I sold my UK registered motorhome yesterday. The new owner arranged his insurance so I phoned Comfort Insurance today to cancel the policy which does not expire until mid August.
I was informed that the policy is underwritten by LV and as the policy had been in force for over 120 days there would be NO REFUND!
I was told there is no appeal to this ripoff, under the term and conditions there will be no refund! (Pease no smart aleck comments about how I should have read umpteen pages of fine print)
Anyone considering taking out insurance with Comfort should be aware and clarify with them this 120 day no refund rule.

I had the same thing happen. Sold last van end of August 23, new one being collected beginning of March.

NFU. Are different they cancel and refund the difference or if you pay monthly (0%) they stop the DD I’m forever changing playthings and it’s not a problem no charge for changing things also. 🌟👍🥃

Comfort underwriters are Aviva are you sure it is Comfort

From Comfort's policy:
Alternatively, if you wish to cancel and the insurance cover has already commenced, you will be entitled to a refund
of the premium paid, less a proportionate deduction for the time we have provided cover. Comfort Insurance will
also charge a fee of £30.00 to cover our administrative costs (plus Insurance Premium Tax, where applicable).

likewise been with them for years .. they always refund any outstanding monies when you change or cancel.. and as you say.. no charge when doing so

Probably easier if you pay monthly, could then stop the DD?

It always used top be you lost 5 months even if you cancelled the next day. It is far better in the UK now than it was years ago.

Cancelling this policy
3. (a) Your right to cancel
Following the expiry of your 14 day statutory cooling off period, you continue to have the right to cancel this policy and/or any additional cover options provided by us at any time during its term. If you do so, you will be entitled to a refund of the premium paid in respect of the cancelled cover, less a proportionate deduction for the time we have provided such cover.
It is drawn to your attention that short period premium rates will apply during the first year of your policy, on the basis of the table shown below:
Percentage of annual
Period not exceeding
One month
premium charged
25%
Two months 30%
Three months 40%
Four months 50%
Five months 60%
Six months 70%
Seven months 80%
Eight months 90%
Over eight months 100%
If you decide to cancel after the first year of your policy you will be entitled to a refund of the premium paid,
subject to a deduction for the time for which you have been covered. This will be calculated on a proportionate basis for the period for which you received cover, and Comfort Insurance will also charge a fee of £30.00 if the policy is cancelled within the 14 day cooling off period or £35.00 thereafter to cover our administrative costs (plus Insurance Premium Tax, where applicable).

You start to wonder how many layers of brokerage you pay for in the premium. Comfort is a brokerage; the underwriter used to be Aviva. I have my car insured with LV, and it turns out that LV is acting as a broker for another insurance company that underwrites the policy. I wonder if it is being reinsured elsewhere to lay off the risk. Who is actually at the end of this chain when it comes to liability for a claim? There can be a claims handling outfit that also takes a cut.

Everybody gets their slice. We are treated as mugs, to be rinsed. No wonder our premiums are soaring.

I have seen that before but couldn't find it when I looked.
That doesn't tie up with the OP post he should only be paying 50 or 60% so I don't think he is with Comfort.

I had the same problem with AIB, sold the van last Sept and phoned insurance company to get refund, only to be told 'Sorry no can do but we will freeze the policy'.
Phoned up last week to start new policy for March only to be told £50 fee to do so, not happy but okay, 'When do you want policy to start?' '2nd March' said I, 'Your policy expires on the 3rd March' 'No I suspended the policy in September as you would not refund the premium so I should have six months insurance to run' 'No you don't we told the insurance company that you didn't have the van but the policy has continued!'
Needless to say someone else now has my custom!

Just checked my Comfort policy and it’s underwritten by Aviva, and refunds are proportional to the days used.
Just a thought Is there something different here with your policy as you are based outside UK?

When I had a claim with Comfort recently I phoned the claim line. It was answered by Aviva the underwriters who dealt with the claim themselves very efficiently

Sounds like the OP needs to get back on the phone and kick off a bit!!

Comfort brockeridge mainly uses Aviva but not exclusively. A call to them a few months ago when I was looking to park my van on the road fora couple of months whilst I has work on my drive indicated that wasn't possible with Aviva but they could quote from other insurers. The quotes were excessive, so I didn't proceed but shows they are not just Aviva so LV may have been an option.

Check because when I sold my old van I had a refund and I was into the seventh month of the policy and didn’t find another van for four months. Always had great service off Comfort even when I had an accident in Portugal they were brilliant

I had classic car insurance that was similar no refund on cancellation after the original cooling off period but it was clearly stated up front on the comparison site. It was so cheap compared to other quotes that I chose it anyway. A pro rate refund would sound very generous given the admin advertising staffing costs.

I've been with Comfort for 13 years always found them good had a claim about 10 years ago, no increase in premium after.
But yesterday I phoned them for an idea on the cost of the new van due in a few months looks like I won't be using them. They wanted £1000 and a tracker & alarm fitted before it leaves the dealer.

I got a fortnight's grace with them for fitting the tracker to a new van.
