Avro energy collapsed

I emailed Octopus last Tuesday as I still haven’t been able to set up an online account.

Yesterday I had a reply saying that they had not received my details from Avro yet.

I am keeping a big chunk of money aside for my first bill. 🤪
Look at Octopus tariffs and use these to work out your bill.

I didn’t get as far as setting up an online account with Avro - the details were supposed to be in a second email which never arrived 🙁

Well they had me down as 2 gas meters but that is now sorted ihave just queried if they have been charging me the 26p per day standing charge for non existant gas meter, and have yet to hear from them 🤗

I've been with with Octopus (electric only) for some time now and as much as you can like any utilities company, I do. Very user friendly easy to give meter readings online. No pressure to have smartmeter either. Yet to win anything on spin the wheel though!

Our daily standing charge with Octopus from April is going to 48.64(from 26.44) and to 27.13(from 20.013) per unit kilowat charge. Shocking increases.

The way they use the standing charge verges on deception. We are told this part is to cover the costs of maintaining the network and other supply activities, so they would have us believe those costs have doubled?
We can try and reduce our useage if possible to keep the bills down, no way to avoid the standing charge though is there.....?

Emails to and from Eon this week
Me to Eon
Looking at the options on your website I notice the Next Flex tariff states “You will receive a discount if you pay by Direct Debit.” It would be helpful to know what the discounted price is in order to make a comparison given the enormous rises customers are facing. I notice that I am still awaiting the transfer of balance from Igloo Energy, why is that taking so long?

Current tariff
12.63 Night rate
24.14 Day rate
24.10 per day standing charge

Thank you for your email.
I have had a quick look at your account and can confirm - the Next Online v11 tariff is for a Direct debit customer only and have the following rates applied:

Next Online v13 fixed for 1 year, paid by a Fixed Direct Debit only and a smart meter to be installed where eligible.

Next 1 year v9 fixed for 1 year, paid by fixed direct debit discount, and a smart meter to be installed where eligible.

Next 1 year v9 fixed for 1 year, paid by receipt of bill, and a smart meter to be installed where eligible.

60.89 pence

The outstanding balance went to money heaven. RIP Igloo. Eventually, I expect Eon will arrange a replacement credit balance but it won't be your actual money. Watch them like a hawk.

The daily standing charge is a scam. The cost of maintaining the network was included in the tariff in the days before standing charges, when the wholesale energy cost was as much as 50% of the domestic tariff. Today the wholesale energy cost is about 33% of the tariff. The margins are getting bigger and bigger. Whose side is Ofgem on?

Just logged on to Avro and all details blank. Luckily I made a note of my credit with them yesterday but that looks a bit dubious!
You can be assured, your credit is safe.
You will have a new Company appointed to have your account by OFGEM.
Whilst the new Company will initially have your account, you do not have to remain with them. You may change to a Company of your choice.

I’ve turned everything off to lower my bill and also purchased remote controlled switches so I can turn everything off remotely.

Between gas, electric and fuel I’m thinking that food will be next, and what next after that…….. fresh air.

That’s exactly what I thought but Martin Lewis on his tv programme last night defended the charge saying it wasn’t the electric companies fault. The standing charge price increase was correct and they were forced into it.

That is down to Ofgem. Whose side are they on?

From what I can gather the rise in standing charge is to cover the cost of bailing out the customers of the failed companies so their balances are safe - even if the companies had spent or otherwise lost the money. So just like the banks - in the good times they take the profits, in the bad times we bail them out.
By adding it on to the electricity standing charge it notionally spreads the pain. It could be argued that this should be a levy on the unit price instead (so heavy users pay more), from additional taxes on the energy companies or from central funds through general taxation. However it is done, someone has to pay and some will gain, some will lose.

Bear in mind I'm not saying the current way of doing it is the right way :)

I'm lucky I have a fixed rate deal until August with Scottish Power, after then we will all feel the same pain. They are talking about an average for duel fuel of £3,000 a year 🥺

AVRO over to Octopus

Electric

standing charge 23.7 p up to 44.5p
unit price 20.12p up to 27.63p

Annual based on admittedly high use of 6291Kwh per annum £1352 up to £1900 (increase of £548)

Gas

standing charge 26.1 up to 27.2
unit price 3.94p up to 7.3p

annual based on admittedly high use of 24,646 Kwh per annum £1065 up to £1892 (increase of £827).

Started using log burner in lounge. The 2 kidults living at home are getting the message albeit slowly. Layer up and ship out asap.

Downsize into a 1 bedroom 25 tog quilt on the cards.

Think I will still have a quick shop around but not expecting anything great. I am the eternal optimist

What's worse is that City AM reported yesterday that the October 2022 price hykes could be a further 75% on top of the Apr-22 changes.

.......so in our case every £1 spent on our current energy bill would turn into £2.7125 in Oct-22.

That's 1 x 1.55 (Apr increase) x 1.75 (Oct increase).

Maybe it is time to consider opening up a few coal mines again.
Assuming that is feasible.

I’m beginning to think
is it time to have solar roof panels
thing is my roof is north facing
and unlkly to catch much sun:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
We weighed up the cost of installing solar a couple of years ago.
We have a good area of roof facing ssw, but we would not cover the installation costs in our lifetime.
Maybe in view of present energy costs, this may have changed.
