Christmas in Spain (or Portugal?)

We have often been to Spain and Portugal in the motorhome in the spring and autumn. But now we have made a late decision to go to Spain or Portugal or both for Christmas. We will take the tunnel and drive down through France using Tonka's Western winter route. Leaving about 8 December and returning home in late January, so about 6 weeks away. But we need some advice about how to get the best out of the time we are there from you funsters who have done it before.

Firstly we would like the weather to be as warm as possible, so what are the best areas for that? And what temperatures could we expect please?

We like to tour around rather than staying a long time in one place. But I suspect we will want to stop in one place just before Christmas and then stay to see the new year in. I understand that Spain has lots of parades on 6 January, so would like to experience that too. We don't mind campsites, camper stops or a bit of wilding. But, as usual we have not booked anything. Will we be able to find places easily or will there be no room in the inn?

Looking at the 2022 ACSI Discount book a lot of the sites are offering discounted rates up until the new year and after, which normally means they will probably have space for turn-ups. Any suggestions please of places along the coast from Valencia all the way to the Portuguese border, as I guess inland would be too cold for us. If there are some funsters to meet up with that would be good too.

Another option could be Portugal, which we love. What will the weather be like there please? I suspect we would have to stick to the Algarve to get the warmer weather. Are the camper stops along the coast full at this time of year? And how do the Portuguese celebrate Christmas?

Many thanks for any help you can give us.
Hi Chris & Debs,

We are heading to Spain on Boxing Day taking the same route down from Calais...It would be nice to catch up in Spain..Keep us posted.. Have a safe trip..

Ray & Linda.

Hope the weather this winter is better than last, and all of you "Snowbirds" have a great time on your chosen site destinations, send us some pictures and make us envious when you get there.(y)
We have never been to Spain in the van, I spend far too long scrolling along roads on Google Earth, like I did just now, when I found a car park in Roquetas de Mar (see image below)
If this is how the wild campers park up, with all their bikes out, chairs and tables, probably staying until they get moved on, then it wont take long before it becomes like Portugal. People as in the photo are taking the P and are ruining it for themselves for future returns and everyone else...they obviously don't give a jot!
LES

It will be difficult to be much worse that this Feb/Mar Les. I am trying again, hope I’m not a glutton for punishment. 🤷‍♂️

Many years ago we wintered for a while somewhere, but where. Most likely by the Med. A spacious flat site shaded by pines and palms, quiet, and I "think" we could walk through to a beach. A playa perhaps.

The one Lenny is referring to Cap Blanche at Altea/Albir
Yeah I know but if you carry on a bit further up there's one called San Antonio which is open, no shade and is walled, although I'm not sure if they still can see over the wall? I think it's classed as being in Altea although still on the sea front just up from Cap Blanch

The further south you go the warmer it tends to be, as much as 5 degrees difference, we are heading to Portugal and then along the northern Spanish coastline starting very early January for approx 50 nights, personally Benidorm isn’t for us, but everyone is different so enjoy if you do go there

There is a new camper stop in Finistrat just next to benidorm. 12€ a night when we stayed in October. Walking distance(10 minutes) to beach and lots of bars and restaurants. It has showers and toilets and we were able to put chairs and tables out. We booked in advance as we're meeting friends who were staying in a hotel nearby.

Try 15/20!
Northern Spain is cold In winter!
What I meant was the further south along the coast even from where we live near Alicante it gets warmer as we head south, fully aware the north is colder

I think Just smiffy has a season ticket for this site 😂

Yes I’ve been there a few times over winter, it’s ok but nothing special…. good location and the reason I go there is that it’s nearly the only site there and the town of Albir is great, I’ve got some good friends in the town. no high rise like Benidorm but just as cheep a bit more Spanish and beni is only a 20 min bus ride on the no10 for €2 if you want some frills although there are plenty of bars and good restaurants in Albir and a Sunday market….😎

The wazzock that owns that site previously ran a site at La Marina.
We rang him thinking we were booking at La Marina and he accepted our booking.

Of course, when we got there the new management knew nothing and the camperstop was full.

There were several campers at La Marina wondering how the air around our van turned blue that day.

I had to post an entry on S4S to assist others in not making the same error.

Do you have coordinates or link please. Can't find it on CamperContact

You ask, we provide.
N38.533438 W0.174908

Area (Aire) Camperalia, Carrer Beniarres, 03509 Finestrat,

I'd give you a phone number but I cant promise it's the right one!

It's not the same one as Emmit has quoted. On search for sites look near benidorm and sunpark Finistrat.
Doesn't find it surprisingly if you search in Finistrat.

Sorry sun beach camperpark don't know how it deleted half.
I emailed them and when we got there a traffic cone with a label were reserving our pitch. It's right next door to Leroy Merlin but no noise when we were there

Confused dot Com

What isn't the same as the one I posted? Does that mean there's two of them?

Anybody used San Antonio Camper Park in Altea? If so what was it like please?
Walked by it, looks OK pitches a reasonable size.
The beach is not accessible, rocks piled up for sea defense where as Cap Blanch has a nice sandy beach.

Appears the one Emmit posted is new and will open in December. Coordinates are very similar so I assume is close to the one i stayed at.

Don't know why but the coordinates on s4s don't match for either site. Where did Emmit get yours from?
Dennis

We are thinking about a later arrival next year, so maybe going to Morocco from 2 nd week November 2023 till after New Year 2024 then off to Bonterra for a couple of months but a lot can change by then.
Exactly, my favourite word is “hopefully”
