Cost of Motorhome Habitation Checks

Our globecar this year £220 at SMC, where we bought it from.
Incidentally our previous auto sleeper, bought from Derby Motorhomes, was hab checked by SMC. The van had to go into them for a Ducato recall. Derby motorhomes don’t do the fiat bit, and SMC we’re our nearest. First time we had dealt with SMC other than looking round vans. When we went to pick it up they reminded us when our hab check was due, and I queried about warranty work if needed. They said they would do it, no problems. We didn’t need any doing so didn’t test out that assertion. Certainly more convenient to us.

I paid £130 last November for A class mobile guy Very good used him since 2018 don’t know price for this year yet

From my local dealership:

'TotalServe' service

Our manufacturer approved standard service includes standard service parts, dynamic wheel balancing, labour and VAT.

TotalServe - habitation service £255
ValueServe - habitation service £180
TotalServe - habitation service 3 year plan £605
Cab - warranty from £285
Cab - non warranty from £230
Cab & habitation from £460

Interpret that however you like.

Phoned and booked my damp check this morning with Southdowns. I had a full cab check done the year before last as I had only had the van about six months but have skipped the hab check subsequently. It's going to be expensive enough as it is with a new set of tyres at 7 years old this time round.

How much to Southdowns charge?

Marquis Plymouth
September £244.99
Had to do Hab Check to keep Warrenty

That is cheap for the damp, do they do a full water check like Reliance?
No idea. Drop the van off and come back later to "All done sir, no problems". They may just dust the cooker top with a rag for all I know. I have thought about going out to Reliance but it is a bit further and in the middle of nowhere so I can't while away my time browsing round PC World.

We have our Knaus booked in for a damp check next month at a cost of £140, we have to use a Knaus approved dealer as they have to use a certain spray and place a sticker from the can into our book.

Carthago habitation and leak inspection service is £399inc vat and certificate, our premium mechanical service is £449inc vat.
I've booked in at Camper UK in January at these rates. I wasn't happy with the service I had last January for hab and mechanical servicing. I thought Camper UK have a good reputation and will do it well.
So £1080 if there's nothing wrong at all?

I think Reliance charge £180 that is why I thought £90 was cheap.

Camper UK do damp only for just under £170 but the waiting time is 12-14 weeks!

First Hab check for ours was September 2021……tried booking it into the supplying dealer (Cara) in the June of 2021…..couldn’t fit it in until October at the earliest.🤦‍♂️

Rang a local(ish) Sunlight Dealer, Southwest Motorhomes in Ilminster, 3 weeks waiting (at the time) for Hab checks so booked in easily for September 2021. I just booked this years whilst I was there.

Won’t be doing dealership checks from now on though…..now all my warranty stuff is done.👍

Seems dealerships are doing okay on the Hab check front.

I have used an approved mobile engineer and paid about £160.

I'm writing a beginners article about Habitation checks. Whats the going rate for a check at the moment, dealers and independents? Cheers
Good timing.

We have always had a good relationship with our dealer but this year they have in our opinion pushed the prices too far.

2021 hab check was £150. Ok for a what is a fairly simple check and keeps the warranty going.

This year its now £300 also only had a full service done in January. Less than 5000 miles this year and the service is every 2 years. But they the dealer recommend a minor service at the time of the cab check just to make sure everything is ok.

Well they would wouldn't they as its only £350. So a total added cost of £650. Also 100 miles round trip.

I agreed with "The computer said no"

Local mobile approved engineer. £150 Came to the house. Excellent job.

He even filled in the damp form with numbers for different areas unlike the dealer who took the money and gave us a blank paper other than had check done. money for old rope as they used to say.

He's already booked for next year.

Fiat recommends a minor service if you do low mileage, and not to wait two years. We paid £227 in year one, for what was nothing more than an oil change. £335 for a two year Service September just gone.

Looking for a local mobile company to do gas and electric checks next year, but can’t find a decent independent to do the cab side…..so stuck with Fiat Professional at the moment.

I've attached a copy of the check sheet for damp/leaks which Carthago dealers use for anyone who's interested:

Hi Jim,
Our hab check this year was £185 (for a long wheelbase Swift Select 184) - includes dampness checks. Local independent small company that provide excellent service. A few years back we were quoted over £300 by the local big dealer. They didn't want to be bothered with us because we hadn't bought from them. They also made things as difficult as possible for the independent company because they didn't like a better, cheaper service on what they consider their 'patch'. Luckily he has a loyal, appreciative, customer base so has plenty of work.

We use a CCC approved mobile guy from Worthing that charges £150 for a complete check
When you have damp check through Carthago approved/dealer part of the charge around £120 +vat is Carthago sticker which I believe costs dealer £60 and is in effect an insurance. The damp check is registered online with Carthago.

Highbridge do not carry out this themselves they have a independent chap who comes to do a day or days at at a time.
Interesting - I didn't know that. Although in the past I've had a number of habitation services done there, not used them for a year or two now.

Check out Habcheck. Cost me £220 paid monthly and they come to you. Checked under slung tanks and pipes, electrical systems, gas system, water systems, ventilation, fire and safety, and bodywork including a damp check. Provide details of earth bonding on chassis and gas system, RCD trip times, battery charge info, and tests the smoke and CO2 detectors. Independent engineers - chap called Alan Marsh does mine and gives me peace of mind.
Who was that please!
