Black Tank Emptying Map

As somebody who has never been educated about Blank Tanks can somebody please explain the various operations of them.

Firstly, I assume the discharge from the toilet to the tank is by gravity, or do some use a pump, or does the macerator form part of this process?

For discharge, can it be by gravity only?

It seems that normally it is by a 4" pipe. Is this if it is by gravity only?

If discharge is after a macerator can a narrower pipe be used, and can a pump be used to discharge into an outlet above the tank?

All basic questions for an uneducated one.

CAN BE GRAVITY OR BY PUMP, CAN BE MACERATED BY THE TOILET OR IF IT IS A PUMP DISCHARGE THEN MACERATED BY THE DISCHARGING PUMP - MINE IS MACERATOR TOILET WITH A GRAVITY DISCHARGE TO WHICH I COULD ALSO ADD A MACERATOR PUMO TO PUMPO IT UPHILL IF I NEEDED TO

If discharge is after a macerator can a narrower pipe be used, and can a pump be used to discharge into an outlet above the tank? YES - YOU COULD USE A HOSE PIPE SIZED PIPE IF YOU ATTACH A MACERATOR PUMP WHEN DISCHARGING

I have a 70 ltre black tank and macerator toilet. Ive been travelling through France, Italy, Slovenia off to Austria tomorrow then on through Germany and on to the Czech Republic. Then home through Germany and Holland late August. We have been away six weeks so far and have not found a single place to empty the black. However my solution is simple and effective. A standard cassette takes seventeen litres and lasts two to three days so at best the black tank lasts twelve days at worst a week. So I simply empty the black tank into a cassette a design that is very easy to empty once a week into the standard above ground system. Usually three cassettes at a time once a week with spare. Works well for us. If I find a place to empty the black I will be happy to let you know for your records.

My RV has black and grey tanks, the toilet flushes into the black tank by gravity, which is vented through the roof. Emptying is by 3" pipe to a ground level, or just above ground level dump point, and has a tank flush system, whereby you connect the water hose to an inlet and flush the tank when emptying. Empty the black tank first, then flush the pipework with the grey water. Simple, no additives or chemicals.
If there is no ground level dump, I attach a macerator to the 3" outlet and connect a 1" pipe to that, and pump away, up to 30' away and up to 5' above ground, and again rinse with the grey water.
Never had any problems emptying UK, or Europe, and lasts around 5-7 days. The fresh water will run out before the tank needs emptying.

Great work (y) Nice to know where such service points are.

That said, with 15 years of owning vans with marine tanks, I never hunted drive over disposal out. it's never worried me how I might dump the waste. Drive over gravity dumps are a bonus, but in the absence of one, just peeling the waste off into another container and then emptying conventionally is very little hassle. I would never choose a site on the basis of such a point.
It really depends what kind of outlet and what kit you have to hand, the black outlet on our moho is fairly low and the tank contains waaaaaay more than any bucket you might fit under there. This map will be extremely useful.
We are blessed with a drain inspection cover on our drive so can dump the tank over it. So much nicer than having to part empty over a bucket!

Would not the Wipes problem be easily solved if our corrupt politicians just banned wipes that don't flush and disintegrate...Same with packaging g.BUSBY.

Thank you ceejayt

The reason for my wanting to get au fait with the system is that a friend has recently bought a new MH with a black tank and he is under the impression that all recent MHs have them. His is a marque I had not heard of but is from the Trigano Group. I wonder if the black tank version is marketed in Eastern Europe.

I shall now be able to discuss more with him and find out how he got on emptying on his recent trip from Poland to Provence.

What is the normal system make-up ex-factory, from all the possibilities you listed of macerators, pumps etc., for European MHs, i.e. excluding American RVs?

'This is not just a toilet thread, this is a 'black tank' toilet thread'

Hopefully I don't upset Jim but, we have black dump options at Five Roads Caravan Park, PH11 8NB, up here in glorious Scotland.

Thank you ceejayt

I think majority of vans are cassette based, macerator toilets and black tanks tend to appear on larger more expensive vehicles.

Court Farm and a couple more added to THE MAP

Don't forget that you can now filter the pins to show only the pins you want rather than all of them.

Grey and black all end up in the same place for treatment
I believe the near future for water waste is for black and and grey to be treated separately.

Behind this is the wish to take pressure off the current infrastructure and to avoid processing that which does not need processing.

It is being taken so seriously I know of a housing development being held up because the old public infrastructure has not yet been upgraded to the twin system - but it is on its way.

Interesting but it can only ever apply to new developments - the cost of installing a whole new set of sewers across the UK to handle. grey only and to build the processing plants - can't see that happening in the near future - not in the remainder of my lifetime at any rate

I've no idea what you ve been looking for but at least 50% of French aires have a drive over grid, probably close on 100% of Stelplatze and many of the Sosta's. Sometimes you do need to have a look which way the pipes are running but generally they both go to the same place. The best practice is to use bio degradable treatments and clean up after yourself, I favour using the pipe as its cleaner and then you can use the grey element to give the gully a good swoosh afterwards.

It strikes me that some of these ground level sites will be free to use while others will/could be only available with a site booking or stellplatz place, unless of course they have a seperate fee for servicing which I know some sites do.

For example the N+B factory and MORELO factory sites both offer ground level dumping for free but you pay for water at N+B, the aires at Ypres and Brugge both have ground level dumping but after the pay gate, I am not suggesting that I am averse to paying for services but if a vacant space on a stellplatz or camp site is a condition of entry then it could be a problem.

I note that on your map ceejayt you state overnight stay required for sites so maybe we should be carefull to indicate which stellplatz and aire require an entry/stay.

Thanks, will add the Morelo and N and B sites. Is that for Morelo and N and B owners only?

My reference to overnight stays relates in the main to CAMC sites whereas C and CC allow a paid for visit. Best assumption for people using the map might be to assume it is not free unless the description says otherwise and they can make their own decision on whether to 'call in' or not.

Great post, as always ceejayt. Your maps are really helpful and must take ages to compile.
