I'm writing a beginners article about Habitation checks. Whats the going rate for a check at the moment, dealers and independents? Cheers

I was just quoted £279 this morning... not sure if that is good or bad, I have no previous experience

Might be worth mentioning in the article that readers might want to consider just instructing the dealer to carry out a damp check .Personally I don't like paying for someone to tell me everything is working.

Last year l took a 3 year habitation deal for the equivalent of £185/ year. Its currently £250.

£300 at Chausson dealer this year, required to maintain warranty. Started at £175 in 2020 increased to £225 in 2021.

Dealer taking full advantage of Chausson requirement for hab service by supplying dealer to maintain water ingress warranty for first 5 years.

We've just had our annual gas and water tightness/integrity check (for warranty) done at a main dealer. Total price was £189.00 incl. VAT. From memory roughly equally priced for each. Hope this helps.

Just to add, the dealer was clear that a fully habi check is not required by our manufacturer to maintain warranty. Only the Water Ingress check.

Never had a hab check but a damp check at my local Burstner dealer that i needed doing for the warranty was £100

We paid £125 last March. That was with a mobile technician coming to our home. (NCC Approved Workshop)

Edit: That was a hab and damp check.

Check out Habcheck. Cost me £220 paid monthly and they come to you. Checked under slung tanks and pipes, electrical systems, gas system, water systems, ventilation, fire and safety, and bodywork including a damp check. Provide details of earth bonding on chassis and gas system, RCD trip times, battery charge info, and tests the smoke and CO2 detectors. Independent engineers - chap called Alan Marsh does mine and gives me peace of mind.

Not sure of the rates now but when we bought our Carthago we negotiated the first hab check as part of the deal with would have been around £380 if we'd had to pay for it (included the damp check). The damp check we had last year was £145 I think and consisted of giving the MH a good soaking and checking for leaks as due to it being aluminium skinned they can't use a meter.

We debated about having it done this year, due in October, but decided not to bother as apart form the cost of the check it would be expensive to go to/from the dealer. We considered getting it done abroad but probably won't bother, obviously means we don't now have a water ingress warranty but the likelihood of issues on a Carthago are very, very small.

One consideration of course is whether you need to have it done for warranty purposes or not and if so what specifically is needed, as this will determine where you can go/should go for it.

Damp meters available on ebay 🙄
Cheers🍻

Most German vans don't need a damp hab check for the warranty just a damp check, I pay €70 (£60)for a damp check at our Belgium dealer, UK price varies between £130 to £270.

I know of someone with a Liner who has had problems with the floor due to a window frame seal leaking. Carthago have shipped the van back to the factory to remove the sides to do the repair. The van is 9 years old.

Turriff Caravan Centre £230 for a A class

We use a CCC approved mobile guy from Worthing that charges £150 for a complete check

Paid £175 for mine last month on a just 3-year-old van at a recognised Auto trail agent (the previous 2 years cost the same). They do any repair work if required and sort everything out paperwise etc under warranty from Autotrail. (A and E Leisure Northwich)
A nearer Autotrail main dealer closer to home will do the habitation check for £200, however will not do the warranty work if required as I didn't buy the van from them originally.

I was quote the attached by the Erwin Hymer on our B 778 PL. It did not include a damp check.

I had the check done by a local mobile guy which included a damp check for 180.00.

South West Motorhomes, Ilminster. September 2022, £225.

Sunlight insist on Sunlight Dealers doing the Habitation checks to maintain the warranty. Needed a job doing, so had it done there……won’t be bothering in future. I’ll get a local mobile guy to come to the house to check the electrical systems and gas.👍

Last time I used Spinney it was £150 +vat for club members and £180 + vat non members. Includes hab and damp checks

Full habitation check by mobile NCC approved service agent £160 a couple of weeks ago. Done on drive or he would come to storage site. Damp check with ultrasonic meter, gas pressure check and electrical insulation test.

Our dealer's charge is about £225. Would be cheaper with our local mobile guy, but not sure if his business survived covid.

Not wanting to teach my granny (grandad?) to suck eggs, but you might consider advising beginners that the gas checks are only a safety check, i.e. no maintenance is involved. Might come as a bit of a surprise if 3+ years down the line burners get clogged up etc.
