Big van jealousy... or is it

So many people tell me I can’t go anywhere in my big van, I am thinking about ordering a PVC and sticking an A frame on it for days out!
I don't think people are telling you that you can't go to places in your big van ... take 'in my big van' out of your sentence and you might get their true meaning!

We were pitched up at Honfleur and the van on the left came in alongside us. We went out for a walk and, on our return, saw this monster on our right. Makes our 8.4m tag look teeny!

Spotted this in Scotland the other day difficult to say what it was like as all the window shutters were closed.

Nothing special when you see some of the "rigs" this weekend at Malvern..

However, not for me.. To big and to greedy.. BUT someone loves them and lets face it if you have loads and loads of cash you could have one just to use on the odd weekend. (y)
You have to take into account that many of the American Motorhome owners full time so do appreciate the extra room we have a fifth wheel albeit a “small” one but we love the extra space it gives us and we can get onto most pitches bearing in mind some of the latest caravan models are almost as long as we are

Back in 2003 I had just got rid of my large coach built which had been great while the kids were growing up, attended a show with intension of getting another coach built but I spotted the new T5 California. Put my order in and never looked back. Got rid of the silver service and bone china and started slumming it with plastic everything. It was that bad that I replaced my California's with two more California's before being talked into something a bit bigger. ? We replaced it with a PVC but it was always too big, we even had to stop driving under height barriers. Seriously thinking of going back to a pop top again, they are fantastic for so much more than any other camper on the market. Take a look at a California when you next visit a show but beware you could be tempted by it's excellence.....:)(y)

Having had loads of vw campers I can say yes they are great as an everyday car and the odd weekend or week away if you like compact etc.

But luxury living they are not and you certainly couldn't live in one for long there's just not enough storage.
But that's why they are a camper van and not a motor home

Yeah already got the tee shirt for all that stuff, If I want extended trips now I tend to park the van in a hotel car park and tour from there. No hassle, meals cooked for you, you can have a night or two away from the hotel do a bit of touring in the van as we do while in the UK. Then move onto another region hotel with a couple of night stops on the way. A whole different experience to just living the 24-7 isolation of your gin palace ;) ;) I'll be perfectly honest, after years of camp sites etc it all become a bit boring to us so we decided not to give up altogether but try a different form of call it hotel glamping and it suits us really well.(y) Pop tops are perfect for Hotel Glamping.
Any other hotel glampers out there?

I make that distinction also.

As to VWs I drove Caravelle minibuses for many years, whch are a great drive, but I could not imagine living in that space.

I agree about the storage - I would not even want to be without a garage.

You would be surprised nicholsong just how little you really need while away in a motorhome. Ninety percent of what you take you will never even use. What on earth do you keep in your garage. I have driven far and wide in a pop top with just my awning and toilet tent for additional storage. Sorry I don't understand the need.... ;) :)

Horses for courses, we are in our N and B flair. We’ve just 3 weeks on a campsite with our granddaughter on lake Annecy, the girls flew home, I’m now in Greece waiting for SWMBO to arrive. We are able to find a beach, wild camp for upto 14 days without worrying about water, toilet etc, we also have bikes and a scooter and even granddaughter ‘s bike and hover board.
Ok , the ferry to Greece may have been expensive, the 165€ through the Mont Blanc tunnel made me cough, but it works for us.
P.s our on board automatic washing machine is brilliant.

Our choice ✅??????????

I give you that you do tend to carry more crap the more storage you have. I loved my vw campers for their ability to go anywhere and park anywhere and they will always be my go back to vans if I become a house dweller again as I used mine as daily drivers. For what you use it for they are ideal but as I'm living in mine full time I think is struggle going much smaller as I'm too lazy to be making a bed every night and I like my seperare shower and full kitchen .

But I'm done with the bigger ones that's for sure

Garage is not the only reason to have bigger than pop-to. Others are fixed beds, tank capacity, living space when wet and strage capacity, which brings us back to your question as to what we keep in our garage.

We have already dumped items we did not use, such as EHU cable and levelling ramps.

We have left the following:-

Two bicycles which we would not want to put on a rack, for security, dirt, less ease readiness, and anyway my Dawes Galaxy might protrude beyond the width of a VW. The bcycles alone might justify the garage for me.

Then clockwise, spare ratchet straps, Kaercher window vacuum cleaner, 'groundsheet-backed' pic-nic rug. spare cassette, toolbox, additional sets of socket spanners, torx screwdrivers etc. Hose reel. Cabin bags for when we have to fly back to see Basia's Mum(98), bags/boxes with change of seasonal clothes for when we are away over two seasons, boxes for walking boots, plastic can with 10 lts spare water and tap, spare wheel, buckets , box for cleaning materials, bio tablets etc., long-handled broom for washing w/screen.

Plus lots of space for vegetables/fruit for which we have no space inside and keep cooler in garage, plus space for 5x3lts wine when on offer and 24 beers.

All of this has been used. Especially since we wild camp and cannot shop regularly.

It could be argued that there is storage in some pop-top campers for many of these items - but not all surely?

That inventory keeps us going for 2 months. If we were longer we might need to add more.

Your right full time would be a big no no in a pop top but it has its place for us at this time. Car like in every way with the benefit of proper beds. For a few nights here or there. I really like my term of Hotel Glamping for that is what we tend to do these days.

When I met my lovely partner she had never been inside a caravan.she now loves to rough it along with me and our two sets of clothes as long as we have a couple of proper holidays each year.;):)

lovely looking van.
She was a beauty I was lucky enough to get that from the second owners and they had both looked after it really well.
And a very clever well fitted layout

Oh Me Me Me,

Martin
No

I found you just fill it with crap, I carried loads around with me last year I never used. I've carried stuff around this year in a smaller garage I've not used either

Just less thankfully

We have a large garage and it's full. We use every item in it though.

We found that after one long trip it became obvious which things we needed and used and those which we didn't. Since then we've not really changed what we take.

Now parked up, 420 l of water, empty 150l black tank, 8 dozen cans of mythos, to much red wine, plenty of gas and a freezer full of ice. We ain’t moving for a least week , and we may use our washing machine ?????
