Changing MOT rules proposed by Transport Minister

Young lad I know took his car to an MOT centre earlier this month. Failed with an estimate of £1200 to fix stuff that will ensure a pass. I booked it in to my local garage, said nothing to them, it passed, total bill, £90 which included a new tyre.

I wonder how many peple are ripped off like this each year.
 
That, in my opinion, will make it worse.
It needs picking up and shaking vigorously.
Ensure all staff actually know what's expected of them and learn about DVLA requirements.....not just tick boxes.
I reckon half the staff don't even know they work for DVLA
Not sure how ditching MOTs would affect them but DVLA has been hopeless for years.
The time it worked best was when there were local offices. Its much harder to shove something in a drawer when the applicant is stood there.
 
I maintain my own mazda mx-5.

I had an offer from Halfords for a free MOT last summer, so took it in, expecting the hard sell. Met a lovely garage manager. No work required.

Of course the easiest way for HMG to reduce the costs for all would be to reduce some of their take, almost 60p/litreand then vat on top of all of it so at £1.70/litre the net oil cost is 82p- slightly less than half.
 
I do find these government initiatives very odd indeed, like the VAT drop - made FA difference to joe public, but costs millions to the government. This is another crazy idea but this time those that suffer are drivers that kill them selves and other because they don’t look after their vehicle and the MOT test centres. If people can’t afford £50 a year, they can’t afford to run a car…

I thought that was the idea of their computer system etc, so they can see if and where it had been done before and what it had failed on before. Wouldn’t they then know what the other garage had said

Well if they knew, they never said.

Even if they could they could easily have another look and make their own judgement. If the first garage regularly gets up to tricks like that they will probably be aware of them. Crap way to do business but used to happen a lot with cheap offers
 
The small garage is under great pressure in many ways, none more so than in the field of MOTs .
With Halfords purchase of National Tyres I see an even greater pressure being placed on the independent garage.
The unit cost of MOT upgraded technology is disproportionate compared with the purchasing power and influence of a large group, I have seen this in the high street for many years as no doubt others have also.
The two year test has been an ongoing discussion for many years.
As vehicle operators and owners it's our responsibility to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition at all times the test does not change that position.
However what may well change is the facilities available to the vehicle owner to have there vehicle serviced or repaired.
If and I say if the large group preditory price the test and the total number of test reduce through increasing the time between tests,a small operator who has relied on MOTs to support the business model will most likely fail.
I complex issue and one that had the potential to reduce consumer choice.
 
Seems to be a confusion regarding the department responsible for the MOT administration.
It's the DVSA ( Driver and Vehicle Service Agency)
Not the DVLA.

It think overall, 2 year MOTs will cost some people more than 1 year ones. The MOT itself is a complete bargain. And it often shows up incipient failures before they get expensive. Some people would never service their cars at all if it wasn't for the MOT.

Used to be a couple of garages in our area famous for that sharp practice, one was a main dealer.
Used to take my cars to MOT test centre that only did Mot's no other work only ever got a failure if it was something I missed.
Now use a friend of my daughters a small garage with just two guys get similar results and if anything needs fixing it's cheap.

It could be a rip off or the second garage being too lax there are sometimes stories on here where people have bought motorhomes with fairly recent MOT s that it seems very unlikely were roadworthy. One idea to reduce the chance of it being a rip off would be to require the garage carrying out the mot to be a different one that used for servicing.

That's the net cost of the fuel refined shipped stored and ready to use including the retail margin not just the oil!
I would prefer if they're going to reduce the tax take to help drivers struggling to pay to totally remove road tax. On a lot of older vehicles even those pretty fuel efficient pay high road tax. Just reducing fuel tax does nothing to discourage using high consumption vehicles
 
Just heard on the radio that the DVLA might be privatised as it's so useless.
Aye they are useless. They were quick enough at taking a direct debit on 1st april for 6 months road tax. I sold the van on the 2nd changed ownership online there and then. V5 out in 4 days but im still waiting on the refund of road tax.
 
No MOT at all here in the Isle of Man! You can (and many do) drive a total wreck. If you import a car more than (I think) 2 years old it has to be thoroughly tested. Many a Rolls-Royce has been failed whilst the local farmer with a rust bucket can have a laugh while driving by.
Yes we have no MOT but look at all the deathtraps on our roads. Vans with no sills left in them. Bald tyres. Lights out. Goodness knows what some brake pipes are like. I would vote for 2 years both here and UK.

My point is that the govt gets more than half the money out of every litre sold, so rather than divert the argument with an unfair windfall tax they should be reducing their own share, an act that is totally within their control.

I totally agree they could reduce their take or reduce other motoring related taxes given the windfall they're getting on the fuel prices

I remember meeting 2 lads at a vw show in the 90's who were from the isle of man. They had an old 1973 type 2 bay . There was no cabfloor in it . Couldn't believe they were driving it like that.

What odd rules we have!. We allow people from our territories to drive on our roads without an MOT! If they were from another country there would be an outcry

But, if an IOM vehicle with no MOT is being driven on UK roads with major faults it would still be dealt with for those offences. Applies to any nationality. Eg, Bald tyres, dangerous, stopped from going any further.

Quite so.
An AA pal is convinced that some people view the breakdown service as an alternative to servicing.
I don't think many people would know that their vehicle was unroadworthy unless a wheel fell off.

You could then argue on the same basis we don't need mot tests either. I think the system some said happened in Spain sounds sensible 2 yearly mot until 10 years old then yearly

MOT tests are a good idea in that at least a vehicle is checked every year. But they never have been a guarantee that the vehicle is safe even an hour after the test. Faults develop and it is always up to the driver to ensure roadworthiness.
The number of drivers who try to explain faults by saying it was only mot’d two months ago is shocking. I personally think every year after 3 yrs is about right.

Driving without an mot isn't the issue. Driving without a floor in a vehicle that had very little front protection in the first place was the issue.
 
When reading posts one could be forgiven in thinking, sometimes a post is in the same style and coming from the same angle as a poster with a different name.
