Just looking
Chatting to a warden recently.

They would love to go to all metered supplies, but its a big investment to do so.
I'd rather know exactly how much I'm paying per night, though. Probably stems from being a single parent years ago, and having to budget to the n'th degree. You never know what the meters are set at, and sometimes they're not the accurate. Up to the site to set the meter rate, so theoretically they can set what they like

Don't know if it's been altered but when we had the site it was not allowed to charge more per unit than cost price if metered.Did leave the option to charge per day for effectively standing for use of our infrastructure then price per kWh...at the time many site owners were not aware of this

At £4 off for leccy there not listening!!
I dunno outside of summer some of the sites this on makes a site for 2 people "reasonable". We will still use CAMC in the shoulder months now this discount works.

It's still not comparible with the CACC silly cheap pitches though, peak season we'll be using the GRASS 40% off code as others mentioned. People really should ditch the EHU cables and go offgrid.

This year I spent a week on a commercial site (early June) and the electric was metered. Basically you loaded a card at reception with whatever amount you wanted and then put in the EHU bollard. A refund was available at the end of the stay if appropriate. My cost was less than £1.00 a night - I loaded £15 on the card and got a refund of approx £13 - was there for 4 nights. I’m happy with this system and would like to see it available on more sites, including the 2 major clubs.

Sounds much the same as the campsite at Braemar. The system works well, and is fair - you just pay for what you use.
Not been to the Braemar campsite for a year, but they used to clearly show the electricity unit rate they were paying so customer knew they weren't being ripped off.

Perhaps they should have a word with their own sites!

The Shingle Hall C&MHC CL site on Romney Marsh, Kent has had individual meters for years.
You get 8kw free per night as with your pitch booking and then 35p per KW thereafter.

Each bollard has a little meter like this, and you simply note the numbers at the beginning and end of your stay and pay the difference (if needed).
They seem to be available fairly widely for about £50, and I'm sure considerably less if you were buying in bulk.

As an aside:
8kw per night seems to be enough to run the lights, the fridge, the TV and even heat up a tank of water.

I think you would only go over that amount if you used the heating/air con, the hot plate, the kettle, and left the water heater on for several hours

Days gone by, yes. But now the price to get metered connections installed, has like all things hugely inflated.

Plus they struggle to get the correctly authorised sparks.

I bet they don't reduce the prices for the non electric pitches by as much as the electric actually costs:cautious:
Call me cynical, but the reason sites don’t want to stop charging for EHU is they make more money. The few times we been metered, it’s been a fraction of the cost….and no, we still used the same set up. Only my view, of course 🤷‍♂️.

1: It is illegal to charge more for electricity than paid to the supplier.
(You can not make a profit from selling electricity unless you are an electrical provider)

2: The C&MHC had a £12m electrical bill in 2023.
They found that when they charged a lower figure for non EHU pitches that the electrical consumption decreased.

3: Due the arrival of EV's:
Caravans are already towed by EV's and withing 5 years they will be the majority. MoHo's will follow.
It means C&MHC will need to fit metered electrical points.

  • Some pitches will use none
  • Some will use about 6 KW per night (Normal Fridge/TV/Cooking use)
  • And some will be heating/cooling their van and charging their car.

It has to made fair, the zero EHU's should not be paying towards the high users.

Talking to a site manager this week he says C&MHC have plans for meters on all sites by the end of next year

I did tell him they could save a fortune , push up the electric included price , but have an option to isolate the pitch for no electrics for a reduced price

But for club site pricing context , I was amazed to pay under £15 for electric hard standing pitch

Benefit of leaving my first wife at home 😁

But highlights the odd pricing policy, a no facility (no toilets or shower block) but they still charge per person 🤔🙄

An Official C&MHC site (I presume it must have been if you were talking to a Club Site Manager) for £15 with hard standing and EHU for a Solo member.
That's got to be a FIRST, where was this? 😄

Illegal or not illegal - There is no way of calculating/monitoring this when the pitch price includes EHU. How do they justify their price in terms of legality when they do not stipulate what proportion of that pitch fee goes towards the electric?

I guessed slightly low, but very good value 👍
Thankyou, I will have to investigate more because, just looking through my 2022 members book, it appears that some WITHOUT toilet/showers, Nunnykirk for example, are reasonably priced.
When did that happen! 😄

Getting better month by month.
Just had a look a setthorns in the new forest for one night.
£18:70 for hard standing no EHU
£27:70 for hard standing with EHU
£9:00 for EHU no difference in pitch really bar the hook up.
No way I would use an EHU pitch for that sort of money. Not even in winter. Smash the batts and recharge on the way home.

I think you may possibly have anti C&MHC blood coursing round your body 😁

I don’t think even this club could add £35 more for an extra person, I suggest your argument is failed 🤔 although I do agree a month on a club site would put a huge hole in the holiday budget

Coincidentally I am looking to stay at Cambridge next week, both of us this time, it’s just under £35 👍

£32 for one person he said must be approximately £15 per person plus pitch so that’s £47 ??

Gave up debating Club pricing with "non-believers" ages ago.
Your money spend as you like or not. Each to their own. (y)

£32 was 1 person for two nights 👍
It is a lovely site David and £16 per night is quite acceptable in my book, as it has no toilet block I do wonder how they justify adding another £6.70 per night for another person I am not surprised you left Bev at home :giggle: maybe not everybody takes their water with them like we do:unsure:

Presumably hand dug for black waste 🤔 I am amazed they are still allowed to do that 🤔

Do you reckon they can cope with you dropping 200 litres 😳
Hopefully but if not it will come home with us, I think they have moved on from hand dug holes and long drops to lifting a manhole covers ;) which to be fair I find a lot easier to drop a hose into that some of the fancy campsite designs especially above ground ones.
