotten to tighten the nuts up fully) and one had gone awol and the others were only just holding, I know only too well how frightening having loose nuts can be.
Loose nuts can be painful,,,😄😄BUSBY.

Phoned and booked my damp check this morning with Southdowns. I had a full cab check done the year before last as I had only had the van about six months but have skipped the hab check subsequently. It's going to be expensive enough as it is with a new set of tyres at 7 years old this time round.
Sorry but what's a Cab Check,,never heard of that,,BUSBY.

Just had my Habitation Check (with dampness check) on my Motorhome at Knowepark Caravans and Motorhomes, Livingston, Scotland today. Cost £210.

I think he suffered from F F S ....

Those are rip off prices, see what Reliance want as they are authorised for N & B warranty work, could be worth a short holiday down south.
The thing is my recently purchased 2018 smove from travelworld started leaking very badly 4 months after purchasing , they tried and failed to fix it so I contacted niesmann personally, They made another attempt to fix it and it is now back in to have the water damage repaired.
This has all taken 12 months
They told me I need to pay for a damp check as the warranty will be invalid going forward as it is passed the date for the inspection
Now I would have thought a damp check would be included in the repair 🤔
You couldn’t have damp checked it when the inspection was needed as it was visibly damp was wet to touch.
A distressing event on an otherwise lovely MH
Im awaiting an answer as to wether niesmann will pay travelworld will carry out the damp test.

That’s disgraceful as well, hopefully with construction of a niesmann it shouldn’t have done any damage. Aluminium inside and out do difficult to damp check.

The pressure of lpg is higher than nat gas so a larger manometer is needed, also there is a test procedure, not just connecting a guage

How was the water getting in?

My fingers make Twiggy look like an obesity patient, I'll have you know. It's the software that thinks it knows better than me.
When I posted earlier and wrote F F S without the spaces it changed it to Oh Please! ... obviously thought I meant something naughty!!!

How was the water getting in?
They originally told me round the sog pipe , I pointed out it was wet over the habitation door , they said the water had travelled.
They sealed around the pipe but the next time it rained it was soaking again over the door. Took it back and they have now said it’s a seam above the door and they have fixed it. It is back with them now and they are replacing the panel above the door. As d as n end cupboard panel which are water damaged.
They now want me to pay for a damp check ad it is overdue for the Damp warranty. 😱

Strange, I didn't think German vans leaked '\

Water can travel in weird ways once inside the van. An RV owner I know had a leak around a marker light midway along his 32ft van; but somehow the water ran and rotted timber in the rear nearside corner about 8ft away from the leak.

Hopefully your door is the source and they've sorted it. (y)

£140 at an approved workshop.

Speaking from related experience; water can, and will travel horizontally in many and various ways, tracking along electric cables is a favourite route, it also rots the copper strands so they fair in time and become very hard to locate.

On the habitation check question; Or first MH, a Hymer, was bought from a small dealer in Torbay, and came with a full HABCHECK. We used it and enjoyed it for some months, but Annie was continually complaining of a smell of gas. I have absolutely no sense of smell, so put it down to the close location of the fridge air inlet, and the water heater exhaust. However, after about six months we took the van to Tamar Towing to have an external BBQ point fitted, and asked for a gas check in the process. Imagine our shock when the technician said that he could only stay in the van for about two minutes at a time due to the smell. It transpired that the fridge flue was corroded almost to non existence, and we could have both died.

When confronted, the dealer offered the next MOT for free! as compensation. We did not accept the offer.

Last year I paid 150 pounds for my habitation service I have used him for the past 4 years and
Warranty work was carried out for the first 3 years
by the Chausson dealer , as long as the engineer
Is qualified and approved It's not a problem

Sunlight insist on a Sunlight Dealer doing any Habitation checks (not just damp like some) during the 3 year Habitation warranty period. The dealer I purchased the van off increased it to 5 years…….but same conditions…..so that can go in the bin.

The Dealer also increased the Fiat side from two to 5 years, but the conditions imposed for years 3, 4 and 5 make it not worth the paper it’s written on.

I won’t be paying my local(ish) Sunlight dealer £225, for a Hab check, next year for sure.

I know people will say, ‘They can’t do that’. But they do, and life’s too short to argue the point.👍
