canal du midi à la chaser Feb 2017

The abattoir section is all locked up and gated, there is a service point with taps and electrics right outside the gate, the 5€ does at least include 2 hours electrics if wanted, there is a tap further down but no handle to turn

we are full of clean and empty of waste anyway, but free dump of waste here at least (y)
That's all new then, it all looked as if it had only just been done , when we were there , there was no service point or gates , you could walk all round the building and that was the only outside water.

Happy Anniversary both of you(y)

Rehydrated chilli mmmmmm delicious!!(y)

cheeky mare, this is posh nosh, a sachet of wet stuff :)(y)

quick update on our location, it appears to be an old abattoir, just got me thinking, is abattoir a French word, we certainly spell it the same, but is public also a French word???

<snip>
Where else would we have got "public" from? OK, OK, I know.. the same place as the French did: from the Romans

Don't quite understand - you don't mean £8 just for the 2 chillis?? We pay around £1.70 each for these. Love all the flavours that Look What We Have Found, very useful to have in store on van.

I must admit I presumed Anthea was accurate on her research :):)

BTW its only a bit of fun, no cash prizes :LOL:

The pink fizz looks like the bargain stuff i got from Auchan during their wine season (April?) and that was about 82p a bottle. (1 euro to £1.35 last year)

Is that the same stuff that I charged you £4 for(y)

Martin

My guess is £10.87. Please note that I am out in the wilds touring Ireland, and there may be a delay of half an hour or so between me posting and my post actually appearing.

Well that Muscador must have been good, in my book £10.88 is closer than £10.50, never known a GTP be judged on 'least intervention', no fun in guessing by these rules. Anyway have a happy holiday.

Where are you headed today? Is there any sign of the abattoir opening?:)

Abattoir totally locked up, can see all the doors marked for showers etc but no access

On our way to Montferrand today, well on our way already

Nice start, mixed cloud with sun, but no heating on last night for the first tome this trip

took the back roads today, passed over the river a couple of times, the level is way down on last night, can't really believe it can be this far inland but think it must be tidal, didn't get any photos but the bit I photographed yesterday (the big canal) must be 20' lower today, but still moving quite fast

Something I need to investigate, (or not) tonight we are on the canal du midi proper, at the highest point which I think is also more or less the start

Just about to take on Toulouse, stopped for some shopping first, Bev doing that while I mend the MH o_O see next post (y)

Our MH has too many 'features' for its own good, often wondered what would happen if one particular one failed, well today it did, actually it had already failed before but same thing today

All of our cupboards in the kitchen have electronically operated solenoids that hold the sliding drawers and top cupboards closed when the engine starts. A simple thing a peg pushes out and locates in a hole in the back of the drawer frame. The 'failed' one has at least failed and allowed it to open, I am reading it sticking shut, the only option would be to force it open, which might be why it is now broken

There is still some slight movement even when locked and I think that may be the real issue, but this solenoid comes loose, one of the screws which only go into chipboard o_O:( has come loose as in the photo, I have now plugged the hole with a matchstick end and all seems a lot tighter

I think the French roundabouts have a lot to do with this failing, plus the little play, then the weight of the dog food in the drawers all work against the little peg thingy doing its job

But we will see how it goes now, at least the drawer wil not be slamming in and out at every roundabout for a while :)(y)

and I also fixed a new one on us, all ready to go this morning, legs up, engine started, can hear a faint whistle type noise, couldn't find it, walking the length of the MH and back it seemed to move from end to end

decided to check outside, found it in the battery locker, which also houses our E + P pump etc, the hand held controller has a red triangle alert on it and is whistling

we also have a remote which doesn't have this symbol or noise, didn't really know what to do, but pressed the leg retract button, the legs made a small noise and movement I guess the alarm went out and the noise stopped

shut locker door back up and then noticed the 'normal' last event by the E + P which is a quick burst on the pump, not sure why but now think I hadn't heard that when I retracted them remotely. But I was sure the legs down orange light was out and I had by now taken the hand brake off which force an auto retract anyway

the only thing different was I had deployed manually as the remote said too uneven, a regular thing for ours which really cant be right, the ground was nearly level, although the front wheels did clear the ground by 3" or so, so not as flat as it looked maybe

Probably something that will not happen again and certainly not if we get it back to Mick at SAP :)(y)

Seeing the ready made chilli reminded me of meeting friends in Portugal a couple of years ago and suggesting we went out for a meal. The wife says "that would be nice seeing as we stayed in last night and I made tea"
Husband replies "you made tea ? We had a pot noodle each, and I boiled the kettle !"

Just checked their web site. It's open April - October to cater for cyclists and backpackers. Not many of those about this time of year I bet!!

Did Montferrand via a supermarket and breakfast stop off, the 'aire' at Montferrand is simply a car park for the canal du midi, there are no services at all, infact when we got there we couldn't even park, 2 other motorhomes and a load of cars. We parked right on the end half in and half out of the car park and had a look round

There is a restaurant at the junction at the junction with the main road only about 200yds away, but just closing after lunch (14:30)

The canal arrangement at Montferrand is quite impressive, I think things have changed over the last 400 years or so, but the main function was to keep enough water in the canal, as this is the highest point on the canal it needs constant top up. A water feed has been run from miles away specifically for this, although it also ran a local mill as well

The water feeds through a 'basin' that I presume at some point was a parking area for boats, but now serves only as a channel for the water

Around the basin are a complete circle of trees, with a pathway avenue through the middle, serves no purpose other than looking nice as far as I can see, but nice I think it is :)(y)

due to the parking issues we then decided to move on
